JONATHAN RYAN MCCAFFREY

Jonathan Ryan McCaffrey, infant son of Peter J. and Christina M. Allen McCaffrey of Sharpsville, died shortly after his birth Tuesday, July 1, 2008, in UPMC-Horizon hospital, Farrell.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his maternal grandparents, Kathy and James Allen of Polasky; his paternal grandmother, Alice McCaffrey of New Castle, formerly of Muse; his maternal great-grandmother, Geraldine Majocka of New Castle; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends will be received from 10 to 10:30 a.m., the time of a Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Joseph McCaffrey as celebrant, Friday, July 4, in Notre Dame Church, 2325 Highland Road, Hermitage. Interment will follow in St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage. THOMAS A. HICKMAN

Owner of Tom's Auto Service, Willoughby, Ohio

Thomas A. Hickman, 75, of Willoughby, Ohio, formerly of Eastlake, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, in Hospice of the Western Reserve, Cleveland.

He was born April 30, 1933, in Beallsville, a son of Allen and Mary Hickman.

Mr. Hickman was a U.S. Army veteran and member of American Legion in Willowick, Ohio, and Willoughby Eagles.

He was owner of Tom's Auto Service in Willoughby for the past 26 years and past owner of Tom & Jeff's Arco in Eastlake.

Surviving are his mother, Mary Hickman; children Lori Walled, Jeff Hickman Sr., Nancy (Jeff) Lang, Thomas (Terri) Hickman and Barry (Jennifer) Hickman; grandchildren Kim (Lee) DiSanza, Tommy Walled, Jeff (Melissa) Hickman Jr., Kelly Hancock, Darrel Hickman, Vince (Kristin) Hickman, T.J., Josh and Katie Hickman and Hunter and Brooke Hickman; three brothers, Howard (Elaine), Ron (Peg) and Wayne Hickman; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving is his first wife, Catherine Hickman.

Deceased are his father, Allen Hickman, and second wife, Lois Hickman.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7:30 p.m., the time of services, Thursday, July 3, in Monreal Funeral Home, 35400 Curtis Boulevard, Eastlake. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, in Beallsville Cemetery.

St. Mary's Episcopal Church member enjoyed gardening

Ann L. Wuycheck Herilla, 82, of Bentleyville, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, in Jefferson Regional Medical Center, Jefferson Hills.

She was born June 28, 1926, in Bentleyville, a daughter of John and Mary Wuycheck.

A homemaker, Mrs. Herilla enjoyed gardening and painting.

She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Charleroi.

On February 23, 1946, in Monongahela, she married Mike (Mitch) Herilla, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Susan Smiley (husband Greg) and Nadine Connor, both of Bentleyville; three grandchildren, Tara Marie Herilla, Timi Lynn Close (husband Harry) and Stephen Connor; two great-grandchildren, Noah Close and Izabella Connor; a sister, Mary Puskarich of York; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are two sons, Tim Herilla and John Eric (Ricky) Herilla, and eight brothers, Stephen, Michael, Pete, Frank, Andy, John and Joseph Wuycheck and an infant brother.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville (724-239-2255), where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, with Father William Ilgenfritz, pastor of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, officiating. Anna Tomik, 96, of Southminster Place, Washington, formerly of Marianna, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, in Washington Hospital.

She was born July 18, 1911, in Smilno, Slovakia, a daughter of John and Mary Spak Anderek.

Mrs. Tomik was a member of Sts. Mary and Ann Roman Catholic Church, St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, in Marianna and its Christian Mothers.

She enjoyed going to Washington Senior Citizen Center on West Maiden Street and playing bingo.

On July 17, 1933, in Smilno, she married John Tomik, who died December 31, 1992.

Surviving are her dear children and their spouses, three daughters, Martha (Paul) Veltri of Washington, Mary Ann (Lou) Shogan of Levittown and Florence Brovey of Bentleyville; two sons, John Tomik of Gloucester City, N.J., William (Carolyn) Tomik of Rainbow City, Ala.; a sister, Susan Mihalek of Ellsworth; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her husband, are an infant daughter, Anna Marie; three brothers, Paul, Andrew and John Anderek; two sisters, Mary Mihalek and Margaret Petrus; and a son-in-law, Tony Brovey.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Nichol Funeral Home, 1873 East Maiden Street, Washington.

Mersky's Nursery

Louis S. Mersky, 93, formerly of Houston, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, in Easy Living Estates, New Stanton.

He was born September 11, 1914, in Arden, a son of Louis S. and Pauline M. Mersky.

Prior to relocating to 2710 Raymond Avenue, Latrobe, in 2001, he resided for 53 years at 2317 West Pike Street, Houston, where he owned and operated his family-run tree and ornamental shrubbery business, Mersky's Nursery.

Additionally, he was employed as a draftsman at Fort Pitt Bridge Works in Canonsburg until his retirement in 1972.

Mr. Mersky had a lifelong, deep-seated Catholic faith and served for years as president of Holy Name Society for both Miraculous Medal Church in Meadow Lands and Immaculate Conception Church in Washington. He was also a 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus.

He was an avid landscaper and fisherman and enjoyed golf, old cars and winemaking, as well as stamp and coin collecting.

For the past 67 years, he was married to Mary A. Mersky, who survives. Together, they had four children, and he became the loving grandfather of seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, two daughters and their families: Michael and Ruth Mersky of Mt. Airy, Md., their daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Alex Yokley, and grandson, Eric, and son Michael Mersky, of Baltimore, Md.; Dennis and Marybeth Mersky of Tallmadge, Ohio, and their daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Paul Cherry, of Oakmont; Mary Lou and Robert J. Klinger of Harrisburg, their daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Robert Schanke, and granddaughters Noella and Julianne, of Middletown, their daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Aldo Morelli, and grandson, Alex, of Harrisburg, and their daughter, Kristen Klinger of Harrisburg; and Theresa and Robert L. Rogers of Latrobe and their daughter and son-in-law, Gabrielle and Eric Nieman, and granddaughter, Lorelei, of Morgantown, W.Va., and their son, Douglas Rogers of Latrobe.

Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in John J. Lopatich Funeral Home Inc., 601 Weldon Street, Latrobe, where Knights of Columbus 940 will hold services at 7 p.m. and Knights of Columbus 4th Degree St. Vincent Assembly will stand Color Guard from 7 to 8 p.m.

There will be no visitation Friday.

ALFRED BERNARD

WWII vet was former mayor of Houston

Alfred (Fred) Bernard, 89, of Washington, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born October 8, 1918, in Midland (Chartiers Township), a son of Fiorentino and Mary Dusie Bernard.

Mr. Bernard retired in 1981 from the former McGraw-Edison, Canonsburg.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Forces.

Mr. Bernard attended Canonsburg High School, was the former mayor of Houston for two terms and a councilman for 10 years. He was a life member of Houston Volunteer Fire Department, Houston Independent Club and Canonsburg Sportsman Club and a member of American Legion Post 902 of Houston, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg, Bears Club of Meadow Lands, SNPJ 138 of Strabane, Elks Lodge 776 of Washington and Senior Citizens of Houston and Washington.

On July 8, 1942, he married Anna May Chantos, who died June 13, 2001.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen Stenger and Carol Miller, and a brother, Louis Bernard.

Private services and interment were held in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Arrangements by Hummell and Barnhill Funeral Home Inc., 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor, and Douglas M. Jones, funeral director.
