WWII vet owned Bronks Family Shoe Store
Michael A. Elias, 85, of Trafford, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville.
He was born January 12, 1923, in Washington, a son of Abraham and Anna Moses Elias.
Mr. Elias was retired from Royer’s Department Store as a general manager for several stores, and he was owner and operator of the former Bronks Family Shoe Store in Irwin.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Forces.
Surviving are his children, Michael G. Elias (Chrissie) and Michelle Anne Elias, both of Level Green, Terry Hamburger (George) of Mt. Lebanon and Pamela Sue Elias of Bethel Park; eight grandchildren, George Michael, Lauren, Alaina, Marissa, Jaron, Michael, Billy and Brianna; and a great-grandson, Matthew.
In addition to his parents, deceased are a son, Marty A. Elias; two brothers, Nasime (Bill) and James Elias; and three sisters, Sarah Higginbotham, Mary Polasky and Lois Ann McBride.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in John M. Dobrinick Funeral Home Inc., 702 7th Street (Route 130), Trafford, 412-372-3111, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 12, with Pastor Dennis Gill officiating.
Interment will follow in Restland-Lincoln Memorial Park, Monroeville.

Western Center retiree
Mary Jane Ewing, 79, of Washington, died Friday, January 9, 2009, in Washington Hospital.
She was born March 31, 1929, in Washington County, a daughter of Ralph R. and Sadie R. McMillan Mull.
Mrs. Ewing retired from the former Western Center in Cecil Township, where she worked for more than 20 years.
On August 15, 1950, in Winchester, Va., she married Glenn L. Ewing, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Glenn L. Ewing Jr. (Cynthia) of Houston; two granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are three sisters, Dorothy L. Woodburn, Betty Marker and Shirley Meeks; and three brothers, James, Clifford and Charles Roland Mull.

Wilma Jean Fowler, 80, of Dunnellon, Fla., formerly of Waynesburg, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala, Fla.
She was born July 26, 1928, in Waynesburg, a daughter of Charles and Lois Johnsen Rogers.
Mrs. Fowler moved to Dunnellon in 1989 from St. Petersburg, Fla.
She was a member of Fist Baptist Church in Dunnellon and enjoyed decorating and entertaining.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Sam H. Fowler; a son, Samuel Hancock “Chip” Fowler II and wife Leslie of Largo, Fla.; two brothers, Charles and Richard Rogers of Ashland, Ohio; two sisters, Valeria Rogers of Waynesburg and Bernice Johnston of Mansfield, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
Deceased are brothers John, Fred, Paul, Bronce, Ralph and Robert; and a sister, Ruth Stewart.

John Norbert Gielarowski
Westinghouse elevator mechanic, Korean War vet
John N. Gielarowski, 77, of Cecil Township, died Saturday, January 10, 2009.
He was born October 27, 1931, a son of John and Sophia Gielarowski, formerly of Pittsburgh’s West End.
Mr. Gielarowski was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt as a sergeant master of arms. He was a member of American Legion Post 793.
He was an elevator mechanic employed by Westinghouse Elevator and Industrial Elevator and was a member of IUEC Local 6.
On September 12, 1953, he married wife Nancy, who survives. They spent 55 years of marriage together.
In addition to his wife, surviving are five children, Theodore “T.J.” and wife Joan “Rosey”, Linda Klos and husband Robert, Susan Ansell and husband Dave and twins John and wife Kathryn and James and wife Sandra; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Nation Funeral Home Inc., 220 East Lincoln Avenue, McDonald, PA 15057. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, in St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, McDonald. Interment will be private. Engineer for CSX Railroad
Michael P. Golobish, 53, of East Millsboro, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.
He was born July 30, 1955, in Brownsville, a son of the late Mike and Catherine Simon Golobish.
Mr. Golobish was employed as an engineer for CSX Railroad and was a member of the former St. James Roman Catholic Church in Maxwell.
Surviving are two children, Christopher Golobish of Hickory and Michelle Golobish of Alaska, and numerous aunts, uncles and other family.
Also surviving is his girlfriend, Tina.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m., the hour of services, Monday, January 12, in Skirpan Funeral Home, 135 Park Street, Brownsville, with the Rev. Stephen Bugay officiating. Private interment will be held for the family at a later date in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill.

