Alyson Johnson homered, tripled and drove in two runs and freshman Breanna Morris added a two-run home run as Waynesburg whipped West Mifflin, 8-1, in a Section 4-AAA contest.
Emily Bosworth tripled, doubled and drove in three runs for the Raiders (4-0, 4-0). Pitcher Lauren Minor tossed a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts and no walks.
Amanda Varhula hit a solo home run for the Titans (0-2, 0-2) in the first inning.
• Tori Patera's two triples proved big as Elizabeth Forward edged McGuffey, 6-5, in Section 4-AAA.
Rachel Handel and winning pitcher Kristen Hawkins each doubled for the Warriors (2-1, 3-1). Losing pitcher Alison Kleinhans tripled, while Sierra Spalding and Sam Coffield each doubled for the Highlanders (2-1, 2-1).
• Ashley Nichols struck out eight, walked none and belted a two-run double as Belle Vernon defeated Ringgold, 7-1, in a Section 4-AAA game.
Alana Lacey added a two singles and an RBI, while Heather Sellew hit a one-run double for the Leopards (1-1, 2-2). Ringgold used three pitchers.
• Shaylee Ianno struck out 20 of the 23 batters she faced in Peters Township's 4-0 victory over Canon-McMillan in a Section 4-AAA game.
Ianno also doubled and cracked a solo home run for the Indians, who scored all four runs in the fourth inning. Erica Taylor took the loss.
• Ashley Morran's RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh lifted Trinity to a 1-0 win over Upper St. Clair in a Section 4-AAA game.
Morran's single made a winner of Massie Shaw, who scattered three hits, striking out nine. The Hillers (2-1, 4-3) had five hits.
• An error on a ground ball hit by Jessica Neifert allowed Ashley Weaver to score from first base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Beth-Center defeated South Fayette, 1-0, in a Section 5-AA game.
In the top of the seventh, freshman Karissa Snyder thwarted a rally by South Fayette (1-2, 1-3) when she caught a line drive in rightfield and doubled up a runner to end the threat.
Geri Whitman struck out 17 and tossed a one-hitter for the Bulldogs (1-0, 3-1), while Tonya Carroll and Jessica Schinkovec each went 2-for-3.
• Jordan Jackson belted a three-run home run in the fifth and drove in five as Washington beat Burgettstown, 10-2, in a Section 5-AA game.
Diray Jolly hit a solo home run for the Prexies (2-0, 5-2), while Jenna Phillips finished with a triple, a double and two RBI and Alexis Lopez doubled.
Washington turned a triple play in the bottom of the third inning on a line drive to centerfield.
• Carmichaels took full advantage of 14 walks issued by Geibel pitcher Mia White for a 12-0 win in five innings in Section 2-A.
The Mikes (4-0, 4-1) had just four hits, including a double from Shayleigh Busti. Kacey Osbourne struck out six and yielded three hits.
• Samantha Milliken doubled and drove in two runs as West Greene blanked Frazier, 3-0, in Section 2-A.
Rachel Burns allowed five hits for the Pioneers (2-1, 2-1), who also doubled, as did Chelsey Jones.
• Kristen Conwell pitched a no-hitter and struck out 11 as Chartiers-Houston defeated Bentworth 8-0 in a Section 1-A game.
Chartiers-Houston (3-0, 6-1) scored five runs in the fifth to distance itself from Bentworth (1-2, 3-2). Chelsea Wilson had two hits for the Bucs.
Brynne Bashioum struck out 13 but was the losing pitcher for Bentworth.
• Avella remained undefeated with an 8-2 win over California in Section 2-A.
Michol Drazich had two hits and three RBI for Avella (4-0, 4-0). The Eagles had 13 hits in the game, including doubles by Drazich, Jen Greely and Katie Bednarski.
Bethanie Kern was the winning pitcher for Avella. California dropped to 0-3, 0-4.
• Christa Grim had three hits and five RBI to lead Mapletown past Jefferson-Morgan 9-6 in a Section 2-A game.
Erika Chory also had three hits and scored three runs for Mapletown (2-1, 2-2). Ashley Phillips and Siara Meza each had two hits and two RBI for Jefferson-Morgan (1-2, 2-2).
Miranda Shipley was the winning pitcher. Emily Cottle was the losing pitcher.
Boys baseball
Canon-McMillan continued its torrid start to the 2008 season with a convincing 6-0 win over visiting Mt. Lebanon in a Section 3-AAAA contest.
Matt Pierpont pitched a two-hitter for the Big Macs (2-0, 7-0) and also hit a RBI double. Chris Dittmar doubled and drove in three runs for the second straight day.
Through six innings, Pierpont made 68 pitches as the Blue Devils dropped to 1-1 in section and 2-2 overall.
• West Greene scored six runs in the second and fifth innings as the Pioneers cruised to a 15-5 non-section win over visiting Hundred (W.Va.).
Gary Anderson tripled and doubled for the Pioneers (2-1). Keith Watson smacked two doubles, while Garrett Johnston, Levi Durbin and Wesley Wright each doubled once.
• A couple of costly Mapletown errors led to three runs in the fifth inning and Langley held on for a 3-2, non-section win over the Maples.
Nick Popernack was the hard-luck loser for Mapletown (3-1). Cory Minnick had a double for the Maples.
Langley is now 1-2.
• Burgettstown scored three runs in the top of the seventh to upend Waynesburg 3-1 in a Section 2-AA game.
Tyler Lonchar picked up the win, striking out two and walking one. Josh Snyder struck out eight in a losing effort.
College track
Waynsburg University junior Ashley Dodd was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Field Athlete of the Week.
Dodd, an Upper St. Clair graduate, won the pole vault at the Western Pennsylvania Championships, hosted by Carnegie Mellon last Saturday. Dodd cleared 12.14 feet and qualified for the ECAC Championships on May 16-17 in Springfield, Mass.
College lacrosse
Three different players from Allegheny College scored four goals as the Gators cruised to a 20-9 victory over Washington & Jefferson in women's lacrosse action.
Laura Hoch, Jensen Paterson, Meg Grossman each had four goals to pace Allegheny (3-5). The Gators jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first six minutes as Hoch and Paterson both notched a pair of goals.
The Presidents (1-3), who are competing in their first varsity season, trimmed the lead to 6-2 after goals by junior Laura Peery and freshman attacker Courtney Schrock.
College softball
Waynesburg University failed to score a run and managed just five hits as the Yellow Jackets were swept by St. Vincent in a doubleheader, 2-0 and 4-0.
Autumn Minor struck out eight for Waynesburg (4-10) in the opener and did not walk a batter. In the second game, St. Vincent (14-4) took advantage of three errors.
