College water polo Maggie Hannon scored a game-high five goals as Indiana cruised past Washington & Jefferson, 18-6, in women's action Sunday at Henry Memorial Center. The loss snapped W&J's four-match winning streak. Indiana evened its record at 13-13 and the Presidents dropped to 6-7.
College softball Catcher Hannah Schulz hit three home runs in the first game of a doubleheader and finished the day with eight RBI as Washington & Jefferson College swept Saint Vincent, 7-2 and 13-1, in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Schulz went 5-of-6 with four extra-base hits. She provided all the runs W&J (17-5) needed in the opener with a two-run homer in the first inning, a solo shot in the fifth and another two-run homer in the sixth. Rebecca Nachreiner won her 10th game of the year after holding the Lady Bearcats (14-6) to two runs on three hits while striking out eight. The Presidents scored eight runs in the third in the second game. Schulz and third baseman Melissa Metcalf, a Carmichaels graduate, both had two-run singles during the third inning, and Trinity product Kaitlyn Falleroni added a three-run double.
Pitcher Georgia Schumacher improved to 5-1, allowing one run on four hits in five innings. College baseball Washington & Jefferson split a non-conference doubleheader with Penn State-Altoon, losing 9-2 in the opener and winning the nightcap, 5-1. Pitchers Matthew McGrogan and Michael Duffy combined to limit W&J (13-7) to only three hits in the opener. Duffy was the winner for Lions (8-14) with 41/3 innings of scoreless relief. Catcher Sean Boone hit a two-run homer in the nightcap to power W&J, and Brett Ferlic picked up his first career win by tossing five shutout innings. n California earned its second split in as many days against PSAC West rival Slippery Rock, losing 7-6 in eight innings in the opener but winning the second game, 4-3.
Despite allowing only seven hits in 5.2 innings of work Corry Ryan earned a no-decision, as the Vulcans rallied in the bottom of both the sixth and seventh innings for five runs. California (15-10) had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh in the opener but failed to push across the tying run. The Rock's Scott Bender opened up the top of the eighth inning with a home run. In the nightcap, Cal's Randy Sturgill went the distance, allowing only four hits and four walks. He struck out six. The Vulcans scored three runs in the fourth inning. Koscheck signs deal Waynesburg High School graduate Josh Koscheck has signed a new contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship after his previous three-year deal with the mixed martial arts organization expired. Koscheck, a former four-time NCAA All-America wrestler at Edinboro, has become one of the organization's top welterweight (170 pounds) fighters. UFC also announced that Koscheck (12-2) will fight veteran Chris Lytle (35-35-4) July 5 in Las Vegas as part of the card for UFC 86. |
