Scholastic baseball

Chuckl Gasti doubled, singled and scored twice to lead Carmichaels to a 4-1 victory over Geibel in Section 1-A. Marcus Robinson knocked in two runs to back the pitching of Joby Lapkowicz, who went seven innings and struck out five.

Nathan Betler had two singles for Geibel (5-2, 7-3).

• Washington escaped a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the seventh before scoring three in the ninth for a 6-3 win at Fort Cherry in Section 2-AA.

In the seventh, Fort Cherry lined into a bases-loaded double play then Washington's Joey Ward threw out the winning run at home plate for the third out.

In the ninth, Mike Damerow hit a two-run single and Tuner Gorby added a sacrifice. Paskert pitched the final two innings for the win as the Prexies (5-1, 5-3) stayed in first place.

Brent Liggett pitched a complete game for the Rangers (0-7, 0-9) and hit a two-run home run.

n Cory Titchnell pitched a complete-game, four-hitter and he hit a double with three RBI as Waynesburg defeated Southmoreland, 9-2, in a non-section game.

Adam Coldren doubled and drove in two for the Raiders (2-8). David Hyde doubled for the Scotties (6-5).

• Peters Township won its second-straight game in impressive fashion as the Indians beat Trinty, 11-0, in a six-inning, non-section game at Consol Energy Park.

Zack Olawski pitched the final three innings to pick up the win for Peters Township (9-5). Jordan Jankowski doubled.

Nate Cataldo doubled for the Hillers (8-4).

Scholastic softball

Breanna Morris hit one of her three singles in the first inning and scored on an Emily Bosworth single as Waynesburg remained atop the Section 4-AAA standings with a 1-0 victory at Belle Vernon.

Lauren Minor struck out 12 for the Raiders (9-1, 9-1) and scattered seven hits.

Heather Sellew doubled for the Leopards (6-5, 7-6) and Ashley Nichols struck out six.

• Allison Kleinhans struck out 10 and allowed four hits as McGuffey stayed in the playoff chase with a 5-1 win at West Mifflin in Section 4-AAA.

Sam Coffield hit a key double for the Highlanders (5-6, 6-6).

Tara Sim struck out seven for the Titans (0-11, 0-11).

• Chelsea Rommes went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Heather Pulver pitched a two-hitter as Burgettstown defeated Charleroi, 11-1, in five innings in Section 2-AA.

Pulver struck out seven and walked none for the Blue Devils (6-4, 7-4). Jessie Faloon and Jordyn Charlier each doubled.

Charleroi (0-9, 2-9) made five errors.

• West Greene clinched a playoff berth out of Section 2-A with a 15-0 win over Geibel in four innings.

Mary Burns went 2-for-3 with three RBI for the first-place Pioneers (9-1, 9-1) and Rachel Burns drove in two runs while coming one hit from pitching a perfect game.

Sarah Burns tripled for West Greene.

• Emily Cottle struck out a career-high 15 as Jefferson-Morgan defeated Frazier, 6-2, in a Section 2-A contest.

Sarah Stepp tripled, doubled and drove in two for the Rockets (3-7, 4-8). Marissa Cameron tripled and Brianna Yackmack doubled.

Angie Kircher struck out 11 for the Commodores (3-7, 5-8).

• Washington got a small measure of revenge on Beth-Center with a 2-0 road victory in a key Section 2-AA game.

Earlier in the season, the Bulldogs' Geri Whitman no-hit the Prexies. This time, Ashley Sadler allowed just one hit for Washington (9-1, 12-3), which moved a game and a half ahead of Beth-Center for first place.

Alexis Lopez scored on a passed ball in the fifth inning and Jenna Phillips came home on a squeeze bunt by Jessica Ketter in the sixth.

Whitman struck out 15 batters for B-C (7-2, 9-3).\

• Kiersten Conwell doubled, tripled and scored three runs to lead Chartiers-Houston to a 16-0, three-inning victory over California in a Section 1-A game.

Jaci Timko doubled and hit a two-run home run and Kaitlyn Rupprecht cracked a solo home run for the Bucs (7-2, 11-3). Bethany Romano doubled. California (2-6, 2-7) had two hits.

• Lyndsie Delprato fired a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and just one walk as Fort Cherry shut out Avella, 10-0, in a five-inning Section 1-A game.

Kaitlyn Hoop and Morgan McHugh tripled, and Harleigh Davidson and Stephanie Pershina doubled for FC (8-2, 9-2).

Avella falls to 6-4 in the section and 7-4 overall.

• Tori Paterra tripled and Rachel Handel doubled as Elizabeth Forward defeated Ringgold, 10-6, in a Section 4-AAA game.

Kristen Hawkins earned the victory for EF (8-2, 9-2), allowing just three hits.

Bonnie Spraul doubled for Ringgold (4-7, 4-8).

College baseball

Thiel used a 23-hit attack to cruise to a 22-7 victory over Waynesburg University during a doubleheader sweep in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

The Tomcats won the second game, 2-1, behind the pitching of Eric Wadowsky.

Thiel used a 12-run sixth inning to win Game 1. Eric Boylan had three doubles and four RBI and Justin Scarpitti had three RBI. Chad Ulogar had three doubles and three runs and Andrew Howard doubled twice and knocked in two runs.

Ryan Group doubled twice and drove in two runs for Waynesburg (4-8, 16-20). Dan Novak added three singles.

In Game 2, Wadowsky outpitched Ryan Lavrusky. Howard and Ulogar drove in the only runs for Thiel (6-4, 21-11) with sacrifice flies. Brendon Steele's home run was the only run for the Yellow Jackets.

Pony baseball

Winning pitcher Nick Riotta had three hits, including a home run, as Ace Sporting Goods outlasted Albert's Meats, 15-14, in a Washington Pony game.

Matt Sachek added three hits, including a double, and drove in the winning runs, while Matt Brower had three hits as well, including a triple. Jake Seabright also doubled for Ace (2-0).

Don McWreath took the loss, while Brandon Lesco tripled and Christian Umbach doubled for Alberts (0-2).

Lacrosse

Jenn Doran scored six goals as Peters Township edged Seton-La Salle, 11-10, in a Section 3 high school girls lacrosse match.

Julie Semiani added three goals, while Lauren Ray and Ally Oleynik had one each, for Peters Township (5-0, 7-2).

PAC golf

Washington & Jefferson College claimed its third consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference men's golf championship following the final round of action at Oak Tree Country Club.

The championship gives W&J the PAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held May 13-16 in Atlanta. The Presidents will compete in the NCAA tournament for the second time in three seasons.

Washington & Jefferson posted a total of 2,453 strokes for the eight rounds to finish 95 shots clear of Thomas More (2,548). Westminster (2,642), Waynesburg (2,649), Grove City (2,658), Bethany (2,813) and Thiel (2,970) rounded out the team standings.

Freshman Brad Cieslinski won the MVP award and medalist honors after finishing the PAC series with 447 strokes. He tied with Grove City's Tyler Fitch, but won a first-hole playoff.

Cieslinski carded a 72-73-145, for a three-over par. Fitch shot a 146.

In the NBA

Dwight Howard had 29 points and 20 rebounds, his second straight 20-20 game, and the Orlando Magic beat the Toronto Raptors 104-103 on Tuesday night for a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series.

• Chris Paul had 32 points and a franchise playoff-record 17 assists, leading New Orleans to a 127-103 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night that gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead in their first-round series.

• Boston's Kevin Garnett won the NBA's defensive player of the year award. He beat out Denver's Marcus Camby and Houston's Shane Battier.

The 6-11 forward led the Celtics with 9.2 rebounds per game.
