Peters Township Middle School's Bits of Lit student literary magazine received a "First Place with Special Merit" from the American Scholastic Press, an award above first-place honorees for publications with "special and outstanding design and content." Bits of Lit is an annual collection of student art, essays and poetry. The publication is supervised by teachers Renee Brown and Carla McCue and created each year from work done by seventh- and eigth-graders. Seventeen student editors were responsible for choosing the work, typing, editing, formatting and organizing the literature and art work. In the 2008-09 issue, more than 200 works of art and literature were included in the publication.

Twenty-two students at Canon-McMillan High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their achievement on AP exams. The program allows students to earn college credits.

Mary Beth Galanko qualified for the National AP Scholar Award and the AP Scholar with Distinction Award. Other AP Scholar with Distinction Award qualifiers were Kelsey Eckert, Christine Gorman, Andrew Klemash, Emily McCarthy, Chelsey McCartney, Michael Nackoul, Hannah Quinlan and Grant Strimel. Qualifying for the AP Scholar with Honor Award were Ian Aquilino, Renee Lani, Frederick Lombardo and Christina McDonald. AP Scholar Award qualifiers were Ronald Barus, Benjamin Johnson, Timothy Joseph, Levi Levato, Giancarlo Migliuolo, Annie Preaux, Jaret Romano, Elyse Ward and Zachary Zuzek.

Six musicians from Peters Township High School have been selected by audition to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 1 Band. They include Joe Grippi, clarinet; Eric Spangenberg, bass clarinet; John MacKay, euphonium; HB Hull, alto saxophone; Laura Bertoni, alto saxophone; and Michael Counihan, trombone. The band will perform Feb. 12 at Bethel Park High School.

Grace Dahl and Thomas Vissman, fifth-graders at Cecil Intermediate School, were among winners of the 13th annual attorney general's 2010 Drug-Free Calendar Contest. Each year, fifth-graders are encouraged to create an original work of art illustrating a drug-free message of their choice. Dahl's artwork will be featured in February and Vissman's in October. The winners were chosen based on creativity and ability to illustrate and convey a drug-free message. Each winner received a certificate of achievement and a $200 U.S. Savings Bond.

Published 12/6/2009 Alexander Lee was named a semifinalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in the 2010 annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists scored in the top one percent of about 1.5 million juniors who took the PSAT in fall 2008. Alex graduated from Trinity High School in June 2009 after his junior year. He is concentrating on violin studies in preparation for conservatory auditions. Kevin and Alice Lee of Washington are his parents.

Matthew Girouard, a freshman at Peters Township High School, was honored by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth for his first-place mathematics score in Pennsylvania. Girouard's performance on the SAT last spring earned him the honor, along with three other students across the state.
