College softball

Washington & Jefferson split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with Geneva College at Brooks Park. The Presidents won Game 1, 2-1, but the Golden Tornadoes earned a split with a 6-3 triumph in the second contest.

W&J (20-6) has reached 20 victories in a season for just the fourth time in the program's 22-year history. Only teams from 1996 (26-5), 2005 (21-18) and 2006 (25-15) have produced seasons with 20 or more wins.

Junior pitcher Rebecca Nachreiner improved to 12-2 on the season and lowered her ERA to 1.17 after limiting the Golden Tornadoes to only two hits.

Hannah Schulz homered for the Presidents and Ally Stasik had the game-winning RBI single.

In Game 2, Schulz had two hits and Melissa Metcalf went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.

n Waynesburg dropped a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference games against Bethany. The Yellow Jackets falling 5-3 in the first game and 8-5 in the nightcap.

In Game 1, Bison hurler Heather Immesberger (9-4) earned the complete-game victory after yielding three runs, two earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts. Waynesburg starter Autumn Minor (6-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on 11 hits with four strikeouts.

Hayley Kramer and Minor combined to collect four of the Yellow Jackets' six hits.

In the second game, each team scored three runs in the first inning. Bethany broke the tie with a run in the fourth and three more in the seventh.

Amanda Baughman and Minor each went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

n California swept a pair of extra-innings games from Indiana, winning the first, 4-0 in 10 innings and the second 3-1 in eight. Vulcans pitching held IUP to one run and 16 hits over 18 innings in the PSAC doubleheader.

In Game 1, Danielle Easton, Lauren Yaquinto and Renee Gmiter each drove in a run in a four-run 10th. Sonia Petrosoniak and Maria Greco combined for 10 shutout innings, eight hits, eight strikeouts and three walks.

In the second game, Cal scored twice in the top of the eighth to win it. Yaquinto and Amanda Wallace each drove in a run and Julie Mackenzie had three hits and scored a run.

College baseball

The Waynesburg baseball team scored eight runs in the final two innings of Game 1 against Grove City College to take an 11-10 victory in a PAC doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets suffered an 11-4 loss in the second game.

In the opening game, the Yellow Jackets (4-6, 14-15) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take an 11-8 lead. The Wolverines (3-3, 8-9) added a pair of runs in the ninth before sophomore Dan Novak picked off Butch Kriger at first base to end the game.

Sophomore Zac Rhoades (5-2) earned the win in relief and Novak got the save.

In Game 2, Waynesburg held a 4-3 lead entering the eighth inning, but Grove City roughed up three pitchers for eight runs on eight hits and two walks to post the comeback victory.

n Senior centerfielder Marc Price had five hits and drove in four runs to help Thomas More sweep a Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Washington & Jefferson at Ross Memorial Park.

The Saints (6-0, 13-6) won game one by a 13-7 margin and then completed the sweep with a 7-2 victory in the second contest.

Senior centerfielder Justin Benson led with a 3-for-5 day that included a pair of home runs. He drove in three.

Senior Matt Koopman threw eight strong innings, allowing two unearned runs on six hits, to collect the win.

n California combined for 30 hits in sweeping Clarion in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Vulcans won Game 1, 7-1, and took the nightcap, 12-0.

John Selby and Adam Links each knocked in two runs for Cal in the first game and Corry Ryan tossed seven shutout innings.

In Game 2, Eddie DeJesus led a 19-hit attack by going 4-for-4. Brian Ashburn had a three-run home run and Sam Dimatteo drove in two runs.

Scholastic baseball

Bryan Vallina smashed a grand slam to lead Burgettstown to a 6-1 victory over Weirton Madonna in a non-section game. Sean Tunno doubled and singled for the 4-0 Blue Devils.

n Canon-McMillan scored two runs in the top of the seventh and held on for a 5-3 victory over Bethel Park in a Section 3-AAAA game. Chris Douglas doubled for C-M (4-0, 9-0). Jim Meyer had two doubles for Bethel Park.

Water polo

The Washington & Jefferson College women's water polo teams saw its record fall to 6-9 after dropping home decisions to Grove City, 10-8, and Gannon,12-7, at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.

The Wolverines improved to 8-9 overall, while the Golden Knights upped their record to 8-12.

The Presidents were led by a four-goal effort from junior Alicia Sutton. Freshman Kate Van Schaik added a pair of goals.

College lacrosse

Junior attacker Patrick Zeis had a hand in nine of Fontbonne's goals as the Griffins earned a 13-11 men's lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson at Alexandre Stadium.

Zeis scored six goals and added three assists to help Fontbonne improve to 6-7 on the season. The Presidents' record dropped to 3-7.

Chris Vogel led the W&J offense with four goals and two assists. Zach Devilbiss and Jackson Doyle each added three scores.

College golf

Sophomore Leslie Walker highlighted four Washington & Jefferson women's golfers with a third-place finish on Saturday at the 5th Annual Ohio Northern Lady Polar Bear Invitational hosted at the Colonial Golfers Club.

Walker placed third in an 81-golfer field after shooting 82 (40-42). She was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Franklin's Katie Tewell won the tournament with a five-over par score of 77 (38-39), and Otterbein's Catherine Brunoehler shot 81 to finish second.
