Loving son, husband and father
Philip Longenecker Bachman, 79, of Fairfax, Va., passed away Sunday, January 4, 2009, in Inova Fairfax Hospital.
He was born in Lancaster and grew up in Washington, having graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 1951. He had resided in Fairfax County since the late 1950s.
Mr. Bachman worked as a principal engineer for Melpar E-Systems in Falls Church, Va., before retiring in 1991.
He was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed bird watching, drawing and painting. He was a founding member of Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax.
Surviving are a sister, Barbra Bachman Hann and husband Elwood Hann of Lititz; a brother, Kenton L. Bachman and wife Mary F. Bachman of Warminster; six children, John of Richmond, Va., Wayne of Fairfax, Mark (Lori) of Winston-Salem, N.C., Gary (Ruth) of Media, Amy Bachman Keller (Russ) of Pottstown and Craig (Jane) Of Fredericksburg, Va.; and 10 grandchildren, Greg, Christopher, Mary Grace, Stephanie, Scott, Samuel, Heather, Karis, Philip and Timothy.
Deceased are his parents, Harvey and Mary E. Bachman; and his wife of 43 years, Margaret McKee Bachman.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 8, in Providence Presbyterian Church, Fairfax. Burial will be at Moravian Church Cemetery, Lititz. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be sent to Providence Presbyterian Church, 9019 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, VA 22301.

Anna Mae Brewer
Member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church
Anna Mae Baran Brewer, 86, of Uniontown, formerly of Greene County, died peacefully at 6 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2009, in Lafayette Manor, Beachwood Court, Uniontown.
She was born Friday, November 24, 1922, in Uniontown, a daughter of Andrew Baran and Elizabeth Medwith Baran.
Mrs. Brewer was a member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church in Carmichaels.
She enjoyed sewing and painting.
Before its closing, she worked as head bookkeeper for Union Supply in Greene County for many years.
On June 29, 1947, she married William Paul Brewer, who died February 12, 2002.
Surviving are her cousin and caregiver, Danell Pepson of Chalk Hill; a sister, Mrs. James Carlsen of Washington state; two sisters-in-law, Irene Brewer Mctague of Alexandria, Va., and Cecil Brewer Rush of Waynesburg; and a niece, Pamela, and nephew Gregory.
She also leaves her other caregivers, Donald McNaughton and Glady McNaughton.
In addition to her parents and husband, deceased are two brothers.

Charles Gratz
Longtime Jessop Steel employee enjoyed hunting
Charles (Bob) Gratz, 80, of Washington, died Monday, January 5, 2009, in Donnell House, Washington. He had been ill since November 13.
He was born June 19, 1928, in Washington, a son of Clyde E. and Pearl M. Loughman Gratz.
Mr. Gratz worked at Hazel-Atlas and then worked as a pipe fitter at Jessop Steel for 38 years.
He enjoyed hunting and woodworking.
On December 20, 1947, he married Dorothy A. Parsons, who died February 6, 2004.
Surviving are a son, Donald W. (Ellen) Gratz of Washington; two daughters, Carolyn (Charlie) Emery of Eighty Four and Debi (Ray) Marshall of Washington; a brother, Jim Gratz of Washington; eight grandchildren, Michelle, Jimmie, Tyler, Donnie, Steven, Julie, Tiffany and Heather; and four great-grandchildren.
Deceased is a brother, Clyde “Sonny” Gratz Jr.

H. Scott Meikle
Fallowfield Township resident, WWII veteran
H. Scott Meikle, 89, of Fallowfield Township, died Monday, January 5, 2009, in his home.
He was born November 3, 1919, in North Charleroi, a son of John M. and Leota Sutton Meikle.
Mr. Meikle was a sergeant in World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Sq. 7th Armored Division. He served in the Battle of the Bulge as a tank commander.
Mr. Meikle was a member of Charleroi Presbyterian Church, where he also was a former elder and a member of the finance committee. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 167 and BPOE Lodge 494, both of Charleroi, and was a life member of Slavic Citizen Club of North Charleroi and Painter’s Local Union 6.
He was an avid Pitt fan and loved playing euchre with the butcher gang of Lock 4. He loved deer hunting and his pool and all of the Fourth of July parties, but he especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
Mr. Meikle was co-owner of Charleroi Paint & Glass Co. Inc. and Peppel & Meikle Painting & Decorating.
Surviving are a son, Scott L. Meikle and wife Janice of Pooler, Ga.; two daughters, Marilyn J. Meikle of North Cape May, N.J., and Linda G. Sprowls and husband Curtis of West Pike Run Township; a brother, John M. Meikle and wife Ann of Fallowfield Township; two sisters, Frances “Tootie” Anderson of Charleroi and Agnes Biagini and husband Hugo of Lock 4; five grandchildren, Scott A. Meikle, Daniel L. Meikle, Elizabeth L. Sprowls, Marlinda R. Sprowls and Emma C. Sprowls; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He also leaves his longtime friend, Betty Sager.
In addition to his parents, deceased are his wife, Jayne Peppel Meikle; and two brothers, Charles and William Meikle.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 226 Fallowfield Avenue, Charleroi, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 9. Joan Elizabeth Long Pahl
Peters Township H.S. grad was retired teacher
Joan Elizabeth Long Pahl, 73, of Winter Park, Fla., passed away Friday, January 2, 2009.
She was born June 4, 1935, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Walter F. and Elizabeth Irwin Long.
Mrs. Pahl had been a resident of Winter Park since 1972. She graduated from Peters Township High School, Chatham College and the University of Pittsburgh.
Before retirement, she was a teacher, having taught middle and high school in West Virginia and Florida and was a VR counselor for the state of Florida.
In 1951, at the age of 16, Mrs. Pahl contracted polio. She was a patient of Dr. Jonas Salk and was one of the first to receive the anti-polio vaccine. In 1955, she was honored at the New York Newspaper Guild Page One Ball, where she accepted special awards on behalf of Salk.
Deceased are her parents and a brother, Walter.
Surviving are a son, Lee and wife Sharon and their two children, Megan and Justin of College Park; a daughter, Lori and husband Peter Tankel and their three children, Andrew, Jennifer and Amanda of Winter Park; a brother, Robert and wife Jane of Pittsburgh; nieces Susan and Nancy; nephews Walter, John, Rob, David and Bruce; two grand-nephews, Cody and Jesse; and a grand-niece, Erin.
She also leaves her six cats.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 10, in Church of the Good Shepherd, Maitland, Fla., with the Rev. Ronald L. Robison, interim rector, officiating. Florence J. Powell
1932 Claysville High School graduate
Florence J. Powell, 93, a 49-year resident of Riverside, Calif., passed away Sunday, January 4, 2009, in Riverside Community Hospital, with her nephew, Joe, and niece, Crystal, by her side.
She was born August 6, 1915.
Mrs. Powell graduated from Claysville High School in 1932.
She was a supervisor at Montgomery Ward for 35 years.
Mrs. Powell had been a member of Pocahontas of Tippercanoe Council No. 238 since August 19, 1974.
Surviving are her stepdaughter, Kathryn McKay of Smartsville, Calif.; two stepsons, David Powell and Peter Powell, both of Wailuku, Hawaii; a brother, Joseph E. Daughtery Sr. and wife Marilyn of Claysville; and several nieces and nephews, including Joseph “Butch” Daughtery and Crystal Morris of Claysville, who were her caregivers.
Deceased is her husband, Howard T. “Hookie” Powell, who died in 1989.
Friends will be recieved from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary, Riverside, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 9. Private burial will be in Riverside National Cemetery.

