Williams scores 22 as Vulcans crush ESU

After a sluggish first half, California University found its scoring touch over the final 20 minutes, riding a second half surge to defeat East Stroudsburg, 84-50, in a PSAC crossover game at Hamer Hall Saturday.

Both teams shot under 32 percent in the first half, and the Vulcans (12-2) led 24-21 at halftime.

In the second half, California built the lead to 48-36 on the strength of 60 percent field-goal shooting. East Stroudsburg (5-8) narrowed the deficit to 50-44, but the Vulcans scored 18 of the next 20 points to put the game away.


Freshman Kayla Smith scored 16 of her 21 points in the second half while also grabbing eight rebounds.

Brooque Williams scored a game-high 22 points, Johnson had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Crystal Andrews had 14 points and Shaquetta Mance chipped in 10 points for the Vulcans.

Rayam and Mel Villano each scored 14 points for the Warriors, who committed 37 turnovers.

Thomas More 86, Washington & Jefferson 53: Nationally-ranked Thomas More showed Washington & Jefferson just why it is one of the top teams in the nation in Division III women's basketball.

The Saints connected on 16 three-pointers, five by Sarah Yeiser, and Thomas More went on to rout Washington & Jefferson 86-53 at Thomas More.

Ten Thomas More players made at least one three-pointer. Jayme Thiem also had 19 points and Jenna Kelsch scored 10 points for the Saints (6-0, 13-0).

Sarah Hunt led W&J (3-2, 9-4) with 16 points. Maggie Gibson had 14 points for the Presidents.

Geneva 60, Waynesburg 47: The tough times continue for the Waynesburg women's basketball team. The Jackets lost their 12th consecutive game Saturday, falling to Geneva 60-48 at Marisa Fieldhouse.

Neither team shot well in the game. Geneva (12-1) shot 43 percent from the field but made only six second-half field goals. Waynesburg, meanwhile, shot only 32 percent for the game.

Renee Rawding led Geneva with 21 points. Allyson Clarke added 14 points.

Elisha Jones led Waynesburg (1-12) with 17 points. She was 9-of-14 from the foul line and was the only Jackets' player to attempt a foul shot.

Men

Thomas More 65, Washington & Jefferson 59: Thomas More showed it could hit the three-point shot against Washington & Jefferson and that long-range shooting helped the Saints to victory.

Thomas More made nine three-pointers, including three each by Mark Tinklenberg and Jeremy Abell, and got past the Presidents 65-59 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference contest Saturday at Thomas More.

Romell Salone led Thomas More (3-3, 7-7) with 14 points while Tinklenberg finished with 13.

Josip Lucic-Josak led Washington & Jefferson (2-2, 5-7) with 16 points. Brian Felker added 14 in the loss.

Geneva 86, Waynesburg 72: It's been 18 years since longtime rivals Geneva and Waynesburg met on the basketball court.

Waynesburg could have waited a little longer as the Jackets fell to the Golden Tornadoes 86-72 at Marisa Fieldhouse. The game marked the 125th meeting in the series, the first since the 1989-90 season.

Geneva (8-6) had a strong first half and jumped out to a 41-29 lead by halftime. The Golden Tornadoes held off the Jackets in the second half by going 23-of-29 from the foul line.

Bryan Hill led Geneva with 31 points including six three-pointers. Greg McDivitt had 19 points and nine rebounds and Justin Nardi added 14 points for Geneva, which outrebounded Waynesburg 41-25.

Four Waynesburg (6-7) players scored in double figures, led by Josh Parisi's 19 points. Parisi also had a team-high seven rebounds.

Tim Drakeley finished with 16 points for the Jackets. Jason Clark had 13 and Jered Gamble added 11 in the loss.