Enjoyed baking, canning, worked on family farm
Norma Aldene Hainer, 93, of Washington, died Friday, January 9, 2009, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.
She was born November 27, 1915, in West Bethlehem Township, a daughter of Norman R. and Mary Theakston Hainer.
She attended West Bethlehem Township schools and worked on the family farm, having attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
She enjoyed baking, cooking, canning and working both indoors and outdoors, as well as caring for Lori Curry and Williard Curry, whom she thought of as her own.
Surviving are a sister, Nellie Grace Clayton of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her parents, are four brothers, Roy, Blaine, Raymond and Herschel Hainer; and a sister, Esther Doty Hainer.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Nichol Funeral Home, 1873 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, with the Rev. Peter D. Asplin officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Brethren Cemetery, Marianna.

Marie V. Durinzi Horwat
Active member of Center Presbyterian Church
Marie V. Durinzi Horwat, 81, of Perrysburg, Ohio, formerly of Canonsburg, passed away Friday, December 19, 2008, in Kingston Residence, Perrysburg.
She was born January 16, 1927, in Slovan, a daughter of Domenick and Anna Delfrate Durinzi.
Prior to marriage, she worked in her family’s businesses and received an associate’s degree in business studies. She worked for a variety of employers including Kaiser Aircraft, RCA and McGraw-Edison.
On February 10, 1954, she married Stephen C. Horwat, who died October 1, 1999.
For more than 40 years, Mrs. Horwat was a member of Center Presbyterian Church in McMurray, having served as a deacon and elder, and was active in choir and church organizations.
She also was a longtime member of Giant Oaks Garden Club as well as an active volunteer for many groups, including Canonsburg General Hospital.
Surviving are two sons, Michael (Jill) Horvat of Pittsburgh and Matthew (Shelly) Horvat of Perrysburg; grandchildren Eliza, Ella, Madeline, Domenick and Timothy Horvat; and sisters Violet (John) Ciambella, Katherine Zollars and Linda (George) Mocharko, along with several loving nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, is a brother, John A. Durinzi.
In honoring Mrs. Horwat’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 17, in Center Presbyterian Church, McMurray. WWII veteran was PennDOT retiree
Richard G. Lively, 81, of Waynesburg, died Friday, January 9, 2009, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.
He was born April 29, 1927, in Charleroi, a son of Chauncey C. and Grace King Lively.
Mr. Lively was a graduate of Waynesburg College.
During World War II, he served as a radar operator in the U.S. Navy.
On June 28, 1952, he married Dorothy Good, who died July 19, 2008.
Mr. Lively retired from PennDOT in Uniontown, where he worked as an assistant district construction engineer.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesburg and was one of the founders of Quarterback Club at Waynesburg Central High School.
Surviving are a daughter, Barb Hartlaub and husband Robert of Waynesburg; a son, Richard G. Lively Jr. and wife Patty of Easton; two granddaughters, Alissa Hartlaub of Charleston, S.C., and Lindsay Hartlaub of Charleston, W.Va.; a grandson, Tucker Hartlaub of Waynesburg; a sister, Grace Long of Pawley’s Island, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are three sisters, Virginia Lewis, Lenore Hill and Pat Lively; and three brothers, Robert Lively, Chauncey (Kay) Lively and John Lively.

