Sam Gaudio's two-run home run in the top of the seventh ignited a five-run rally for Upper St. Clair as it defeated Peters Township, 5-3, Wednesday in a Section 3-AAAA game.
It marked the second setback in as many days for the Indians (2-2, 6-2).
Gaudio also doubled for the Panthers (1-2, 6-2), who did not score until the final inning.

n Avella's Chris Khouri came within one out of a no-hitter as the Eagles blanked visiting Cornell, 8-0, in Section 2-A.
Khouri, who struck out 10 and walked three, took a no-hitter into the top of the seventh when Cornell (1-3, 2-5) got a groundball single up the middle with two outs.
Khouri and Ethan Fernbaugh each had two hits for Avella (3-0, 4-1). The Eagles made the most of only five hits but Cornell issued eight walks.
n Thomas Jefferson scored seven runs in the top of the seventh innings to rally for a 16-12 victory at McGuffey in Section 4-AAA.
Jack Shaffer drove in four for the Jaguars (3-1, 5-3) and Dean Langholz belted a three-run home run in the sixth. Thomas Jefferson scored 12 runs over the final two innings.
Scott Grandon had four RBI for the Highlanders (1-3, 2-3), who got three RBI each from Matt Czulewicz and John Lucsko. Luke Baker hit a solo home run in the seventh.
n An Eric Landman home run helped visiting Brownsville knock off Washington, 7-5, in Section 2-AA.
The Falcons (2-1, 4-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Prexies (2-1, 2-2) scored three runs in the fifth to close within 5-4. Losing pitcher Mike Damerow hit two doubles for Washington and Julien Anderson added one double.
n Charleroi scored 10 runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a tied game and give the Cougars a 14-6 win at Waynesburg in a Section 2-AA game.
The Raiders (0-3, 0-6) went through three pitcher in the seventh inning as Cory Titchnell took the loss. Garrett Henry homered for Waynesburg and reliever Chad Pappasergi struck out seven in picking up the win for Charleroi (2-1, 3-2).
n Winning pitcher Billy Musgrove belted a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning as Carmichaels remained unbeaten in Section 1-A with a 5-1 victory at Bentworth.
Musgrove pitched five inning and combined on a four-hitter with Marcus Robinson as the Mikes moved to 3-0 in section and 5-1 overall.
Dalton Bercosky and Ty Bell combined on a five-hitter for the Bearcats (1-2, 2-2). Isaiah Manfredi doubled.
n Jefferson-Morgan ran its season-opening win streak to six as the visiting Rockets defeated Mapletown, 15-0, in five innings in Section 1-A.
Justin Falcon hit a three-run homer run for J-M (3-0, 6-0) and Noah Pust also homered. Scott Bogdan doubled twice and David Montibeller pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts.
Mapletown (1-2, 2-3) made five errors.
n Mark Jones went 2-for-3 with a double and five RBI as Chartiers-Houston defeated Clairton, 9-2, in a Section 2-A game.
Matt Paris pitched a complete game with five strikeouts for the win. Zach Podrasky added a double for the Bucs (3-0, 4-2). Neil Bishop tripled and Tom Alderson doubled for the Bears (1-2 section).
n Tyler Lonchar pitched six strong innings and Nick Tasz doubled twice as Burgettstown topped Beth-Center, 10-1, in a Section 2-AA game.
Brenden Bongiorni, Sean Tunno and Anthony Tagliaferro also doubled for Burgettstown (2-0, 3-0).
C.J. McCarty, Shane Maxon and Matt Bodnar had two hits each for Beth-Center (2-2, 2-4).
College baseball
California concluded a three-game sweep of Ohio Valley by winning a pair of games Wednesday, 6-5 and 4-3, at Consol Energy Park.
California (18-10) defeated the Fighting Scots (7-25) on Tuesday night, 3-1.
Winning pitcher Ryan Heemann went five innings, allowing only four hits and one earned run in the opener. Robert Hedrick earned his third save. Sam DiMatteo hit his team-leading fifth home run and Hedrick also homered.
