A Washington man faces several charges including driving under the influence of alcohol after he allegedly got behind the wheel of the wrong car parked in a Jefferson Avenue lot late Wednesday and drove off in it.

Steven Gray, 55, of East Hallam Avenue, was found a short time later near the intersection of Allison and East Wylie avenues. He was taken into custody by Washington police and placed in Washington County Jail on a bench warrant for failure to pay fines on a drunken driving conviction stemming from charges filed two years ago by police in Lewistown, Mifflin County.

City police were called about 11:15 p.m. to a parking lot at 501 Jefferson Ave. Craig Wilson of 937 Leets Ave., Monessen, told police he had parked a 2001 Toyota Camry outside a convenience store and went inside. When he came out, the car was gone. He told police the car was unlocked, and the keys were inside.

After police broadcast a description of the car, an officer responding to the scene spotted it and pulled it over. Gray reportedly told police that he realized he was driving the wrong car as he drove away from the parking lot. His car was found parked in the lot next to where the Toyota had been parked, police said. The Toyota was returned to Wilson.
