Newbery Medal winner Avi wrote The Fighting Ground twenty-five years ago. The book was the recipient of the 1985 Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. Now rewritten in serial form and fully illustrated, your students can experience this compelling story that takes place during the American Revolution.
Thirteen-year-old Jonathan, head full of dreams of glory, runs away from home and joins the local militia to fight the dreaded mercenary troops, the Hessians, near Trenton, NJ. Over a twenty-four hour period, through the fog of war, he experiences a soldier's reality with all its horrors, ambiguities, and unforeseen complexities.

It's time for young people to understand the complicated process of electing a leader.

Throughout the section there are many learning activities that link to the newspaper. There is also a unique learning opportunity with step-by-step instructions for holding a classroom election so that students can "act out" the whole process to help them truly understand how elections work.
