The supermarket chain has applied to the state Liquor Control Board to obtain a liquor license for a handful of stores, including one at Strabane Square in South Strabane Township.
South Strabane Township solicitor Thomas Lonich said at Tuesday's board of supervisors meeting that Giant Eagle has requested to transfer a liquor license into the township so it can sell beer at its Strabane Square store.
According to Dick Roberts, spokesman for Giant Eagle, the O'Hara Township-based grocery store also made application to the LCB to obtain liquor licenses for stores in Allegheny County and Erie.
"This is not new to Giant Eagle," said Roberts, noting the grocery store sells beer in its stores in Ohio and West Virginia.
"It's an opportunity for retailers to provide one more service under their roof," he said. "It's been very well-received in Ohio and West Virginia."
Roberts said specific details, including the hours during which Giant Eagle would be permitted to sell alcohol and the types of beer available for purchase, have not yet been determined.
Supervisors plan to hold a public hearing during the July 14 meeting.
Also Tuesday, supervisors adopted a proposed zoning ordinance and a proposed amendment to the zoning district map to rezone property bounded by Racetrack Road, the Chartiers Township boundary and Manifold Road from C-2 general commercial to a new C-3 regional commercial classification. The ordinance affects about 300 acres of property, including the Bass Pro complex.
The purpose of C-2 zoning is to provide commercial uses for the convenience of area-wide consumers, while C-3 zoning is intended to accommodate shopping, lodging, entertainment and other facilities that attract regional visitors who might travel as far as 150 miles.
Voting in favor of the ordinance were supervisors Bob Hollick, Robert Koman and Dan Piatt. Opposed were Ed Mazur and Tom Moore.
The board also unanimously accepted a proposal from Huntington Insurance for 2009-10 insurance coverage at a cost of $30,796.
