Peters Township's Doug Subostis and Andrew Nixon lost in the WPIAL Class AAA Doubles championships Friday at North Allegheny High School.
Subostis and Nixon fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to Shady Side Academy's Chris Mengel and Josh Ferraccio, the top seeded team in the tournament.
High school baseball
Cody Andrews went four-for-four with two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored as Carmichaels wrapped up the Section 1-A championship with an 11-4 victory over Frazier in a high school baseball game.
Winning pitcher Billy Musgrave had two doubles for the Mikes (12-0, 15-1), who also received doubles from Joby Lapkowicz, Marcus Robinson and Zach Durbin.
Losing pitcher Dave Genua doubled, and Jason Berclovich had four hits, including a two-run homer, and four RBI for Frazier (4-7, 6-7).
n Bentworth used a five-run second inning and some clutch relief pitching by Ty Bell to defeat host Jefferson-Morgan, 6-4, in a key Section 1-A game.
The Bearcats (7-5, 8-6) had three of their seven hits in the big second inning and were helped by a pair of bases-loaded walks.
Bell shut out J-M (8-3, 12-3) over the final four innings, working out of several jams. The Rockets stranded 10 baserunners and left men on second and third twice.
Bell helped his own cause with a double and David Montibeller's double was the lone extra-base hit for the Rockets. Brent Moskola had a two-run single in J-M's four-run third inning.
n Canon-McMillan clinched a spot in the WPIAL playoffs with a 13-0, five-inning victory over Baldwin in a Section 3-AAAA game. Chris Dittmar hit a solo home run and Steve Roach, Chris Douglas and Aaron Wiegel each cracked a double for the Big Macs (10-3, 15-3).
Baldwin is 0-13, 0-16.
n Matt Hartman hit two doubles and drove in four runs to lead California to a 17-3, six-inning victory over Mapletown in a Section 1-A game. Hartman was the winning pitcher, striking out 10 and walking one.
Ben Carson tripled, Dustin Martinak doubled and Zac Edmiston hit two doubles for California (5-6, 8-7). Chris Drew, Chris Jeffrey and Matt Pratt each had a double for Mapletown (2-10, 6-12).
n Winning pitcher Jason Paris and Ryan Parker both homered as Chartiers-Houston remained unbeaten in Section 2-A with a 9-1 victory over Monessen.
Paris allowed four hits and struck out nine for the Bucs (13-0, 14-2), who also got doubles from Andy Petras and Mark Jones.
Monessen is 3-10, 3-14.
n Charleroi held off a seventh-inning rally to take a 7-5 victory from Burgettstown in Section 2-AA. Brad Price and Brady Kovalcik each had a double for the Cougars, who led 7-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Brian Pavan doubled and singled twice and Sean Tunno tripled for Burgettstown (4-6, 7-6).
n Eric Landman and Rob Chafin each hit a triple to help Brownsville take a 6-2 victory from Waynesburg in a Section 2-AA game. Matt Fox and Cory Pitchnell each had a double for the Raiders (1-9, 2-12).
n Peters Township won its sixth game in a row in impressive fashion, whipping Mt. Lebanon, 16-1, in three innings to pull into a second place tie in section 3-AAAA.
Pete Ross and Nick Merich drove in four runs each, with Ross doubling and collecting three hits, and Merich homering and also collecting three hits.
Winning pitcher Jordan Jankowski also doubled, as did Mike Bivella for the Indians (8-5, 13-5).
Mt. Lebanon (7-6, 8-9) is the last team to beat the Indians, having done so, 12-2, April 18. Since then, the Indians have outscored their opponents 62-7.
n Our Lady Sacred Heart's Graham Harkins held Avella to three hits as the Chargers defeated the Eagles 3-0 in Section 2-A.
OLSH (5-7, 6-8) scored one run in the second inning and two in the seventh. Avella fell to (9-4, 10-6).
