Girls softball

A throwing error in the top of the seventh inning provided Peters Township with a crucial run as the Indians went on to defeat perennial power Baldwin, 4-3, in a Section 4-AAAA game Tuesday.

Peters Township (3-1, 5-2) led 4-0 before Baldwin (2-1, 5-2) scored three runs in the seventh.

Lindsay Hoover hit a three-run home run in the first of Baldwin pitcher Beth Doring. Sarah Earley scored a run in the seventh after a throwing error at second base allowed Earley to score from third.

Indians pitcher Shaylee Ianno struck out 12, walked none and allowed four hits.

n Jaci Timko belted a home run and Michelle Greenawalt pitched four scoreless innings as Chartiers-Houston defeated Section 1-A foe Avella, 15-0, in four innings.

Brittany Jones and Jackie Scott each tripled for the Bucs (3-0, 6-0). Greenawalt struck out 10 Avella (0-6, 0-6) batters.

n Victoria Bennett went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI as California edged Monessen, 7-6, in a Section 1-A game.

Liz Shaw struck out 12 and scattered four hits for the Trojans (2-2, 4-4). Carly Cocciolone doubled for Monessen (1-3, 1-4).

n West Greene led 12-4 after four innings, but had to hold off a furious rally by Jefferson-Morgan in the seventh for a 12-10 win in Section 2-A.

The Rockets scored six unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to close the gap. The final out was recorded with the bases loaded.

Sarah Burns and Katie Horr each had two hits, including a double, and three RBI for the Pioneers (4-1, 5-1). Chelsea Jones had three hits, while Rachel Burns struck out 11 to get the victory.

Erin Barbetta had three hits, including a double, Sarah Olson doubled and had three RBI, and Emily Cottle tripled for Jeff-Morgan (3-2, 4-3).

n Waynesburg rallied from an early deficit and Kaylee Barger went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI as the visiting Raiders defeated McGuffey 9-3 in a Section 4-AAA game.

Molly Henderson had a triple and three RBI and Courtney Orndoff added a double for Waynesburg (7-0, 9-0).

McGuffey (0-4, 0-4) got a triple from Kayla Winfield.

n Brittany Bruce's single in the top of the eighth inning scored Priscilla Lamb and gave Elizabeth Forward a 4-3 win over Belle Vernon in Section 4-AAA.

Belle Vernon (2-1, 3-1) got two doubles from Apryl Patterson.

n Canon-McMillan scored in every inning but one, defeating Upper St. Clair, 16-6, in six innings.

The Big Macs (1-3, 3-6) took advantage of six walks and five hit-batters. Selina Pantely had two doubles and Cassie Mamula, Kat Gallagher, Morgan Cross and winning pitcher Brittany Poplisek had one each. Cross was 5-for-5 with four RBI and Sam Melone had three RBI.

Liz Henry doubled for the Panthers (0-4, 0-7).

n Amanda Baughman fired a no-hitter, striking out 11 batters and walking one, and Washington pounded out 16 hits in a 16-0 victory at winless Charleroi in Section 2-AA.

The Prexies (4-0, 8-0) were led by Jenna Phillips and Jordan Jackson. Phillips had three hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in three runs. Jackson homered and had four RBI. Larissa Bistarkey added three hits.

n Morgan Pratt, Shayleigh Busti, Laci Ludrosky and Beth May all doubled to lead a 10-hit Carmichaels attack in a 12-2 Section 2-A victory over visiting Mapletown.

Ludrosky also tripled and Courtney Newland struck out nine and did not issue a walk to earn the win for the Mikes (5-0, 6-0).

Mapletown dropped to 1-4 in the section, 3-4 overall.

n Brownsville's eight-run lead after two innings provided more than enough cushion as the Falcons claimed a 9-1 win over Beth-Center in a Section 2-AA game.

Jen Sheridan had three hits to pace the Falcons (2-2, 3-3).

Rachel Zane had two hits and scored the lone run for Beth-Center (1-2, 3-3). Zane was the losing pitcher despite recording 10 strikeouts.

Boys baseball

Bentworth scored 18 runs without the benefit of an extra-base hit during a five-inning, 18-0 win over Avella in a non-section game.

