California University of Pennsylvania will honor a 102-year-old graduate and retired professor at its president’s gala next week.

Rose Greco Hughes of Hiller is being honored with school’s Lillian M. Bassi Core Values Award because of the way she touched the lives of students during her 35-year tenure at Cal U.

She is believed to be the oldest living alumni of the university, a Cal U. spokesman said today.

She graduated in 1925 from Cal U. when it was known as South Western State Normal School. Her 600 classmates paid just $20 a year to enroll for classes.

Hughes went on to teach at the school and monitor students teachers of special education until she retired in May 1974.

Cal U. President Angelo Armenti Jr. also will honor two professors, Rebecca Hess and Joseph Heim, during the June 6 event at Omni William Penn Hotel, Pittsburgh.

Hughes will not attend the dinner, but guests will be shown a video of her acceptance speech. Copyright Observer Publishing Co.
