JAMES O. HORN

WWII Army veteran was retired miner

James O. Horn, 85, formerly of Marianna, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, in Haney's Personal Care Home, Rices Landing.

He was born February 21, 1923, in Clarksville, a son of Olon O. and Rena B. Grable Horn.

He attended Greene County Elementary School and was a member of the U.S. Army, where he served during World War II, earning the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze stars and bronze arrowhead and a World War II Victory Ribbon.

He was a life member of American Legion Post 744 and worked in Marianna Mine 58 from 1951 until his retirement in 1985.

In 1980, he married Lucy Mae King, who died May 30, 1993.

He was the last of his immediate family.

Surviving are his caregivers of many years, the Robison family; and two stepsons, Lloyd L. and John N. King, both of Washington.

Deceased, in addition to his wife, are two sisters, Dorothy K. Whitfield and Mable A. Horn; and a brother, Duane Shidler Horn.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Nichol Funeral Home, 1873 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, with the Rev. Linda Mankey officiating. Interment will follow in Independence Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 744.

MARGARET HUBBARD

Member of First United Methodist Church, Houston

Margaret (Peg) Hubbard, 92, of Strabane Trails Village, Washington, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington.

She was born August 14, 1915, in Carlisle, W.Va., a daughter of John Henry and Laura Mills Rowley.

Mrs. Hubbard lived in Houston most of her life and had previously lived in Washington and West Virginia.

She was a 1935 graduate of Canonsburg High School and had attended Houston Elementary School.

Mrs. Hubbard was employed for many years at the former Kmart in Washington and also had worked at the former Mountford Drug Store in Houston.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Houston, Chartiers Senior Citizens, Golden Agers of Meadow Lands and AARP.

On December 12, 1936, she married Robert W. Hubbard, who died January 4, 1985.

Surviving are a sister, Gwen Surman of Sandy Spring, Md.; and three nephews, George Raymond Surman of Potomac, Md., Howard M. Hubbard Jr. of Canonsburg and William Hubbard of California.

Deceased is a brother, Robert Harvey Rowley.

Dorothy L. Loughman, 84, of Peters Township, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008.

She was the wife of the late William A. Loughman; loving mother of William A. Loughman Jr., Donna J. Miller and Gary R. (Valerie) Loughman; cherished grandmother of Danielle Miller, Devin (Rob) Stabryla, Danny Miller and Heather and Garrett Loughman; and proud great-grandmother of Tori Stabryla.

Member of Transfiguration Catholic Church

Mary L. Margoni, 79, of New Eagle, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in Mon Valley Hospital.

She was born October 28, 1928, in Clairton, a daughter of John and Stella Kostoski Yustince.

A homemaker, Mrs. Margoni loved spending time with her family.

She was an active member of Transfiguration Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir.

Mrs. Margoni enjoyed playing cards, playing bingo and doing puzzles with her friends.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Susan Margoni of Washington and Gary Margoni of Monongahela; a brother, John Yustince of West Elizabeth; two sisters, Frances Kelly of Floreffe and Anne Hoge of West Mifflin; a granddaughter, Alyson and husband John Killian; her father-in-law, Aldo Margoni of Donora; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her husband, Ricardo E. Margoni, who died in August 1994; and three sisters, Pearl Perch, Helen Guthrie and Stella Cevetan.

Korean War vet retired

from Ionics Corp.

Robert E. Mitchell, 78, of Bridgeville, formerly of Upper St. Clair Township, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008.

He was the beloved husband of Verna; father of Eric; grandfather of Claire, Robert, John and William; and brother of William and the late John Mitchell and Alvin Burnworth.

Mr. Mitchell retired from Ionics Corp., was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church and a veteran of the Korean War.

He was a graduate of Girard College Class of 1948 and Robert Morris College.

Zoe Grace Pounds, 92, of Midway, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in her home.

She was born May 30, 1915, in Midway, a daughter of James and Elizabeth Sherman Campbell.

Mrs. Pounds was a homemaker.

Surviving are her son, William Pounds of Midway; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Rebecca Kargle of Primrose and Jean Tucker of Midway.

Deceased are her husband, William E. Pounds, who died in 1983; four sisters, Leah Campbell, Erma Bell, Elizabeth Davis and Stella Sawhill; and six brothers, Thomas, Ralph, Richard, Owen, Jim and Clark Campbell.