Lincoln Gibson had two hits to lead the Bearcats (4-1). Derek Jansante picked up the win.

Avella, which committed five errors, dropped to 2-4.

n James Stratico pitched a complete-game one-hitter as Peters Township defeated Baldwin, 10-0, in a Section 3-AAAA game.

Mike DiVella went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI for the Indians (1-1, 5-1). Pete Ross doubled twice and Jim Rider also doubled. Steve Grosse was the losing pitcher and Brian McCann doubled for the Highlanders (1-1, 3-1).

n Burgettstown broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the fourth inning on its way to a 5-3 win over Jefferson-Morgan in a non-section game.

Anthony Tagliaferro doubled and Nick Donati picked up the win in relief for the Blue Devils (2-2). Justin Falcon doubled for Jeff-Morgan (4-3).

n Jeannette scored seven runs in the first inning and set the tone for a 13-9 win at Monessen in a non-section game.

Michael Pica hit a grand slam and doubled for Monessen (1-6), which also got doubles from Phil Tartt and Chuck McGovern.

College baseball

Chartiers-Houston graduate Dan Novak went a combined 4-for-6 with five RBI to help Waynesburg sweep a doubleheader with Penn State-Altoona by scores of 11-4 and 5-2 at Madison Field.

Ryan Group, a McGuffey graduate, had a three-run double and Phil Anderson, also from McGuffey, drove in a run in the first game. McGuffey's Adam Sattler picked up the win, striking out six and allowing only one walk in six innings. Canon-McMillan's Brendon Steele had two hits and scored twice.

In the second game, Novak had two key RBI-doubles and Zac Rhoades, a McGuffey graduate, was the winning pitcher for Waynesburg (11-9).

n John Astfalk allowed just one unearned run in six innings as Washington & Jefferson defeated Penn State-Behrend, 11-1, in a non-conference game.

The Presidents (15-4) scored three times in the first on an RBI double by Chris Varacallo, a run-scoring single by Shaun Pfeil and a sacrifice fly. Ryan Gregg tripled and scored in the fourth and Pfeil knocked in his second run in the fifth.

n California swept a PSAC West doubleheader at Clarion by scores of 7-2 and 10-2.

In the opener, Cal broke open a 3-2 game with four runs in the sixth inning to seal the win for starter Andrew Rafalski, who allowed two runs on four hits in five innings. Dustin Woodring hit a three-run homer and Drew Aniceti added a solo home run.

Corry Ryan allowed one earned run on four hits for a complete game win in the nightcap. Woodring had a two-run single for Cal (6-2, 18-9).

College softball

Waynesburg split a doubleheader against St. Vincent, winning 2-1 and dropping the nightcap, 5-2.

In the opener, Suzi Joyce hit an RBI double. Carmichaels' graduate Autumn Minor gave up just three hits.

Joyce had another RBI double in the second game, but St. Vincent scored five unanswered runs to get the win.

n Julie Mackenzie doubled home the game-winning run and Dana Kobylka added a two-run double, all in the sixth inning, to give California a 4-1 win over Indiana and the split of a PSAC West doubleheader.

Brianna Smith had a two-run single and Trinity graduate Heather Bihler had three hits in the first game, but Cal (4-4, 7-11) fell, 6-4.

Bihler, whose RBI-single tied the first game, 1-1, finished the day with a team-leading four hits, two runs and two RBI.

n Rebecca Nachreiner earned the win in both games of a doubleheader sweep as Washington & Jefferson beat Bethany, 5-1 and 7-6, in PAC play.

Valerie Schultz, a McGuffey High School graduate, had an RBI double in the first game for the Presidents (4-0, 11-6).

W&J led 5-0 afer two innings in the second game, but Bethany (2-4, 10-16) cut the gap to 5-4. The Presidents added two runs, then the Bison countered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh before Nachreiner, who had 15 strikeouts, retired the final two batters. Schultz was 4-for-4 in game two.

College golf

Jon Lodovico and Robert Jewell each had a top-10 finish to help California to fourth-place at the IUP Invitational.

Lodovico finished fifth with a two-day total of 147. Jewell finished eighth at 149. Jewell and Brian Batko each shot 75 and Lodovico carded a 77 Tuesday.
