U.S. attorney: Venetia man gets probation

A Ventia man has been sentenced in federal court to two years of probation for breaking into a post office box and cashing a check that did not belong to him.

Marvin Hillman, 51, of 1515 Sugar Run Road, Venetia, unlawfully entered a post office box of a contract employee with the U.S. Postal Service, removed her paycheck, cashed her check and retained some of the proceeds, according to a statement issued Wednesday by U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan.

Hillman allegedly broke into the box because the employee had missed work time and was not entitled to all the pay she had received, the release states.

The postal service assisted in the investigation leading to a conviction against Hillman for obstruction of mail.

Area woman featured on WQED program

A Washington County woman will be featured tonight in a new 30-minute WQED documentary "Stone Soldiers: Saving the Gettysburg Monuments."

Ellen Armstrong of West Middletown will read from letters she inherited from her great-great-uncle, David Acheson, who was killed on the battlefield.

Acheson's fellow soldiers carried his body to a tree line and buried it, marking the grave with a boulder. They carved the 22-year-old man's initials in the stone so his relatives would know where to find his remains.

The documentary puts a face on the monuments, many of which have been damaged by vandals, said David Solomon, the show's producer.

It airs at 8 p.m. and will be streamed live via the Internet. For information, visit www.wqed.org.
