Lucic-Jozak helps W&J knock out Westminster

Washington & Jefferson College's men's basketball team earned its first Presidents' Athletic Conference victory of the season and only its third overall with a 78-64 win over Westminster at Buzz Ridl Field House.

Washington & Jefferson (1-2, 3-10) took control of a close game in the second half. The Presidents, who trailed by as many as 11 points, 30-19, in the first half, rallied for a 20-5 run to take a 39-35 lead at halftime. The Presidents held off the Titans by outscoring the hosts 39-29 in the second half.

Josip Lucic-Jozak led Washington & Jefferson with 25 points and eight rebounds. Wahab Owolabi had 21 points, including nine in the key run late in the first half. Albert Varacallo chipped in with 11 points. The Presidents outrebounded Westminster, 37-26.

David Richards led Westminster with 22 points. Craig Hannon added 12 points with Ryne Murray and Chauncey Whitlow scoring 10 points each. Westminster made only six field goals in the second half, when they shot only 28.6 percent from the field.

Waynesburg 91, Thomas More 83: Waynesburg leaned heavily on its starting lineup to get the best of Thomas More.

Waynesburg's starters scored 75 points as the Yellow Jackets earned their first Presidents' Athletic Conference victory of the season with a 91-83 win at Marisa Fiedlhouse.

Thomas More (3-1, 6-6) led by five points at halftime, thanks to 50 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes, including 5-of-11 from three-point range.

But Waynesburg (1-2, 6-5) responded by shooting 53 percent in the second half. Waynesburg took control of the game with a 13-3 run in the second half.

Tim Drakeley led Waynesburg's balanced attack with a game-high 18 points. Josh Parisi and Jason Clark each scored 17 points for the Yellow Jackets and Dan Happe added 16. Reserve Jarell Rodriguez also chipped in 15 points. Parisi had 12 rebounds. Only seven players scored for Waynesburg.

Four players scored in double figures for Thomas More, led by Mark Tinklenberg's 17 points. Matty Owens had 15 points, Eddie Brown 13 and Daniel Ellis 12.

California 80, Mansfield 71: Ron Banks had career-highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead California to an 80-71 win over Mansfield in a PSAC crossover game.

California (8-2) never trailed and led by as many as 12 points. Mansfield (9-2) got within one point three times.

Theron Colao scored 15 points for the Vulcans, who held a commanding 39-22 edge in rebounds. James Hairston scored 13 points and Julian Logan 12.

Three Mansfield players scored in double figures, led by Chris Greene's 19 points. Chris Pender and John Hampton had 15 and 12, respectively.

Women's results

Washington & Jefferson 80, Westminster 49: Washington & Jefferson continued its strong start in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with an 80-49 win at Westminster.

The Presidents lead the PAC with a 3-0 record and are 9-2 overall.

Maggie Gibson led all scorers with 19 points for W&J. Maria Hillenbrand had 13 points and Jen Rogers came off the bench to provide a double-double: 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Gina Brunetti led Westminster (1-2, 7-3) with 11 points.

California 71, Mansfield 47: The Vulcans of California University had little problem with Mansfield, holding the host Mountaineers to only 16 first-half points en route to a 71-46 victory in a PSAC crossover game.

Brooque Williams led California (10-2) with 20 points. Kayla Smith had a double-double for the Vulcans: 17 points and 15 rebounds. Amber Dubyak also scored 11 points. The Vulcans have won seven in a row.

Jeannette Meacham and Alicia Espigh each scored 10 points for Mansfield (4-8).

California forced 34 turnovers and had 28 steals.

Thomas More 90, Waynesburg 34: Thomas More showed why it's ranked fifth in the USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division III poll as the Saints thumped Waynesburg 90-34 in a PAC game.

Thomas More (4-0, 11-0) was in control from the beginning and led 46-11 at halftime.

Tandrea Sellers led a dozen Thomas More scorers with 14 points. Sarah Yeiser added 13 points while Alex Gee and Jayme Thiem each scored 12 points.

Johnna Deco led Waynesburg (0-3, 1-10) with nine points.