In the second game, the Vulcans again received good pitching, this time from Sean Welsh, who went six innings, allowing only four hits and striking out four. John Sklarsky pitched the seventh inning for his third save.
n Washington & Jefferson and Thiel combined for 68 hits, 54 runs and 11 homers during a PAC doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park.
The Presidents won the first game 19-6 but Thiel bounced back and earned a split with a 21-8 triumph in the nightcap. Twenty-five had at least one hit in the doubleheader.
W&J sophomore first baseman Frank Quirin homered three times on the day, and Thiel's Ryan Oldfield hit two homers in the second game and had eight RBI.
W&J (2-2, 14-8) scored at least one run in each of the first five innings in the opener, including a seven-run fifth which put the game out of reach.
Thiel (4-4, 13-9) used a nine-run third inning to win the second game. Oldfield hit a grand slam for the Tomcats.
n Visiting Waynesburg swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Bethany, 12-3 and 13-6. The Yellow Jackets had 20 hits in each game, including solo home runs by Chartiers-Houston graduate Dan Novak and McGuffey product Ryan Group in the opener.
Waynesburg (3-5, 13-14) overcame a 3-0 deficit in the opener. Zac Rhoades, also from McGuffey, was the winning pitcher in the opener and improved his record to 4-2.
Wes White went 5-for-6 with three RBI for Waynebsurg in the second game.
Bethany's records are 0-4, 5-16 overall.
High school softball
Heather Pulver went 5-for-5 with one double and four RBI as Burgettstown beat South Fayette, 10-5, Wednesday in a slugfest where the two Section 2-AA teams combined for 29 hits.
Jordyn Charlier and Jessie Faloon each added four hits for the Blue Devils (3-1, 3-1) and they combined for three RBI. Rikki Jo Revay also doubled and Chloe Rommes was the winning pitcher.
Becky Seiner doubled twice for the Lions (2-3 section).
n Casey Key hit a two-run home run in the third inning to help Washington rebound from a loss to Beth-Center with a resounding 14-0 win over Charleroi in Section 2-AA.
Hannah Cohen, Jessica Ketter and Larissa Bistarkey each doubled for the Prexies (3-1, 6-3) as Ashley Sadler pitched a two-hitter. Charleroi fell to 0-5 in section and 2-5 overall.
n Belle Vernon scored once in the bottom of the first on an Alana Lacey sacrifice and pitcher Ashley Nichols made it stick as the surpging Leopards defeated West Mifflin, 1-0, in Section 4-AAA.
Nichols pitched a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts and one walk. Apryl Patterson added a double for Belle Vernon (4-1, 5-2).
West Mifflin's Tara Simm allowed four hits.
College softball
McGuffey graduate Valerie Schultz had six hits, scored five runs and drove in four to lead Washington & Jefferson's sweep of Chatham, 9-0 and 9-1, on Wednesday at Varsity Field.
The sweep improved W&J to 5-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and 19-5 overall. The Presidents have won 14 of their last 16 games.
Schultz went 3-for-3 and drove in three in the opener. Winning pitcher Rebecca Nachreiner fired five scoreless innings and struck out six.
Chatham grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game, but the Presidents took charge with four runs in the bottom of the first.
Schultz had three more hits and scored three runs, and Amanda Howard was 3-for-3. Winning pitcher Georgia Schumacher gave up four hits and struck out six.
Cal spring football
California University's month-long spring football drills will conclude Saturday with the 29th annual alumni scrimmage. The alumni/varsity scrimmage will be played 1:30 p.m. at Hepner-Bailey Field at Adamson Stadium.
Steelers' mascot actor accused of DUI
One of the men who dresses as the Pittsburgh Steelers' mascot has been charged with drunken driving.
Team spokesman Dave Lockett says 24-year-old Kenneth Hahey of Pittsburgh will no longer play Steely McBeam.
Pittsburgh police say Hahey was charged after running a red light Jan. 6. Police say Hahey's blood-alcohol level was more than twice the state's legal limit for driving.
A hearing is scheduled for May 23 to determine whether Hahey can enter a program for first-time, nonviolent offenders.
Correction
The Washington & Jefferson College women's swimming team won its eighth Presidents' Athletic Conference championship under head coach Mike Orstein earlier this year. The total was incorrect in Wednesday's edition.
