Chapter 156 of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, Canonsburg, recently announced recipients of its 2009 scholarships. Each student receives a four-year award.

n Patricia Bellan, a graduate of Peters Township High School, is a student at Dayton University. She is a daughter of Keith and Denise Bellan of Venetia.

n Nicholas Stamatakis, a graduate of Montour High School, is a student at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a son of Paul and Helen Stamatakis of McKees Rocks.

n George Zanic, a graduate of Upper St. Clair High School, is a student at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He is a son of Evan and Dorothy Zanic of Pittsburgh.

Renee M. Lani, a senior at Canon-McMillan High School, was named a Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Her parents are Bruce and Grace Lani of North Strabane Township, and she plans to major in chemical engineer with an environmental minor in college.

Annie E. Preaux, a senior at Canon-McMillan High School, was named a Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Her parents are Robert and Frances Preaux of Cecil Township, and she plans to major in anthropology in college.

Five seniors from Peters Township High School have been named semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship program. Benjamin Gauthier, Evan Komoroski, Claire LaRosa, Benjamin Pritz and John Wawrose will compete for nearly 8,200 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $36 million. In addition, Andrea Briggs, John Flaherty, Lindsey Golden, Melissa Jarrett, Taylor Maher, Joshua Schake and Benjamin West were named Commended Students by the National Merit Corp.

Ringgold High School recently inducted 68 juniors and three seniors into its National Honor Society. Samantha R. Ritzer, a senior at Bentworth High School, has been named a Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship program. A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corp., which conducts the program, will be presented to Ritzer. Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Ritzer's parents are Ed and Linda Ritzer of Scenery Hill.

The Trinity High School marching band won first place in Class AAA with a season-opening score of 78.38 Sept. 26 at the Elizabeth-Forward High School Band Competition. The band also won high music, high visual and high general effect. The band will compete Saturday at the West Allegheny High School Band Competition. Michael Roberts and Stoyan Watsula, students at Bentworth High School, earned Advanced Placement Scholar Awards for the 2008-09 school year in recognition for their exceptional achievement on the AP exams. The College Board's AP program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take college-level courses while still in high school and earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP exams.
