Boys baseball

Fort Cherry's moved to Class AA took the Rangers out of Section 2-A but it didn't keep them from meeting rival Chartiers-Houston in a non-section game Monday.

This time, the Bucs got the better of the Rangers, 16-6, in six innings.

Jason Paris went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI for the Bucs (1-1). Winning pitcher Andy Petras also homered, while Mark Jones went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Zach Podrasky and Ryan Parker also doubled for Chartiers-Houston.

Dave Phillips hit a two-run home run for Fort Cherry (0-1), which opened up a 5-0 lead, in the first inning.

• Four guys drove in two runs apiece and Mapletown hit 11 singles during a 16-3 non-section victory over Trinity (W.Va.).

Winning pitcher Nick Popernack struck out two, walked two and doubled for the Maples (2-0). He combined on a one-hitter with Brandon Geisel.

Travis Corso also doubled for Mapletown.

• California opened a seven-run lead en route to a 9-4 non-section victory over neighboring rival Beth-Center.

Ben Carson pitched the third and fourth innings and picked up the victory for the Trojans (2-1). Carson also doubled, as did Dakota Conway. Losing pitcher Matt Sabatini had two of the three hits for the Bulldogs (0-2).

• Trinity got solid pitching from starter Alex Frey and reliever Copry Broggi struck out six in two innings as the Hillers picked up their first win, 11-3, in a non-section game.

Buck Gnagey drove in four for Trinity (1-2), while Sean McKnight hit two doubles during a 3-for-4 night. Frey also doubled.

• Jake Cramer cracked a two-run double in the top of the ninth to lead Belle Vernon to a n 8-6 victory over Carmichaels in a non-section game.

Cramer doubled in a run and scored in a two-run first for BV. Chuck Gasti had two doubles and Marcus Robinson hit one for the Mikes (2-1).

• James Stratico hit a game-winning double in the sixth to send Peters Township to a 3-2 victory over Shaler in a non-section game. Jordan Jankowski had two singles, including an RBI in a two-run first for PT (4-0).

Tom Logan doubled for Shaler (1-3).

• Southmoreland scored six runs in the top of the seventh on the way to an 11-2 victory over Waynesburg in a non-section game. Dave Hyde had a double and three RBI for Southmoreland. Jeremy Mains doubled and tripled.

Matt Fox had a double for Waynesburg (0-2).

Girls softball

Memry Jordan had three hits and Carmichaels took advantage of nine errors by Jefferson-Morgan during a 13-3 victory in Section 1-A.

Winning pitcher Kasey Osbourne struck out nine for the Mikes (2-0, 2-1). Morgan Pratt and Alysia Workman sparked the offense with one double each.

Emily Cottle struck out 11 for the Rockets (0-2, 0-2). Heather Herbert hit a triple and Julia Guthrie doubled.

• Charleroi had four hits but the Cougars scored 12 runs as it defeated rival Monessen, 12-2.

Jenna Rokosky tossed a three-hitter for Charleroi (2-1), which got one double each from Kelsey Stottlemyer and Jen Samoda. Hayley Halinka and Monique Minniti each doubled for the Greyhounds (0-2).

• Ashley Nichols struck out eight, walked none, allowed two hits and belted a two-run home run as Belle Vernon clubbed Laurel Highlands, 17-1, in a non-section game.

Apryl Patterson doubled and drove in four for the Leopards (1-2). Kristi Baxendell, Heather Sellew and Jessica Zites each doubled.

• Jaci Timko went 4-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBI and three runs scored as Chartiers-Houston blanked visiting Ringgold, 8-0, in a non-section game.

Timko also combined on a two-hitter with winning pitcher Kiersten Conwell.

Kristina Kowalsko added a triple and two RBI, while Brittany Jones tripled for the Bucs (4-1). Kaitlyn Rupprecht and Jackie Scott each doubled to help Ringgold drop to 0-2 overall.

College golf

Junior Tommy Rohanna shot a seven-over 79 to lead the Waynesburg University men's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the 11-team Titan Invitational, which was held at New Castle Country Club.

Carnegie Mellon won the team championship with a score of 300. Waynesburg finished at 332.

St. Vincent's Doug Mehall was the medalist after carding a one-under 71.
