Waynesburg women, men fall in first round

BETHANY, W.Va. - Despite erasing a 10-point halftime deficit, the fifth-seeded Waynesburg College women's basketball team suffered a 65-61 defeat at the hands of fourth-seeded Bethany in the first round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday.
BETHANY, W.Va. - Despite erasing a 10-point halftime deficit, the fifth-seeded Waynesburg College women's basketball team suffered a 65-61 defeat at the hands of fourth-seeded Bethany in the first round of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday.

Waynesburg finishes the season with a 9-16 mark. Bethany, now 9-17, advances to Thursday's semifinal round to play either second-seeded Westminster or top-seeded Thomas More in Crestview Hills, Ky.

Bethany was paced by a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds from junior guard Lisa Mitchell, a graduate of Avella High School. Freshman guard Nicole Thompson added 14 points and six assists.

Senior guard Katie Lewandowski led Waynesburg with 13 points and five assists. Sophomore forward Michaelene Jones added 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Senior forward Denise Kennedy collected a team-high seven rebounds to go with eight points.

Waynesburg struggled from three-point range, making just 3 of 12 attempts (25 percent). Bethany managed to shoot 5-of-13 from three-point territory.

The Yellow Jackets collected 11 steals with three each from Jones and freshman guard Johnna Deco, a Chartiers-Houston graduate.



Men's results

Grove City 89, Waynesburg 60: After dropping both regular season games to Waynesburg, Grove City jumped out to a 45-33 halftime lead before rolling to a 29-point win against Waynesburg, 89-60, in the first round of the PAC Tournament.

The Wolverines used a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures, paced by senior forward Mark Smith, a graduate of Peters Township, with 14 points.

Grove City held a 43-17 rebounding advantage. Senior center Craig Hallman had a double-double for Grove City with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Four players scored in double digits, led by senior guard Beau Wilson with a game-high 15 points.
