Presidents win another at Bethany

Nothing like heading into the Presidents' Athletic Conference on a roll.

Washington & Jefferson overcame a 16-point second-half deficit on the road and rallied to defeat conference champion Bethany, 73-70, Saturday at Morrow Field House.

The Presidents (8-4, 12-13), who have won five of their last six games, defeated the Bison for the second straight time at Bethany. It was the first time W&J has won at Bethany in 10 tries.


Bethany (9-3, 15-10) led 42-29 at halftime thanks in large part to Brody Jackson, who scored 19 of his game-high 29 points in the first 20 minutes.

Bethany increased its lead to 49-33 before W&J went on a 26-8 run over the next 12 minutes to lead 59-57 with 6:35 remaining.

The Bison led by two before Albert Varacallo hit a three-pointer to give the Presidents the lead with 2:14 remaining. After Jackson hit a jumper, Varacallo answered again with a jumper to give W&J a lead it would not relinquish.

Wahab Owolabi and Josip Lucic-Josak led W&J with 21 points each. Matt Drakeley finished with 11 points.

Tyler Morando added 15 points for the Bison and Petre Petkovski also scored 11 in the loss.

Washington & Jefferson will host Thiel in a first-round game of the PAC men's tournament Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Henry Memorial Center.

California 60, Indiana 47: California remained undefeated in PSAC West play after a 60-47 Saturday at Indiana.

Three California players scored in double figures, led by Alioune Mbaye's 20 points. James Hairston also had 12 points for the Vulcans and Ron Banks added 11 in the victory for the Vulcans (10-0, 21-4).

Darryl Webb scored a game-high 21 points for Indiana (4-6, 12-13). Sean Christiansen finished with 12 points in the loss.

California outshot, outrebounded and took care of the ball better than Indiana.

Women's results

California 71, Indiana 69: Shaquetta Mance scored a career-high 33 points to lead California to a 71-69 win at Indiana in a PSAC West contest at featuring the conference's top two teams.

The game was tied 69-69 when Mance was fouled with four seconds left. She made both foul shots to give Cal a two-point lead. Indiana's Kylie Miller missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.

Mance, who didn't start but played 36 minutes, was 12-of-18 from the field and 8-of-10 from the foul line. She also had six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Brooque Williams also scored 13 points for California (7-3, 20-5), who was outrebounded and shot worse than Indiana. However, the Vulcans forced 29 turnovers.

Miller led Indiana (8-2, 23-3) with 19 points. Kierstin Filla had 13 points, Jahzinga Miller 12 and Staci Heberling 11 points in the loss.

Washington & Jefferson 66, Bethany 50: Emily Hays had a double-double to lead Washington & Jefferson to a 66-50 win past Bethany in a PAC game at Morrow Field House.

The win gave the Presidents (11-3, 19-6) the No. 2 seed in the PAC Women's Tournament. Washington & Jefferson will host Thiel Tuesday at Henry Memorial Center at 6 p.m.

W&J held a slim 27-26 lead at halftime but took control of the game with a 13-2 run in the second half.

Hays finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jen Rogers came off the bench to score 14 points for the Presidents. Maggie Gibson and Kennan Killeen added 13 and 11 points respectively.

Kelly Goode led Bethany (10-4, 15-10) with 18 points and Tara Harris had 10.

Chatham 67, Waynesburg 55: A balanced scoring attack, along with a school-record 11 three-pointers, were the difference for Chatham in a 67-55 win over Waynesburg in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game Saturday at Chatham University.

Chatham (5-9, 10-15) had only one player score in double figures - Lizz King with 14 points including four three-pointers. But, 11 players scored for the Cougars, including six with seven or more points.

Elisha Jones led Waynesburg (0-14, 1-24) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Celina Gomez also scored 14 points in the loss.

Waynesburg, which shot better than Chatham and outrebounded the Cougars, also committed 29 turnovers in its school-record 24th consecutive loss.
