Roa’s hit helps Wild Things’ Foss win 9th

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich – Hector Roa hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the top of the eighth inning and Trevor Foss got his Frontier League-leading ninth win as the Wild Things defeated the Traverse City Beach Bums 3-1 Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Wuerfel Park.

Roa’s hit came with two outs and scored Justin Bohn and James Harris, two runners who reach on errors by the Beach Bums. A walk to Bralin Jackson loaded the bases for Roa, who was 2-for-4 and scored Washington’s first run.

Foss (9-4) gave up only four hits and one run over eight innings. He struck out four. Zach Streker retired all three batters he faced in the ninth inning for his 15th save.

Washington forged a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Roa singled and scored on a two-out hit by Kenny Peoples-Walls. Traverse City tied the score in the third inning when Josh Hauser led off with a single and scored on a triple by Jeff DeBlieux. One batter later, DeBlieux was thrown out trying to score on a ground ball to Bohn at second base.

DeBlieux’s triple was Traverse City’s final hit as Foss retired 16 of the last 17 batters he faced.

Losing pitcher Kramer Champlin (6-5) gave up three runs (one earned) and six hits in 7 2/3 innings.
