Chartiers-Houston’s John Popeck coasted into the WPIAL semifinals by finishing atop the leaderboard at the Division II, Section 4 qualifier with a five-under 66. The qualifier was held at Moon Golf Club.
Popeck’s nearest competition, South Side Beaver’s Justin Newbauer, shot a 75.
In the Division 1, Section 7 qualifier held at Lindenwood, Peters Township’s Mike Stenger took first with a 73.
Waynesburg’s Zach Schloemer shot a 70 to finish first in the Division II, Section 8 qualifier at Carmichaels Golf Club.
The top 12 in each section qualify for the semifinals.
Women’s tennis
California University won all four brackets at the ITA East Regional tournament at Bloomsburg. For the second straight year, Cal will send a singles player and a doubles team to the ITA national championships.
Helena VanEysendeyk, the top seed in the “A” singles tournament, defeated teammate Lisa Santoro, 6-1, 6-2, in the title match, and teamed up with Santoro to win the doubles bracket, 6-1, 6-4.
Nina Kowalski defeated teammate Elodie Briquet, 6-2, 6-4, to win the “B” singles bracket. Kowalski and Briquet won the doubles tournament by default.
The “A” bracket winners advance to the national championship tournament in October.
Men’s soccer
Defender Zach Williams scored the game’s only goal to lift Washington & Jefferson, 1-0 over Franciscan, in a non-section match.
Ryan McDonald placed a corner kick into the box and Williams headed the ball in shortly before halftime. The Presidents (3-5-1) have won two straight matches.
Women’s soccer
Goalkeeping ruled as Washington & Jefferson and Mt. Union played to a scoreless tie in a non-section match.
W&J goalkeeper Jackie Foltz made nine saves and Kaitlyn Mallernee made 10 for Mt. Union. The Presidents are 3-4-2.
Girls soccer
Shannon Guernsey scored three goals, but Kaitlyn Speer was the hero for Chartiers-Houston, scoring the overtime winner to lift the Bucs over Brentwood, 4-3, in a non-section match.
Speer’s goal, off an assist by Kacey Simpson, came less than four minutes into overtime. Katie Mazza assisted on each of Guernsey’s goals. Jessa Dermitt made 32 saves for the Bucs (4-7).
• East Allegheny’s Amanda Mikolay scored a controversial goal in overtime to lift the Wildcats over Bentworth, 3-2, in a non-section match.
On the overtime winner, the ball appeared to go out of bounds, but officials allowed play to continue and Mikolay, who had two goals, scored to end the match.
Nicole Borelle also scored for East Allegheny (2-8). Heather Podroskey and Samantha Ritzer scored for the Bearcats (3-6).
• Megan Hahn and Ali Forbrich had hat tricks for Peters Township in a 13-0 victory over Trinity in Section 5-AAA.
Danielle Castillo scored two goals and Mackenzie Creehan, Shelli Stamer, Rachael Thomas, Melissa Carbonara and Dana Aaron also scored. Carbonara and Maura Lacey had two assists each.
Megan Junker and Adrianna Carbonara were in goal as the Indians’ defense posted its seventh shutout. PT is 8-0, 11-0 and the Hillers are 1-7-0, 2-7-1.
Boys soccer
Zach Zuzek scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half, one on a free kick, to give Canon-McMillan a 2-1 win over Keystone Oaks.
Dan Hosko had given Keystone Oaks a 1-0 lead in the first half. The Big Macs are 4-7.
