CANONSBURG - The ambiance of Southpointe was temporarily transformed Saturday night from well-manicured office park to Hollywood-glitzy as the movie "Shannon's Rainbow" was screened for the first time in the region.

It wasn't the finished version - an almost-complete cut of the film was shown at the Hilton Garden Inn to benefit the Marcus L. Ruscitto Charitable Foundation, which honors a onetime Peters Township resident and entrepreneur who died in 2004.

A large portion of "Shannon's Rainbow" was filmed in Washington County last summer. Some of the locations included The Meadows Racetrack & Casino in North Strabane Township and neighborhoods around it. The story of a girl who nurses an injured horse back to health, it stars, among others, Daryl Hannah, Steve Guttenberg and Eric Roberts.

Audience members paid up to $200 to attend the screening, where popcorn mixed with formal attire. It was a sell-out, with 300 tickets being sold, according to Jonathan Rosenson, a board member for the foundation.

Lights were set up outside the hotel, and a red carpet was rolled out inside. Among the celebrities present were Stephen Colletti from the CW series "One Tree Hill" and Jason Gedrick, who most recently had a role on ABC-TV's "Desperate Housewives." Both also appear in "Shannon's Rainbow."

John Mowod, who wrote the script along with KDKA-AM radio personality Larry Richert, said "Shannon's Rainbow" has already received some test screenings in Los Angeles, but they wanted also to use Saturday night's screening to gauge audience response.

"It's ready to go," Mowod said. No decision has been made about who will distribute the film, but that could happen this week, he added. A possible summer release is envisioned.

Among those attending Saturday night's screening were David and Cathy Johnson of Peters Township. Their home was used by the "Shannon's Rainbow" cast and crew for a couple of days last summer, and they were anxious to see their abode on the big screen.

"The whole experience was incredible," Cathy Johnson said. "We were sorry to see them go."
