Peters Township is assured of claiming the WPIAL Section 5-AAA doubles championship. The duo of Doug Subosits and Pat Kennedy will face teammates Drew Hancheric and Adam Marnik in the finals.
Both pairings had a bye in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Subosits and Kennedy defeated Ringgold's Zach Smith and Thomas Hric, 10-0, and Trinity's Val Carter-Dave Dwornik, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals.
Hancheric-Marnik defeated Moon's Travis Duncan and Zack Kovacik, 10-4, to advance to the semifinals, where they defeated Bethel Park's Alex Ehrman-Vignesh Iyer, 6-2, 6-3.
In 1-AA, Andy Sickles and Joel Pintola of Washington advanced to the semifinals but lost to Eric Bradley-Scott Swank (Mt. Pleasant), 7-5, 6-0. They face Southmoreland's Nathan Walsh-Alex Passaga to reach the WPIAL championships. The top three teams advance.
Baseball
Andrew Sweat's bases-clearing double in the fourth inning broke open a tight game and helped Trinity defeat Ringgold, 8-3, in a Section 4-AAA contest.
Nick Weaver and Matt Shade each drove in two runs for the Hillers (4-2, 5-3). Sweat also had a sacrifice fly and finished with four RBI and Andrew Armstrong also collected three hits.
Shade pitched five innings for the win. Ringgold dropped to 1-5, 2-6.
• Troy Cree pitched a complete-game three-hitter and also tripled as Waynesburg defeated Beth-Center 9-1 in a Section 2-AA contest.
Todd Chisler had a solo home run for Beth-Center (1-3, 1-6) in the first, but Cree held down the Bulldogs the rest of the way.
Ken Blackwell had three hits and drove in three runs for Waynesburg (3-2, 3-4) while Scott Throckmorton tripled and Nick Stewart doubled in the win. John Cherup was the losing pitcher.
• Andy Petras and Kyle Thomas combined on a five-inning no-hitter for Chartiers-Houston, which defeated Monessen, 10-0, in Section 2-A.
Petras also doubled and had two RBI. A.J. Kerr hit a two-run homer and had three RBI, and Jason Paris and Andy Lorenzi both doubled for the Bucs (5-1, 8-1).
The Greyhounds fell to 1-6, 1-11.
• California blew a seventh-inning lead but recovered to defeat Carmichaels, 7-6, and hand the Mikes their first Section 1-A loss.
Carmichaels tied the score at 6-6 in the top of the seventh on Marcus Robinson's single, scoring Ethan Virgili, who doubled.
In the bottom half, the Trojans (5-1, 11-1) hit three straight singles, including Zach Jeney's game-winner that scored Matt Hartman.
Robinson also doubled and Virgili had three RBI for the Mikes (5-1, 6-3). Jeney had four hits, including a three-run homer, and Dominic Roach drove in two runs for California.
• Canon-McMillan scored seven runs in the second inning and pounded out 15 hits to win its fourth game in a row, 11-7, over Section 2-AAAA rival Baldwin.
Matt Mish tripled, while Chris Dittmar, Brian Kretz and Matt Pierpont doubled for the Big Macs (5-3, 10-3). Brian Moransky got the win.
• In Section 1-A, Ryan Edwards hit a two-run homer as part of Jefferson-Morgan's five-run fourth inning, and the Rockets defeated Bentworth, 10-0, in six innings.
Terry Lawrence (five strikeouts) and David Montibeller combined on the four-hitter.
The Rockets (4-2, 7-4) also got a home run from Travis Watson and doubles by Noah Pust and Justin Falcon. Pust and Jarrod Moskola had two RBI each.
Derek Jansante doubled for the Bearcats (4-2, 7-2).
• Mike Rhoads homered and struck out seven as Brownsville defeated Fort Cherry, 14-6, in Section 2-AA.
Justin Gibson had a two-run homer for the Falcons (5-1, 6-5). Zach Crowley and Josh Snatchko both hit a three-run home run and Dan Saftner and Dave Phillips each doubled for the Rangers (1-4, 2-6).
• McGuffey scored first, but saw Elizabeth Forward come back and defeat the Highlanders, 7-5, in Section 4-AAA.
Luke Baker doubled and Nate Parry hit a two-run homer for McGuffey (0-5, 0-7). Parry had three RBI.
• Avella lost a doubleheader to Our Lady of Sacred Heart, 6-2 and 14-0, in Section 2-A.
Chris Khouri had the only extra base hit for the Eagles (4-3, 5-6), a double in the first game.
OLSH (5-1, 8-2) got complete games from Mike Cercone and Graham Harkins.
• A 10-run second inning, highlighted by Alex Evans' grand slam, powered Washington to a 13-3 victory in five innings over Charleroi in a Section 2-AA game.
J.J. Paskert had three hits and three RBI and Joe Ward and Turner Gorby each had a double. Gorby also drove in three for the Prexies (4-1, 4-4).
Charleroi fell to 2-3 in the section.
Softball
Michelle Greenawalt pitched a one-hitter and Jaci Timko homered and tripled for Chartiers-Houston in a 9-0 Section 2-A win over California.
