More gold for W&J's Orstein Observer-Reporter OXFORD, Ohio - Kaitlyn Orstein, a senior at Washington & Jefferson College, captured her sixth career NCAA Division III swimming championships with a record-breaking performance Thursday. Orstein won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.27 at Miami University's Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. Orstein broke her own national mark of 2:03.13 in the event by nearly three seconds. Orstein won last year's 200 IM title with the time of 2:03.13. This is the third time in Orstein's career that she won the Division III title in the 200 IM. She won the others in 2005 and 2007. "It was one of the most amazing swims I have ever seen," said W&J head coach Mike Orstein, who is Kaitlyn's father. "She represented Washington & Jefferson College, which made everything that much more special. Just an unbelievable performance."
This was Kaitlyn Orstein's sixth national title and she had to outduel last year's Division III Swimmer of the Year, senior Brittany Sasser of Amherst College. Sasser placed second in yesterday's 200 IM with a time of 2:01.27. Senior Meredith Nordbrock of Washington (Mo.) University finished third, with a time of 2:02.97. Orstein, a 12-time Division III All-American, will compete in the 100 breaststroke tonight and the 200 breaststroke Saturday night.
Orstein is the defending champion in the 200 breaststroke and will be looking for her first 100 breaststroke title. Orstein owns the Division III top time this year in the 100 breaststroke and the third-best mark in the 200 event.
