Girls softball

Shaylee Ianno struck out 15 and tossed a two-hitter, while catcher Amanda Heitmeir played a key role in both Peters Toiwnship runs as the Indians scored a key early Section 4-AAAA victory over visiting Trinity, 2-0.

Heitmeir drew a second-inning walk, the only free pass allowed by Trinity pitcher Kristen Zelenka, then stole second and scored on a pair of bad defensive throws by the Hillers (0-1, 2-3).


In the fourth inning, Heitmeir drove in Julieanne Taylor with a single up the middle as Peters Township improved to 2-0 in section and 6-0 overall.

In two section games, Ianno has 35 strikeouts and no walks. Zelenka struck out nine and allowed just two hits.

n Lauren Minor tossed a no-hitte in Waynesburg's 1-0 victory over Elizabeth Forward in a Section 4-AAA game. Minor struck out eight and did not walk a batter against last year's WPIAL runner-up Warriors.

The only run came in the fourth when Alyson Johnson got on by an error, moved to second on a walk to Courtney Orndoff, went to third on a fielder's choice by Nikki Coleman, and scored on a groundout by Breanna Morris.

Emily Bosworth had a triple for Waynesburg (2-0, 2-0).

Kristin Hawkins struck out 10 for EF (1-1, 2-1).


n Jaci Timko homered twice and drove in three runs to lead Chartiers-Houston to a 5-0 victory over Fort Cherry in Section 1-A. Kristen Conwell struck out 13 for the Bucs (2-0, 5-1). Fort Cherry was playing its first game of the season.

n Emily Cottle tossed a two-hitter and recorded her 300th strikeout of her career in an 8-1 victory by Jefferson-Morgan over Geibel in Section 1-A.

Cottle struck out 12 Gators to mover her season mark to 31 and career number to 306.

Heather Herbert had a double and two RBI and Sara Stepp knocked in two. Ashley Phillips doubled for J-M (1-2, 1-2). Geibel fell to 0-2, including 0-1 in the section.

n Allison Kleinhans tossed a three-hit shutout as McGuffey stopped Ringgold 6-0 in a Section 4-AAA.

Sierra Spalding tripled for the Highlanders (2-0, 2-0). Ringgold fell to 0-3 overall, 0-2 in the section.

n Carmichaels scored three runs in the first inning and blanked Frazier, 4-0, in a five-inning game.

Kasey Osbourne pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out eight for Carmichaels (3-0, 3-1). Angie Kirchner was the losing pitcher for Frazier (1-2, 3-2).

Laci Ludrosky doubled and Ashley Chernisky had two hits for the Mikes.

n Bethanie Kern pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 for Avella in an 11-1, five-inning win over Monessen in Section 1-A.

Marissa Midler's two-run double in the first was all Avella (2-0, 2-0) needed on offensive. Rachel Fiorentini had two RBI for the Eagles.

Monessen dropped to 0-3, 0-2 in the section.

n Alexis Lopez and Jenna Phillips each homered as Washington opened play in Section 5-AA with a resounding 14-0 win at Brownsville in six innings.

Lopez drove in four runs for the Prexies (1-0, 4-2), who got a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts from Ashley Sadler.

Chelsea Evans and Liz Bombara each tripled, and Larissa Bistarkey, Jordan Jackson. Meghan Warner and Diray Jolly each doubled off Brownsville (2-1, 4-1) pitcher Stacy Knox.

n Brynne Bashioum struck out 12, allowed three hits and hit a double as Bentworth defeated California, 1-0, in Section 1-A.

Lindsay Bostich belted a home run for the Bearcats (1-1, 3-1). Shelby Dziak went 3-for-4, and Nicole Hudak hit two doubles and Toni Gibson added one.

Liz Shaw struck out eight for the Trojans (0-1, 0-2).

n Katie Tuttle went 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Chelsea Jones came a home run short of the cycle and scored three times during West Greene's 15-5 win at Mapletown in a Section 2-A game.

Samantha Milliken added a triple for the Pioneers (1-1, 1-1). Winning pitcher Rachel Burns struck out nine and walked one.

Heather Shook had three hits for the Maples (1-1, 1-2) and Christa Grim doubled.

Baseball

Cody Waters led a 13-hit attack with two solo home runs as Burgettstown dropped Chartiers-Houston 12-6 in a non-section game.

Nick Tasz, Bryan Vallina and Zach Bertolotti each cracked two doubles for the Blue Devils (1-0). Winning pitcher Tyler Lonchar had one double.

Andy Petras smacked a two-run home run and Jason Paris hit two doubles for Chartiers-Houston (1-2).

n Winning pitcher Justin Falcon doubled and tripled as Jefferson-Morgan topped Waynesburg, 11-3, in a non-section game.

Falcon picked up the win in relief of starter Mike Mox. Dave Montibeller also doubled for J-M (3-0).

Kenny Schoen doubled for Waynesburg (0-3).

n Chris Khouri, who had three hits, including a double, stole home in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Avella over Carlynton, 7-6, in a non-section game.

Winning pitcher Cole Heckman also doubled for Avella (1-1). Drew Curry tripled, and Ryan Lappele doubled for Carylynton (0-2).

n Trinity pounded out 14 hits in a 13-3, six-inning win over Elizabeth Forward in Section 4-AAA.

Five different Trinity players - Joe Haverlak, Sean McKnight, Evan Bukowski, Preston Linck and Graham Cowieson - had two hits apiece. Haverlak drove in four runs for the Hillers (1-0, 2-2) and Bukowski and Kazmiercak had two RBI.

Tyler Schrader pitched a complete game and struck out 10. Elizabeth Forward dropped to 1-3, including 1-2 in the section.

Summey new Bethany basketball coach

Mike Summey was named men's basketball coach at Bethany College Tuesday. He is the 24th head coach at the school.

He takes over for Aaron Huffman, a Waynesburg High School graduate, who resigned in March after six seasons.

Summey was an assistant coach at the University of North Florida, which moved up to Division I two years ago. Prior to his time at North Florida, the Hickory, N.C., native was an assistant coach at The Citadel, Queens (N.C.) College and Saint Francis (Pa.).

College softball

Washington & Jefferson College's softball team split a doubleheader against Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Brooks Park.

W&J junior pitcher Rebecca Nachreiner fired a two-hit shutout in Game 1 as the Presidents earned a 4-0 victory.

The Wolverines (1-1, 2-10) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth in Game 2 to record a 4-3 victory and notch their first PAC win of the year. Grove City snapped a seven-game losing streak to W&J with the victory.

Nachreiner allowed only four base runners - two on hits, two on walks - in her second shutout of the season. She struck out four.

Ally Stasik, Hanna Schulz and junior first baseman Valerie Schultz, a McGuffey graduate, each had two hits for W&J (3-1, 15-5).

W&J took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 when freshman second baseman Katelynn Falleroni, a Trinity graduate, singled and scored on a base hit by senior catcher Hannah Schulz.

W&J held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth in Game 2, but the Wolverines scored three runs with two outs to assume a 4-2 advantage.

College baseball

Senior Drew Aniceti hit a grand slam and California University pulled off a triple play in a 13-4 victory over West Liberty.

Chris Novia had three of Cal's 18 hits and senior Andrew Rafalski pitched a complete game.

Lacrosse

Jenn Doran scored five goals to lead Peters Township to a 13-7 victory over Mt. Lebanon in a girls lacrosse match in Section 3.

Morgan Murray added four goals, Sam Schwartz scored two and Ally Oleynik and Kelly McGrail each added one for the Indians (1-0, 2-0).