Fernbaugh doubled for Avella, as did OLSH's Matt Radke.
n Mike Kuvitza went 4-for-4 and Blake Robinson had two doubles for Albert Gallatin in a 7-1, non-section win over Beth-Center.
Mike Bodnar doubled for Beth-Center (7-7). Albert Gallatin improved to 4-12.
High school softball
Jenna Phillips hit for the cycle for Washington in a 15-2 win over Brownsville in Section 2-AA.
Phillips had five hits, including a grand slam, and drove in seven runs for the Prexies (13-1, 16-3). Her grand slam came in a 10-run fifth inning for Washington. Jocelyn Floyd, Alexis Lopez and Hannah Cohen all doubled for Washington.
Winning pitcher Ashley Sadler struck out eight and allowed two hits. Brownsville is 6-8, 10-9.
n Marissa Midler had three hits and two RBI for Avella in a 7-2 win over California in a Section 1-A game.
Bethanie Kern had two hits and an RBI for the Eagles (9-5, 10-5). Kern was also the winning pitcher. She allowed one hit and struck out nine.
n Carmichaels had little trouble with Geibel as the Mikes routed the Gators, 20-0, in four innings in a Section 2-A game.
Morgan Pratt had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI for Carmichaels (11-1, 11-2). Memry Jordan and Autumn Wozny also doubled for the Mikes and Jade McCann tripled.
Kasey Osborne tossed a no-hitter for Carmichaels. She struck out five and walked two.
n Kaitlyn Novak homered, doubled, scored three runs and drove in two more for Mapletown in a 12-2, six-inning win over Frazier in Section 2-A.
Christa Grim had two hits and two RBI for Mapletown (7-5, 7-7) and Wendy Dickerson had two hits and three RBI. Heather Shook and Kayla Stevulak each tripled for the Maples. Miranda Shipley was the winning pitcher.
n Winning pitcher Emily Cottle struck out nine and Sara Stepp drove in three runs as Jefferson-Morgan kept its playoff hopes alive with a 7-2 victory over host Geibel in Section 2-A.
Cott scattered eight hits as J-M improved its records to 6-8 and 7-9. Stepp and Brianna Yackmack each had three hits for the Rockets, Siara Meza belted a triple and Marissa Cameron doubled.
PAC softball
Bethany rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a spot in Saturday's Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament championship round after a 3-1 victory over Washington & Jefferson at Brooks Park.
The third-seeded Bison (21-21) meet the winner of the 11 a.m. game today between No. 1 W&J and No. 4 Waynesburg.
In an early game, Chartiers-Houston graduate Tanesha Minney smacked an opposite-field home run in the bottom of the fifth to give W&J a 1-0 victory over Waynesburg.
Minney's home run cleared the left-centerfield fence for the only run of the game. Pitcher Rebecca Nachreiner collected her 16th victory by limiting the Yellow Jackets to three hits. She struck out nine.
Waynesburg stayed alive with a 5-0 win over Thomas More in an elimination game. Wash High graduate Amanda Baughman tossed her first career complete-game shutout - a three-hitter - and Autumn Minor broke a scorless tie with a two-run homer.
PSAC softball
California was eliminated from the PSAC tournament after a second loss, 1-0 in nine innings to Indiana. The Vulcans (26-16), who have been in 13 of the last 14 NCAA Division II tournaments, could still make the tournament as an at-large entry.
Against IUP, Erin Holloway outdueled Sonia Petrosoniak. Holloway struck out 14, walked two, and allowed two hits. Petrosoniak allowed three hits and an unearned run.
Pony baseball
Jason Van Kirk's suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the ninth inning scored James Evans and gave Fairmont Supply a 7-6 victory over Claysville in a Washington Pony game.
Zack Kavolak and Derek Bedenbaugh homered, and Jaylin Kelly doubled and tripled for Fairmont (5-0). Jason Poland was the winning pitcher.
Harold McCutchem, Caleb Reihner and Deven Pedranke doubled for Claysville (4-2).