Betty June Dantry Markovich, 81, of Muse, passed away Friday, January 9, 2009, surrounded by her loving family, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born June 6, 1927, in Muse, a daughter of Felix and Mabel Middlemass Dantry.
Mrs. Markovich lived her life in Muse and the last few years in Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.
She was considered to be the definition of the word “homemaker” and will best be remembered for her wonderful cooking, kindness toward others and love for her family. Everyone always was welcome in her home, and she always had room for one more.
Mrs. Markovich was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Christian Mothers and Women’s Auxiliary of Muse Volunteer Fire Department.
On July 27, 1946, she married Pete Markovich, who died July 22, 2002.
Surviving are two sons, Larry (JoAnne) of Cecil and Terry (Lynn) of Canonsburg; six grandchildren, Michelle (fiancé Bob Persin) Markovich, Renee (Mark) Pollack, Jason (Dianna) Markovich, Julie (Kerry) Vaughn, Melissa (Gene) Fetty and Steve Markovich; two great-grandchildren Elena and Mack Fetty; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Kids were her life and she set a fine example of true devotion to them all.
In addition to her husband, deceased are a sister, Gloria Karchella, and two brothers, Harry Dantry Sr. and Quinton Dantry.

Pearl N. “Dolly” Mounts, 91, of Washington, died at 9:16 a.m. Friday, January 9, 2009, in Washington Hospital, after a brief illness.
She was born January 7, 1918, in Washington, a daughter of Charles E. and Pearl Roche Noble.
Mrs. Mounts was a member of First Christian Church in Washington.
A graduate of Washington High School, she was a member of American Legion Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 Women’s Auxiliary and BPOE Elks Lodge 776 Women’s Auxiliary.
On November 7, 1941, she married R.C. Mounts, who died December 19, 2000.
Surviving are two sons, Richard C. “Butch” Mounts of Washington and David C. Mounts of Glenshaw.
Deceased are three brothers, Guy Noble, Donald Noble and Charles M. Noble; and four sisters, Gladys Stephenson, Gloria Namie, Meril Barlow and Dorothy Sillaman.
She was the last of her immediate family.

Joy G. Tarleton, 80, of Worthington, Ohio, passed away Friday, January 9, 2009, after a lengthy illness.
She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister. The family’s rock, her gifts to this world were many. There always was a friendly greeting, sometimes a song, for anyone she met. She has gone to be with the Lord and will be missed dearly.
Surviving are her husband, George O.; a sister, Johnnie (Clifford) Honeycutt; three daughters, Sandy (Richard) Van Horn, Nancy (Richard) Woods and Ginny Beth (Buddy) Stehmeyer; a son, George John (Darlene) Tarleton; and grandchildren Rich (Cari), Brad and Megan Woods, Justin Van Horn, Lindsay and Lance Tarleton and Emily and Bryan Stehmeyer.
She leaves many loving family members and friends.
Deceased are her mother, Arizona, and father, John; and a brother, Jerry Ray Arrington.

Gladys Marie Zombeck, 86, of North Fayette Township, died Saturday, January 10, 2009.
She was born May 8, 1922, in Smithton, a daughter of John P. and Martha Denny Yoho.
For more than 20 years, Mrs. Zombeck was a cook at Woodville State Hospital, from which she retired in 1985.
She was a member of Iron’s Memorial Church, McDonald, and McDonald Cecil Senior Ctizens Club.
On January 29, 1949, she married Henry C. Zombeck, who died November 3, 1985.
Surviving are two daughters, Martha D. McAdams and Gayle D. (Jim) Devere, both of Oakdale; a son, Robert H. Zombeck of Oakdale; two brothers, Ralph Daudet of North Royalton, Ohio, and Darryl Daudet of Manassas, Va.; a sister, Patricia Scott of McDonald; nine grandchildren, Marcie McAdams, Tami Holman, Kellie May, James, Amy and John Devere, Christine Calpin, Anita Marie Kinney and Robert H. Zombeck Jr.; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are two infant children, John Ralph Zombeck and Stephen Patterson Mark Bawolak; and a brother, Robert Yoho.