James C. Rocco
42-year Hunt-Wesson Foods employee was WWII vet
James C. Rocco, 81, of McMurray, died Monday, January 5, 2009, in his home.
He was born August 11, 1927, in Washington, a son of Patsy and Rachel Catarina Rocco.
Mr. Rocco graduated from Washington High School and Waynesburg College.
He served in the military during World War II and was employed by Hunt-Wesson Foods for 42 years.
Mr. Rocco lived for 55 years in Peters Township, where he served on township council and was former president of boys baseball. He was an avid fan of Peters Township sports, Duquesne basketball and the Steelers.
On September 19, 1953, he married Nancy Fox, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, James and wife Pamela Rocco; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Rocco.
Deceased are a grandson, Jimmy “J”; a brother, Anthony Rocco; and a sister, Mary George.

Esther K. Thompson
Longtime Washington Senior Citizens Center volunteer
Esther K. Thompson, 95, of Washington, died Monday, January 5, 2009, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.
She was born September 23, 1913, in Tunnelton, W.Va., a daughter of Jefferson D. and Icie May McGee Kisner.
Mrs. Thompson worked at Duncan Miller until the plant’s closing. In addition to having worked at Kress Box and Metro Glass, she had worked as a waitress at the Arms Club, Washington Hotel and Lea Ann’s Tea Room.
Mrs. Thompson was a member of West Washington United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 12 years. She volunteered at Washington Senior Citizens Center for 25 years, and at Washington Hospital for four years.
Her husband, James B. Thompson, died in 1976.
Surviving are four sons, Bryan (Ann) Thompson of Biloxi, Miss., and Jerald (Norma) Thompson, Ronald W. (Mona) Thompson and Richard C. Thompson, all of Washington; a daughter, Elaine C. (Richard) Ross of Washington; 18 grandchildren, Bryan Thompson Jr., Cathy Abernathy, Tresa Thompson, Timothy Thompson, Patrick Thompson, Mary Thompson, Lisa Radvinsky, David Thompson, Judy Swan, Michele Timco, Ronald L. Thompson, Tracy Warden, Barry Ross, Darlene Skerbetz, Brad Ross, Michael Thompson, Robert Thompson and Matthew Thompson; and many great-great grandchildren.
Deceased, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Naomi, who died at two weeks of age; and several half brothers and half sisters.

Elizabeth A. Weishner
Longtime member of St. Patrick Church
Elizabeth A. Weishner, 84, of Canonsburg, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 6, 2009.
She was born December 1, 1924, in Canonsburg, a daughter of Steven and Ann Rubik Worcholak.
During World War II, Mrs. Weishner worked at Continental Can Co. on Neville Island.
Mrs. Weishner was a longtime member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg.
She enjoyed bowling and loved all sports. She also loved flower gardening and was an avid reader.
For many years, she was a substitute teacher at St. Patrick School in Canonsburg.
On February 16, 1947, in St. Patrick Church, she married Anthony S. Weishner Sr., who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Anthony S. Weishner Jr. of Canonsburg, David W. Weishner of Cecil and Mark Weishner of Canonsburg; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Gizelle of Canonsburg; a brother, Theodore Worcholak of Houston; four grandchildren, Timothy, Stephanie, Lisa and Jennifer; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased are four brothers, John, Mike, Harry and Alex Worcholak; and two sisters, Ann Chapel and Mary Keznevich.
Viewing will be held in private at the convenience of the family. All are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 8, in Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Muse, with the Rev. George DeVille as celebrant. Interment will be held in National Cemetery of the Aleghenies, Cecil Township. Arrangements are in the care of Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home, Canonsburg.
