Waynesburg men, women eliminated

Despite a team-high 21 points from senior forward Josh Parisi, the Waynesburg University men's basketball team suffered an 88-73 loss to second-seeded Grove City Tuesday in the opening round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament.

Second-seeded Grove City will take on No. 3 Washington & Jefferson in a home game in the semifinals on Thursday.

The Wolverines (17-9) shot 58.5 percent, including 40.9 percent from three-point range. Shawn Carr led Grove City with 24 points, and Andy O'Keefe and Ryan Gibson each scored 10. Kris Verderber and Ryan Gerber came off the bench to score 11 and 10 points, respectively.


After trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, the No. 7 Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to 45-38 in the first minute of the second half on a three-pointer by senior guard Tim Drakeley. Grove City, however, responded with seven unanswered points and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Waynesburg (8-17), which was eliminated from the tournament, received 13 points from senior guard Jared Gamble and 12 from sophomore swingman Ryan Courneen. Parisi also added a team-high nine rebounds. Drakeley was limited to nine points after leading the conference in scoring at 21.8 points during the regular season.

Women's result:

Thomas More 61, Waynesburg 33: Top-seeded Thomas More College jumped out to a 35-18 halftime lead on visiting Waynesburg and eliminated the Yellow Jackets from the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament with a 61-33 victory in the first round.

Jayme Thiem led the Saints with 15 points, Alex Gee had 11 and Tandrea Sellers added 10.

Junior forward Michaelene Jones recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Jeanette Wonsettler, a Waynesburg High School graduate, added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets.
