Digital Access

Can I access observer-reporter.com without a subscription?

If you are not a print or digital subscriber, you will have access to 10 articles over a 30 day period. You do not need to be a subscriber to view our Obituaries, Blogs, Breaking News, and any section fronts. Also, any stories that are accessed through a post on Facebook and Twittercan be read without a subscription.

I'm already a print subscriber. Do I have to pay to read articles online?

No. If you are already a print subscriber, you get digital access for free. Simply activate your digital access by clicking here.

What if I just want digital access without a print subscription?

For just $1, you can get a 24-hour Digital Day Pass, or sign-up for monthly access. Digital access includes unlimited use of our full website, the e-Edition, and our e-Edition apps.

Can I sign in using my Facebook account?

At this time, no- but we're working on it!

What if I forget my password or need to change other registration information?

You can manage your account using our Self Service Center. Still need help? Call our Customer Service Team at 724-222-2201 or email customerservice@observer-reporter.com.

How do I log in?

On our homepage, you can click the "Log In" button on the top-left of your screen, or you can log in using the paywall prompt box when it appears on the page.

I gave you my name, email address and street address when I registered. Will you sell your subscriber list?

We do not sell the email addresses, names, street addresses or interests information about the users of our services. We will periodically send you relevant messages regarding products and services offered by the Observer Publishing Company and our promotional partners. Your identity will not be revealed to the marketer unless you respond directly to the marketer's offer and provide your information.

How do I search?

Just type the words you want to search for in the text box on our homepage, or click the magnifying glass button on our article pages at the top of the screen.

Is searching the site free?

While searching is free, most results, except those obtained from a search of the Observer-Reporter Archive, are free to active subscribers. Non-subscribers will be limited to viewing content via our metered paywall.

How do I search for obituaries?

Obituaries are searchable on the Obituaries page. You can click here for an advanced search. For obituaries older than March 2014, use our regular search on our homepage.

What can I search?

Searches show results of all content on www.observer-reporter.com. Any article with an age of greater than 30 days will be located in our paid archive.

Do I have to pay to access articles in the archive?

Anyone may search the archive free, but there may be a fee to retrieve the full text of articles. All subscribers have free access to articles published within the past 30 days.

If I search the Archive, what are the charges?

Searching is free and unlimited, however there is a small fee for complete articles retrieved from our archive. The results list for your search will display the headline, the publication date, and the estimated word count for the complete article. To view the complete article, you must click on the headline in the results list. You will be asked to register as a new user or sign-in as an existing user. Payment is by credit card.
The Archive has a variety of pricing options for purchasing articles. To allow for flexibility, we offer a day pass and a week pass, along with single article purchasing. You will be asked for your credit card information as part of the set up process. When you are ready to purchase, you can choose from the following options:
  • Single article purchase: You can choose to purchase one article at a time for $2.95 per article. Each purchase is reflected as a single purchase on your credit card.
  • 3 Pack: $6.95, one week duration
  • 10 Pack: $21.95, one month duration
  • 25 Pack: $49.95, one month duration
  • 40 Pack: $79.95, one month duration
  • 500 Pack: $995, one year duration
  • 1,000 Pack: $1,995, one year duration

I'm having trouble with my Archive search or purchase. What do I do?

Check the Archive Help and Frequently Asked Questions to find answers to your questions now. If you continue to have any technical difficulties, either with your username and password or with the payment options, please contact NewsBank at 1-800-896-5587 or by e-mail at observer-reporter@newsbank.com. NewsBank will respond within one business day; longer on weekends and holidays.

What's available in the Archive?

The Archive contains the text of articles published in the Observer-Reporter from January 1, 1989 forward.

Where can I find stories printed before 1989?

The print editions of the Observer-Reporter are available on microfilm back to 1808. To find microfilm records, please visit the library in person or phone the library for assistance. We're sorry, but the Observer-Reporter is not able to assist in microfilm searches.

How can I subscribe to the Observer-Reporter?

We offer subscription options to fit the needs of all readers. To choose the option that best suits your needs, visit our Subscription page. If you have additional questions, please call our customer service department at 724-222-2201, or email customerservice@observer-reporter.com.

Where is my paper today? Why is it late? Why hasn't it been delivered?

While we strive to get each and every newspaper we deliver to our subscribers' homes on time and in perfect condition, late or missed deliveries occasionally happen due to such factors as late-breaking news, press malfunctions of adverse weather conditions.

Who can I call when my paper is late or never arrived?

To report a service issue, please call 724-222-2201 or email customerservice@observer-reporter.com.
Our Customer Service department is open for phone calls:
    Monday, Wednesday and Friday: 7am - 5pm
    Tuesday and Thursday: 7am - 6pm
    Saturday 7am – 11am
Walk-in customers are welcome Monday through Friday from 8:30am - 5pm.
You can also report a delivery issue by submitting a Delivery Problem.

I'm going on vacation. How can I temporarily hold delivery of the paper?

To temporarily suspend your home delivery service, please submit a Temporary Delivery Stop form. You can also call customer service at 724-222-2201, or email customerservice@observer-reporter.com.

I need to make a payment on my subscription- how can I do that?

With our Self-Service Center, you can make a payment when it's most convenient for you. Payment is by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover). ALL credit-card transactions and registrations on www.observer-reporter.com are done on our secure server. The safety of your information is very important to us. You may also call us with any billing issues at 724-222-2201.

