Cal tennis in Elite Eight
Freshman Olga Alekseeva rallied after losing the first set to win in a third-set tiebreaker to lift California to a 5-4 victory over South Carolina-Upstate in the third round of the 2007 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships in Altamonte Fla.
The victory lifts Cal (28-1) into Thursday's 1 p.m. Elite Eight match against West Florida (21-6), which posted a 5-1 victory over Abilene Christian.
Cal, which shut out 10-straight opponents and 23 of 29, was surprised in the doubles competition when Inga Chilingaryan and Yumi Matsuto, ranked among the top 10 in the nation all year, suffered an 8-6 setback.
The other two Vulcan doubles teams posted wins, sending Cal into singles action with a 2-1 lead. Lisa Santoro and Helena VanEysendeyk had an 8-5 victory and the No. 3 team of Katie Anderson and Nina Reiswich was an 8-3 winner.

That left the match in the hands of Alekseeva, who dropped the first set 6-3, but responded with a second-set win by the same margin.
