PT golfers ready to commit to college By Mike Kovak, Staff writer Seven players who have come through the Peters Township High School golf program are currently on college rosters. By next fall, the number will have grown to 11. Four PT golfers - two boys and two girls - will commit Wednesday at the Indians' indoor golf facility at Advanced Vision on McMurray Road. Division I, Section 7 champion Mike Stenger will sign with Potomac State College, one of the top junior college programs in the country. Jon Stewart, a WPIAL and PIAA finalist, will decide between Carnegie Mellon and the College of Wooster.
Lauren Hammell, also a basketball standout, was a WPIAL and PIAA finalist who will join the Allegheny College women's golf team and may try to walk-on for basketball. Pam Bonneau has selected Westminster College. Bonneau played in the WPIAL championships. "We're really putting them out right now. We're rolling," said David Kuhn, the Peters Township boys golf coach. "The key is to try and develop a golf program, not just a team. It takes a lot of work outside the season." And if the player chooses to stay in Western Pennsylvania during the offseason, it requires indoor training.
That's why Kuhn, with the help of the golf boosters and Dr. Lonny Harrison, started the indoor facility. It features a large putting green, chipping areas, three hitting areas, a full indoor simulator, and other amenities. "We looked at a couple other teams that have spaces," Kuhn said. "Baldwin and Bethel Park both have spaces. We kind of looked at those and asked how we could take it to the next level." The space created tremendous competition among the golfers. Last fall, the Peters Township boys team had a golfer with an average score of 39 who did not start. Miller to RMU Washington High School senior Sam Miller was among the 23-player recruiting class for the Robert Morris University football team. Miller, named to the Interstate Conference first-team as a defensive tackle, made more than 70 tackles during his senior year as the Prexies finished 6-3 but failed to qualify for the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.
A three-year starter in football, Miller also won more than 100 matches during his varsity wrestling career and was selected to the Observer-Reporter All-District Team. Doman tribute The Carmichaels School Board meets tonight at 7 p.m. and one topic of conversation will be retiring the jersey of former Mikes football standout Rocky Doman. On Dec. 3, 2007, Doman died at age 26 after a gas well explosion. During his playing career (1996-1999), Doman rushed for a school-record 4,145 yards and was named the Tri-County South Most Valuable Player as a senior. Those wishing to see Doman's No. 44 retired are urged to attend the meeting or sign an online petition at http://www.PetitionOnline.com/rockyd44/petition.html. Brandemarte to Waynesburg Roger Brandemarte, a multi-sport senior at Monessen, will continue his football career at Waynesburg University. A two-time All-Tri-County South Conference selection at placekicker, Brandemarte, who has a 3.65 GPA, made 79 extra points during three years at Monessen. He was also a three-year lettermen in golf and basketball, a two-time lettermen in basketball and baseball and he lettered as a freshman in soccer. |
