Home-court advantage long overdue for W&J

The first sign for Presidents' Athletic Conference executive director Joe Onderko that something out of the ordinary was happening Saturday night at Washington & Jefferson College came when he drove his car onto campus.

He couldn't find a parking spot, which had never happened before on a weekend.

Onderko had driven from Crestview Hills, Ky., where he attended the PAC women's tournament final earlier in the day. He didn't arrive in Washington until shortly after the 7:30 p.m. tip-off of the men's championship game between W&J and Grove City.

Yet what really stunned Onderko was what he saw inside Henry Memorial Center. Seats were as hard to find in the lower bowl as parking spaces were outside the building.

"This is incredible," Onderko said while taking his seat at the scorer's table.

There were student sections for both schools. The W&J students wore black t-shirts and the Grove City group waved cardboard signs. They provided entertaining chants. They were loud. They were into every possession of Grove City's 60-58 victory.

In other words, it was a terrific college basketball atmosphere, something W&J hasn't had in at least 20 years.