Canonsburg resident loved gardening and the outdoors

Sharon Lynne "Punkin" Prescott, 51, of Canonsburg, formerly of Wilkinsburg, died at 7:04 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, in her home, following a lengthy illness.

She was born December 18, 1956, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Benjamin H. Prescott of Pittsburgh and Edell Goins Johnson of Canonsburg.

Miss Prescott worked as a carpenter for National Engineering Co. until her retirement. She was the first black woman to become a member of the Carpenter's Union Local 2274, where she was a member since 1979.

She studied with Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Miss Prescott graduated from Wilkinsburg High School and later attended Atlanta Art Institute. She loved the outdoors, fishing, plants and gardening and was an avid Steelers fan.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her stepfather, Ernest M. Johnson of Canonsburg; a son, Devin L. Gibson of Pittsburgh; two brothers, Benjamin (Reana) Prescott of Washington and Tehran Allen Prescott of Pittsburgh; two uncles, Ernest Prescott of Michigan and George (Beverly) Johnson of Westland; four aunts, Rosetta Hawkins of Canonsburg and Kathleen Goins, Louise Thompson and Violet Prescott, all of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Dealo J. Gibson and Jaron Scott of Pittsburgh; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are three aunts, Laura Ripley, Aldonia Ball and Anna Mae Barlow; an uncle, Edward Jackson; and a nephew, Marcus J. Prescott.

KATHERINE M. PUTT

McDonald homemaker raised many foster children

Katherine M. (Kate) Putt, 90, of McDonald, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in her home.

She was born December 12, 1917, in Cecil Township, a daughter of Fred and Mary DeWald Cook.

Mrs. Putt was a homemaker, and although she and her husband never had any children, she raised 23 foster children in her home.

She enjoyed growing flowers, especially beautiful roses. She loved animals and traveling. One of her favorite trips was going to see Daniel O'Donnell sing and perform.

On December 7, 1948, she married Floyd Putt, who died February 16, 1990.

Surviving are four sisters, Dorothy Krehnovi, Viola M. Chwala and Jeanie (Lou) Libert, all of McDonald, and Patricia L. Murgel (Ted) Redhair of Marshfield, Mo.; a brother, Donald A. (Betty) Cook of McDonald; three daughters, Dottie Cook of McDonald, Sally Dendy of Michigan and Wilma McMillan of Tionesta; 20 other foster children; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are four brothers, Henry, Fred Jr., Richard and Robert Cook.

DAVID L. ROTTA

Vietnam War vet owned Advance TV

David L. Rotta, 60, of Monongahela, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 25, 2008, in Mon Valley Hospital.

He was born December 15, 1947, in Monongahela, a son of the late Albert V. and Helen Michalec Rotta.

He had owned Advance TV in Fallowfield Township until his retirement in 2004. After graduating from Monongahela High School in 1965, he went on to serve for three years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Germany.

Mr. Rotta enjoyed bowling and playing golf and was a member of Finleyville Moose Lodge 172 and Elizabeth Moose Lodge 142 American Legion.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Arlene Lauderbach Rotta; a son, David M. Rotta of Monongahela; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Jimmie Coulter of New Eagle and Natalie and James Costa of Donora; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Joann Rotta of Ohio; a sister-in-law, Dianna Rotta of Monongahela; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a brother, Albert G. Rotta, who died May 11, 2005.

WILLIAM VANTASSEL

Marine Corps veteran enjoyed traveling

William (Bill) VanTassel, 81, of Carlsbad, Calif., died Thursday, March 20, 2008, in his home, following a lengthy illness.

He was born February 28, 1927, in Lawrence, a son of William and Julia Kamp VanTassel.

Mr. VanTassel graduated in 1977 from National University with a bachelor of arts degree in business.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 24 years, serving in Korea, Vietnam and various parts of the world. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, he and his family made their home in Carlsbad.

He enjoyed woodworking and attending the athletic events of his 15 grandchildren. He and his wife also enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, Asia, South America and all over the United States.

Mr. VanTassel was a founding member of Order of Alhambra in Carlsbad and Knights of Columbus. He was a helpful, caring, selfless man who cared for the well-being of his family and others, particularly for disabled children.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Haney VanTassel; sisters, Betty Patnesky and Pat Barnes, both of Lawrence; a son; six daughters; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, George.

A Mass was celebrated in St. Patrick's Church in Carlsbad. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Mr. VanTassel's favorite charity that works to help disabled children, Order of Alhambra, 4200 Leeds Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229.