Timko homered on the first pitch of the game and finished with three hits and two RBI for the Bucs (7-0, 10-0). Kaitlyn Rupprecht also had a solo home run in the seventh for C-H. Devon Strimel doubled.
Greenawalt struck out nine and walked one. Elizabeth Shaw had 11 strikeouts but took the loss for California (4-4, 6-6).
• Melissa Rankin had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs as Bentworth defeated OLSH 7-5 in a non-section game.
Stephanie Wytovich also had three hits and three RBI for Bentworth (7-2). Alyssa Zrimsek was the winning pitcher.
Danielle Nardozzi homered for OLSH (6-2) and Emily Kyragyros was the losing pitcher.
• Trailing 5-4 in the top of the seventh, Carmichaels scored twice to preserve its undefeated record, beating Jefferson-Morgan, 6-5, in a Section 2-A game.
In the seventh, Morgan Pratt scored on a groundout to tie the game, then Laci Ludrosky doubled in Ashley Chernisky with two outs to give the Mikes (9-0, 10-0) the lead.
Ashley Naylor, Erin Barbetta and Sara Stepp all doubled for the Rockets (3-5, 4-6).
• Beth-Center scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a tie game and defeat Burgettstown, 7-2, in Section 2-AA.
Jessica Schinkovec hit a two-out, two-run single in the inning and Tyffini Balog also drove in two runs. Amanda Higinbotham tripled and Geri Whitman struck out 13 for the Bulldogs (3-2, 4-4).
Wendi Bandi doubled for the Blue Devils (5-4, 6-5).
• Washington's offense unloaded on Brownsville, defeating the Falcons 19-0 in five innings in Section 2-AA.
Amanda Baughman doubled and homered to finish with six RBI and Jenna Phillips and Meghan Warner each doubled twice with four RBI. Hannah Cohen tripled and doubled and the Prexies (9-0, 13-1) also had doubles from Jordan Jackson, Alexis Lopez and Ashton Molinaro.
• Kaitlin Hoop hit a three-run home run in the first inning as Fort Cherry rolled to an 11-1, five-inning victory at Avella in Section 1-A.
Harley Davidson went 3-for-3 with a triple and Lindsay Relihan struck out eight for the Rangers (5-5, 7-6). The Eagles fell to 1-7, 1-7.
• Rachel Burns doubled, drove in three runs and was the winning pitcher as West Greene defeated Geibel, 12-2, in five innings in a Section 2-A game.
Katie Horr doubled for the Pioneers (6-2, 7-3) and Alyson Clark had two RBI. West Greene had only five hits but took advantage of 10 walks and five hit batters.
• Thamar Perry, Alana Lacey and Heather Sellew each knocked in two runs to power Belle Vernon to a 10-0, five-inning victory over Upper st. Clair in a non-section game.
Perry, Sellew, Megan Chadwell and Ashley Nichols each had a double for BV (5-3). Nichols allowed only two hits and struck out eight. USC fell to 7-5.
Pony baseball
Cecil No. 1 opened the Greater Route 50 Pony season with a 9-0 win over Avella.
Jack Magera had a complete game with 11 strikeouts. Nick Smutney and Jack Camper each doubled for Cecil while Doug Wilson had three hits.
• Slovenian Savings & Loan defeated Dick's Sporting Goods, 16-10, in a Canon-Mac Pony game. No other information was provided to the Observer-Reporter.
• Trenton Bedillion tripled and drove in three runs as Fred Moore's Trucking defeated South Franklin, 14-0.
Dylan Oliver doubled and had four RBI and Logan McAnny doubled for Fred Moore's Trucking (1-0). Tyler Briggs, the winning pitcher , struck out eight.
Tyler Walker struck out three in the loss for South Franklin (0-1).
• Julian Anderson tripled and was the winning pitcher as Chambers Insurance won a slugfest over Pliska's Auto Body, 21-19, in a Washington Pony game.
Austin Moss tripled for Chambers (1-0) and Andrew Glover doubled.
Christian Umbach was the losing pitcher for Pliska's (0-1). Tyler Gross doubled in the loss.
College baseball
Waynesburg dropped a doubleheader to Shenandoah, 15-12 and 13-0.
Jon Conn homered with three RBI in game one for the Yellow Jackets (14-14). Brandon Dittmar and Landon Sinclair had two RBI each.
Adam Kessel and Josh Campbell drove in two runs each in the win.
Daniel Eadie threw a complete game for Shenandoah (24-14) in the second game. He struck out three.
College Golf
In just its second varsity season, the California University women's golf team was selected as one of six teams to compete in the NCAA Division II East Regional Championship Tournament April 30-May 2 at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids (Mich.).
Cal coach MerriLyn Gibbs has guided the Vulcans to eight tournament titles over the past two years.
The reward for that success was the first NCAA bid in the team's brief history.
Cal will compete against Drury, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Indianapolis and Northwood in the 54-hole regional championship. The top two teams in the regional will advance to the national championship tournament, to be held May 9-12 at Stonebrook Golf Club in Pensacola, Fla.
• Waynesburg high School graduate Tommy Rohanna shot an 80 to lead Waynesburg College at the McBride-Behringer-Allen Invitational at Grove City Golf Club.
Waynesburg finished third as a team with a team score of 332. Saint Vincent College with a score of 314.
