Waynesburg opened its season with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Section 4-AAA rival and defending WPIAL champion Belle Vernon in nine innings.
Emily Bosworth hit a key solo home run for the Raiders (1-0, 1-0), who got a six-hitter from Lauren Minor. She struck out 12 and walked two.
Breanna Morris added a triple, double and two RBI.
Ashley Nichols struck out nine in the loss for the Leopards (0-1, 0-2).
n Carmichaels scored seven runs in the fifth inning to snap a 4-4 tie and earn an 11-4 victory over West Greene in Section 2-A in the season opener for both schools.
Alyssa Workman and Taylor Nichols each had two RBI and Morgan Pratt had two hits for the Mikes. Kacey Osbourne earned the win.
Maggie Fike, Mary Burns and Samantha Milliken each doubled and Chelsey Jones had three hits for the Pioneers. Milliken also hit a mammoth two-run home run in the fifth inning. Rachel Burns suffered the loss.
n Burgettstown began its season by needing just five innings to defeat Charleroi, 12-2, in Section 2-AA.
Chelsea Rommes, Rikki Jo Rivay and Jordan Charlier each had two hits for the Blue Devils. Rivay had a double and two RBI and Charlier doubled with four RBI. Chloe Rommes struck out six to earn the win.
Jen Samoda tripled for the Cougars (0-1, 1-1). Jenna Rakosky took the loss.
n Allison Kleinhans was the winning pitcher and also excelled at the plate as McGuffey opened its season by defeating West Mifflin, 13-7, in Section 4-AAA.
Kleinhans struck out seven and went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two triples and four RBI. Marissa Pattison, Courtney Hildebrand and Sam Coffield each doubled for the Highlanders.
Coffield had three hits and three RBI and Emily Renz drove in two runs with three hits.
Sammy Sohro, Amanda Verhula and Danielle Isaacs doubled for the Titans, who played their first game.
n No hits were involved in any of the three scoring plays as Frazier defeated Jefferson-Morgan, 2-1, in Section 1-A.
The Commodores (2-0, 1-0) scored an unearned run in the third inning after an errant throw on a stolen base, then scored the winning run in the fourth. Taylor Lux led off with a walk, was moved to third and scored on a squeeze play.
Marissa Cameron walked, stole two bases and scored on an error for the Rockets (0-1, 0-1).
Angie Kirchner struck out 12 for Frazier. Emily Cottle had eight strikeouts for Jefferson-Morgan.
n Brynne Bashioum struck out 16 and also drove in four runs as Bentworth opened its season with an 8-0 victory over Mapletown in a non-section game.
Bashum had two hits as did Nicole Hudak, who doubled and had two RBI. Emily Dehosse also doubled for the Bearcats.
Miranda Shipley was the losing pitcher for the Maples (0-1).
Baseball
Ringgold used 11 singles, along with some strong pitching by Adam Madar, to defeat Monessen in a non-section game, 11-1, in five innings.
Tyler Patch, Scott Veres and Tom Sherred each had two hits for Ringgold (2-1).
Madar struck out eight and walked two in the complete-game victory.
n Five different pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts for Carmichaels in a 2-0 season-opening victory at Connellsville.
Joby Lapkowicz and Chuck Gasti each struck out five in just two innings. Gasti doubled twice and scored both runs, one off an RBI-double by Lapkowicz, the winning pitcher.
n Bentworth opened its season with a five-run first inning en route to a 15-5 non-section victory in five innings over visiting Charleroi.
Taylor Young was the winning pitcher, while Isiah Manfredi and Dalton Bercosky each doubled for the Bearcats (1-0). Brady Kovalchuk doubled for the Cougars (1-1).
n David Montibeller went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two steals as Jefferson-Morgan notched a season-opening 7-1 win at Avella.
Winning pitcher Terry Lawrence and Mike Mox combined one a five-hitter. Mox also scored three times and stole two bases. Noah Pust belted a two-run double.
Chris Khouri struck out eight in five innings for the Eagles.
College softball
Hannah Schulz had six hits and drove in five runs as Washington & Jefferson swept a doubleheader from La Roche, 15-0 and 14-4, at Brooks Park.
W&J (9-3) scored eight runs in the second and seven runs in the fourth inning of game one. Schulz had three hits and two RBI and Valerie Schultz, a McGuffey graduate, had three hits and four RBI. Carmichaels graduate Melissa Metcalf also had three hits and two RBI.
In game two, W&J trailed 3-0 before scoring 14 of the next 15 runs. Trinity graduate Katelynn Falleroni had a two-run double and finished 4-for-4 with three RBI. Schulz had three hits and three RBI in game two.
