WWII Army vet,
self-employed barber
Peter Novick, 89, of Brownsville (Centerville Borough), died Friday, August 15, 2008.
He was born March 20, 1919, in Creighton, a son of Harry and Rose Novick.
Mr. Novick was a 1937 graduate of Springdale High School and attended New Kensington School of Business.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Novick worked as a Social Security field manager at the Washington office for 10 years and had been a self-employed barber. He owned and operated Novick's Barber Shop in California for more than 50 years.
He enjoyed writing and had been an amateur boxer in his youth.
On June 20, 1940, he married Rose Fick, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Dr. Peter Novick and wife Carolyn of Santa Barbara, Calif.; three grandchildren, Todd Novick and wife Jeanine, Chad Novick and Alexy Novick; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Pauline Peckney and Mary Wasiloff, and seven brothers, John, George, Steve, Walter, Sam, Paul and James Novick.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, with Pastor Bob Ezatoff officiating. Interment will be in Deer Creek Cemetery, Harmer Township.

Herman D. Lippencott
Veteran was farmer
and construction worker
Herman D. Lippencott, 88, of Waynesburg, died Saturday, August 16, 2008, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.
He was born January 24, 1920, in Waynesburg, a son of Emmett and Tillie Gilbert Lippencott.
A life resident of the Waynesburg area, Mr. Lippencott was a retired construction worker and farmer. He had also worked as a blacksmith and groom. His hobbies were reading, gardening, quilting and making candy.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Engineers in the European Theater.
Surviving are a sister, Shirley Montblanc of Metairie, La., and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a sister, Dale Bedilion, and a brother, George Lippencott.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Behm Funeral Home, 182 West High Street, Waynesburg, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, with the Rev. Jim Cannon officiating. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township, with graveside military rites by American Legion Post 330, Veterans of Foreign Wars 4793 and Disabled American Veterans 123, all of Waynesburg.

Robert H. Rollison
Gateway Coal Co. retiree enjoyed sports
Robert H. Rollison, 64, of Clarksville, died Saturday, August 16, 2008, in his home.
He was born September 22, 1943, in Brownsville.
Mr. Rollison was a retired coal miner from Gateway Coal Co. He enjoyed sports.
On November 23, 1967, he married Wanday Petros, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Robert E. Rollison of Clarksville; two daughters, Brenda Brady and husband Bill of Thomasville and Barbara Smith and husband Todd of New Galilee; six grandchildren; and a brother, Earl Rollison and wife Irene of Pitt Gas.
Services will be private and under the direction of Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 1477 Jefferson Road, Jefferson.

Walter A. Benkowski
WWII vet, member of St. Francis of Assisi Church
Walter A. Benkowski, 86, of Finleyville, died Sunday, August 17, 2008, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.
He was born November 13, 1921, in Ambridge, a son of Vincent and Frances Flont Benkowski.
Mr. Benkowski was retired as an inspector with the former Fisher Body in West Mifflin.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, American Legion Post 613 and Loyal Order of Moose 172, all of Finleyville.
Surviving are his wife, Violet Thompson Benkowski; a son, Edward Benkowski and wife Laura of Delmar, Md.; a stepdaughter, Joanne Kerfonta of Finleyville; a sister, Stella Capp of Ambridge; three grandchildren, Terri, Jessica and Dan; and a great-grandson, Lucian.
Deceased are a stepson, David Velmer; a great-granddaughter, Allison; four brothers; and two sisters.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Kegel Funeral Home Inc., Tim P. Kegel, supervisor, 3560 Washington Avenue, Finleyville. Nick A. Ciappa Sr.
46-year coal miner
Nick A. Ciappa Sr., 90, of California, died peacefully Saturday, August 16, 2008, in Mon Valley Care Center.
He was born November 5, 1917, in Van Voorhis, a son of Enrico and Nunzia Antonucci Ciappa.
Mr. Ciappa was Catholic and a member of United Mine Workers of America, having worked as a coal miner for 46 years in Beth Energy Mine 60.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Hank "Sonny" and Mariolein Ciappa of Lincoln, Calif., and Nick Jr. and Linda Ciappa of Roscoe; three grandchildren, Carrie Ann Rangel and husband Eddie and Sean Ciappa, all of San Jose, Calif., and Hank and wife Wendy of Lincoln; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Della and husband Lewis Radomile of Van Voorhis and Helen Davis of Charleroi; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Rose S. Ciappa, who died in 1991, and a sister, Emma Bell.

Owned and operated Noochie's Grille, Canonsburg
James Scott "Noochie" Gregorakis, 46, of Canonsburg, died Saturday, August 16, 2008, in UPMC-Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a short illness.
He was born Thursday, May 24, 1962, in Canonsburg, a son of James "Gregy" Gregorakis of Canonsburg and the late Mary Lou Adams Gregorakis, who died November 1, 1984.
A 1980 graduate of Canon-McMillan High School, Mr. Gregorakis was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, AHEPA Chapter 156 and Pan Rhodian Society.
He was a self-employed business owner and owned and operated Noochie's Grille in Canonsburg since 2000.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are a son, James Gregorakis of Canonsburg; two daughters, Mary Lou Gregorakis of Canonsburg and Aubrey Gregorakis of Coral Gables, Fla.; a brother, George James Gregorakis of Canonsburg; two granddaughters, Isabella and Gabriella Silvestros; and several aunts and uncles.
Friends were received Sunday and will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday and 10 to 11 a.m., the time of services with Father George L. Livanos officiating, Tuesday, August 19, in All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 601 West McMurray Road, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg. Member of Hickory United Presbyterian Church
Ruth E. Clarke, 97, of Hickory, died Friday, August 15, 2008, in Canonsburg General Hospital.
She was born January 1, 1911, in Greene County, a daughter of Jesse and Electa Thompson Cox.
Mrs. Clarke was a 1929 graduate of Trinity High School and a member of Hickory United Presbyterian Church.
She had worked in the hospitality shop of Washington Hospital and did volunteer work at Washington County Health Center.
Her husband, Glenn T. Clarke, died October 9, 1974.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna Zimmerman of Canonsburg; a sister; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Marilyn Maskarinec, and a sister.

U.S. State Department employee
Helen K. Blair, 86, formerly of Dry Tavern, died Sunday, August 17, 2008, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, following a lengthy illness.
She was born April 7, 1922, in Edenborn, a daughter of Andrew and Anna M. Pavlo Begovich.
Mrs. Blair was a 1940 graduate of Jefferson High School and attended California State Teachers College and Youngstown University.
She worked for the U.S. State Department, with several years in the Foreign Service in England and Iran. She returned to Greene County in 1963.
She was Catholic.
Surviving are her sister-in-law, Angeline Begovich of Crucible; two nephews, F. Richard (Eileen) Begovich of Alexandria and Edward (Shirley) Begovich of Crucible; three great-nephews, Francis Richard Begovich, Paul Begovich and Edward Begovich Jr.; and a great-niece, Bernadette Begovich.
Deceased are two brothers, Edward J. Begovich and Frank Begovich.
She was married twice; both of her husbands are deceased.
