The California University men's basketball team remained on a collision course with Edinboro and a showdown Wednesday night for first place in the PSAC's West Division.

California forged a big first-half lead Saturday night then held off a late charge by Indiana to defeat the Crimson Hawks, 60-47, at Hamer Hall.

The win was the fifth in a row for California (14-4 overall) and moved the Vulcans to 5-0 in the West. Edinboro also is 5-0 after beating Lock Haven. Edinboro plays at Cal on Wednesday.

"We're going to have to play much better Wednesday than we did tonight," said Cal coach Bill Brown. "Edinboro brings quickness and shot blockers, but it's like Dorothy said, there's no place like home."

Indiana (3-2, 11-9) played a bevy of zone defenses and they eventually confused and slowed down the Vulcans, but not until Cal had built a 21-point second-half lead. The Crimson Hawks managed to trim the deficit to 48-42 with five minutes left, but Cal got a three-pointer from guard Jesse Brooks with the shot clock running down and then secured the win by pounding the ball inside the IUP zone.

California low-post players Ron Banks and Ali Mbaye had big games. Banks had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Mbaye scored 12 points with six assists.

Theron Colao came off the bench to score 11 points for Cal and Julian Logan had 10.

Grove City 62, Washington & Jefferson 53: Washington & Jefferson led through most of the second half before Grove City closed with a 20-4 run to secure a 62-53 victory in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Grove City College Arena.

Josip Lucic-Jozak led W&J with 15 points. Ryan Gerber led the Wolverines (13-7, 6-2) with a game-high 17 points and Andy O'Keefe added 14 points.
