Leonard Wisner, 38, of Washington, underwent surgery at UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh following the shooting. A hospital spokeswoman, however, could not give details of his condition.
According to the Herald Star newspaper in Steubenville, Wisner was hunting with Don Myler, 34, on Myler’s property in Amsterdam, Ohio.
Myler was arrested on a felony weapons charge and a misdemeanor count of negligent hunting. A spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department said Myler had been convicted of aggravated arson in 2001 and was not permitted to possess a gun for the rest of his life.
Reports stated Myler was hunting with 10 other people Friday, and Wisner was flushing out a deer when Myler fired five rounds at the deer. One of the rounds apparently struck Wisner. In Ohio, hunters are permitted to only have three rounds in their gun.
The Ohio Division of Wildlife is investigating the incident.
