Westminster beats W&J at line Observer-Reporter CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - Coaches often say games are won or lost at the free-throw line. Never was that more true than in the Westminster-Washington & Jefferson women's PAC semifinal contest. The Presidents had a great night at the foul line, making 21 of 26 attempts. Yet the Titans managed to do better, sinking 26 of 27 free throws, a phenomenal 96 percent conversion rate. Westminster's total included making its final 16 free throws, two with eight seconds left in regulation, and the fourth-seeded Titans knocked off the second-seeded Presidents 82-77 in overtime Friday at Thomas More's Connor Convocation Center. It was the second year in a row Westminster defeated Washington & Jefferson in the semifinals at Thomas More (57-51). Kaitlin McCarthy, who had only four points in the game, made both her free throws with eight seconds remaining to tie the score at 69-69 for the Titans (17-10). Just seconds before, Kennan Killeen hit a jumper that put W&J ahead 69-67.
In the overtime session, Gina Brunetti's three-pointer put Westminster ahead 74-71, and the Titans went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe to hold off the Presidents (20-7). Emilee Ackerman had a tremendous game, scoring a game-high 36 points for Westminster. Ackerman, who became Westminster's all-time leading scorer, shot 9-of-17 from the floor and made all 16 of her free throws. She also grabbed nine rebounds. The game featured 12 ties, the last being 71-71 in overtime, and the lead changed hands eight times. The largest lead for either team was eight points.
Killeen finished with 20 points to lead the Presidents, who await word on a possible ECAC South Region Tournament berth. That bracket will be released Monday. Stephanie Smith scored 14 points and Emily Hays had 13 for Washington & Jefferson, which committed only nine turnovers but shot just 35 percent from the floor. Brunetti ended the game with 13 points, Terese Marszalek scored 12 and Amy Dolsak added 10 for the Titans.