When I purchase a digital subscription, when will I get access?

If you make your purchase through observer-reporter.com or by phone, you will gain access immediately. For mail-in orders, you should receive access within 7 business days.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

You may cancel your subscription at any time. Digital only subscriptions will stop at the end of the paid subscription term. Print subscriptions will be cancelled within 2-3 business days, and a refund will be issued 2-3 weeks from cancellation.

How do I change my credit card information?

Log in to the Self-Service Center to make changes to your account. You may also call us with any billing issues at 724-222-2201.

Can I still get a digital subscription if I live elsewhere part of the year?

Of course! Choosing a digital subscription is ideal for keeping up-to-date on your community while you are away.


e-Edition

What is the difference between web content and the E-Edition?

Our website contains web content such as up-to-the-minute news, blogs and more. The e-Edition is a digital replica of the printed paper. On your computer, tablet or smartphone, the e-Edition looks identical to that day's newspaper.

Can I use the e-Edition without registering?

No. The e-Edition is a premium product available by subscription only. You must register to use this product.

Why do I have to pay for the e-Edition and web content?

The Observer-Reporter charges for unlimited digital access so we can continue to invest in the quality journalism you know and love.

Can I get access on my mobile phone or tablet? What devices are supported?

We are constantly striving to bring you the best experience on any device you own. Much of our site is now optimized for mobile use, and we are working toward a fully-responsive, mobile-friendly site. To access the e-Edition, log-in to your account on your computer, or download our iPad and Android apps for an optimized view on mobile phones and tablets.

Once I download the app, do I get to view the e-Edition for free?

No, you'll need to have a digital account to view the e-edition. Subscribers must first log in using their current O-R login information and can then begin downloading the latest issue of the Observer-Reporter.

Can I purchase unlimited digital access, but not the e-Edition (or vice-versa)?

At this time, all of our subscriptions include full digital access.

Where can I email a letter to the editor?

Send your letters, without attachments, to orletters@observer-reporter.com. Letters must have the writer's complete first and last name, address and phone number for verification. Letters are subject to editing for length, clarity and taste.

How do I place information about a wedding, anniversary, engagement, military, college, or other celebration?

How do I purchase additional copies of the O-R?

If you would like extra copies of the Observer-Reporter with your announcement, please fill out this form completely and be sure to include your telephone number. Copies may be picked up at the Customer Service Department at 122 S. Main St. in Washington or they may be mailed to you directly. Copies that are mailed must be prepaid. If your item is published in the Observer-Reporter Monday through Saturday then include $2.20 for each copy you request. If your item is published in the Sunday edition then include $4.00 for each copy. If you have any questions, please call Customer Service at (724) 222-2201. We will be glad to answer your questions.


Obituaries

Are all obituaries printed in the Observer-Reporter?

Obituaries are paid advertisements placed by funeral homes at the request of the family. Not all families elect to place obituaries.

Where are obituaries available online?

Obituaries published in the Observer-Reporter are free to view. Please visit the Obituaries page on observer-reporter.com. Obituaries placed before March 2014 to January 1, 1989 can be viewed in our online Archive for a fee. Obituaries before then are available on microfilm, but you must know the approximate date of death to find them.

What can you tell me about Guest Books on the observer-reporter.com obituary pages?

The Guest Book is added free of charge to each obituary. Online Guest Books allow friends and family to express condolences and share memories. Entries are free and are posted after being reviewed for appropriate content. Guest Books are attached to most online obituaries for 30 days. Anyone can sponsor a Guest Book; sponsored Guest Books remain online permanently or for one year.

How do I fix an error in a Guest Book entry?

Why does the observer-reporter.com obituary page say "Powered by Legacy.com"?

Like more than 175 other leading newspapers in the United States, the Observer-Reporter has contracted with Legacy.com to provide online obituaries. The relationship with Legacy.com allows us to add features such as Guest Books, convenient searching for past obituaries, obituaries for celebrities, and searching for obituaries carried in other newspapers. Please note that all information provided to Legacy.com in connection with obituaries and other services is held in confidence; it will not be given to third parties.

Purchasing Papers, Pages & Photos

How can I buy a back issue of the Observer-Reporter?

We have limited copies of newspapers from the past 12 months available for purchase, but cannot always guarantee their availability or if we have both Washington and Greene zoned editions.
These papers are available by calling customer service at 724-222-2201 and prepaying to have the copies mailed to you, or you can stop in at 122 S. Main Street, Washington, PA 15301 and pick them up.
If you're unsure of what date you need, we have the last 3 months available in Customer Service in our front office to browse through before purchasing a copy.
Anything older than 3 months and up to a year old will require providing a date for us to obtain for you.
The Observer-Reporter is also available on microfilm and CD at Citizens Library, 55 S. College St., Washington, PA 15301

How can I purchase photos?

Photos taken by the Observer-Reporter staff are available via our online photo store. When viewing a photo on an article or in a photo gallery, you can click the "Order a Print" link. This will take you to our third-party service, MyCapture, which will facilitate your purchase. For more information on using MyCapture, visit the photo Frequently Asked Questions page.

How do I purchase a photo on your site that doesn't have a "Order a print" link?

Some photos on our site are copyrighted or we do not have the rights to sell the photo. To find out if a photo is available, please email newsroom@observer-reporter.com, or call 724-222-2200.
