WAYNESBURG – Corner Cupboard Food Bank and Consol Energy will hold a food drive Thursday in front of the Greene County Courthouse to help provide food to families in need this holiday season.
“During the holidays, we experience an increase in clientele and donations are greatly appreciated,” food bank director Candace Tustin said.
She said that during the holidays, people often have additional family members to feed and higher gas bills to pay.
“A lot of our elderly clients have to decide if they’ll pay for their medication or food for the week,” she said. “Top that with trying to pay for an increase on their heating bill and there’s definitely a need in our county.”
Tustin said Consol Energy will be providing money and manpower for the food drive, which will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“It’s really a privilege for us to be able to give back to those in need during the holiday season,” Consol Energy spokesman Brian Aiello wrote in an email. “We’ve shared a very special relationship with Greene County and the Corner Cupboard Food Bank through the years. Many of our employees and their families have lived and worked in Greene County for generations.”
Tustin said the food bank will also be accepting donations throughout the weekend, during Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful’s Christmas Open House from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and during the Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Parade at 2 p.m. Saturday and “Christmas in the Burg” from 5 to 8 p.m. later that day.
The donated food items should be nonperishable, Tustin said.
