Varacallo pours in 18 points to pace W&J men

Albert Varacallo scored a game-high 18 points and helped Washington & Jefferson fight off a furious second-half rally by Thomas More as the Presidents held on for a 70-65 victory in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game Wednesday at Henry Memorial Center.

The Presidents (6-4, 10-12) led 27-17 at halftime and forged a 21-point lead with 13:30 left. Thomas More (5-7, 9-14) used its full-court pressure defense to force 20 W&J turnovers, which helped the Saints pull to within three points on several occasions late in the game, the last time being 68-65 with four seconds left.

Matt Drakeley then secured the win for W&J by making two free throws. The Presidents were 30-for-40 at the free-throw line.

Wahab Owolabi scored 10 points for W&J. Mark Tinklenberg had 17 for Thomas More.

Geneva 95, Waynesburg 62: Bryan Hill scored 23 points and made seven three-pointers to power Geneva to a 95-62 victory over visiting Waynesburg in a non-conference game.

Hill led four players in double figures for Geneva (19-3), which held a whopping 57-23 edge in rebounds. Geneva had more offensive rebounds (26) than Waynesburg had total rebounds (23).

Justin Nardi scored 17 points for Geneva, Greg McDivitt had 11 and Rob Whitt 10. The Golden Tornadoes used 17 players and 13 scored at least two points.

Tim Drakeley was the only players to score in double figures for Waynesburg (8-14). He had 11 points.

Women's result

Geneva 60, Waynesburg 41: Allyson Clarke scored a game-high 16 points as Geneva extended Waynesburg's school-record losing streak by defeating the visiting Yellow Jackets, 60-41, in a non-conference game.

Geneva (19-3) received 13 points each from Megan Hartwig and Rachel Barry.

Waynesburg (1-21), which has lost 21 in a row, couldn't overcome 22 turnovers. Marquis Demniak scored 12 points and made four of the Jackets' six three-pointers. Elisha Jones also scored 12 points.
