Boys tennis

Peters Township's Doug Subostis made it to the semifinals of the WPIAL Class AAA Boys Singles Tennis Championships Thursday and has a chance to qualify for the PIAA tournament today.

Subostis defeated Penn-Trafford's Matt Hudak 1-0 in the first round and Butler's Matt Slamecka 10-8 in the quarterfinals before falling to Jay Jones of Upper St. Clair 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Subostis will play Upper St. Clair's Ethan Kallick in the consolation match with the winner headed to the PIAA Tournament.

Peters Township's Andrew Nixon won his first-round match against Franklin Regional's Osman Khwaja, 10-2, before losing in the second round to top-seed Casey Watt of Pine-Richland, 10-3.

In Class AA, Fort Cherry's Cameron Carlock lost in the first round to Daniel Goldblum of Winchester Thurston 10-1.

Scholastic softball

Bethany Kern tossed a two-hit shutout as Avella knocked off Chartiers-Houston, 1-0, in a Section 1-A game.

Kern struck out nine and walked two for the Eagles (6-3, 6-3). The only run of the game came in the fifth inning when Kern walked and was replaced with pinch-runner Natalie Glaum. Rachel Fiorentini put a bunt down but everyone was safe on an error. Amanda Temple drove in Glaum with a single.

Kiersten Conwell also struck out nine and walked two for Chartiers-Houston (7-2, 10-3), which has lost two of three.

n California won its first game of the season, 18-8, over Monessen in Section 1-A. Chrissy Pankratz had three hits, scored four runs and knocked in four for the Trojans (1-6, 1-7).

Liz Doman doubled and scored four runs and winning pitcher Ashley Toia had two triples and two RBI.

n Olivia Vovalina's RBI-double in the bottom of the eighth gave Peters Township a 6-5 win over Bethel Park in a section 4-AAAAcontest.

Stephanie Lusk singled in the eighth before Vovalina doubled her homef or Peters Township (6-2, 10-2).

Vovalina was also the winning pitcher as she pitched the last four innings and did not allow a run. She struck out seven and walked two.

Lindsay Hoover also had a double and Alicia Johns a triple for Peters Township. Bethel Park dropped to 3-4 in the section, 3-6 overall.

n Fort Cherry broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth inning and hung on for a 2-1 win at Bentworth in a Section 1-A contest.

Kaitlin Hoop was the winning pitcher for Fort Cherry (6-2, 6-2). She struck out five and walked two. Brynne Bashioum struck out 11 and walked two but was the losing pitcher for Bentworth (4-4, 7-4).

Fort Cherry had only four hits while Bentworth, which scored its run in the bottom of the seventh, had two.

n Geri Whitman tossed a one-hitter and struck out 17 batters for Beth-Center in a 4-0 win over Brownsville in Section 2-AA.

Jessica Schinkovec was the offensive catalyst for Beth-Center (5-1, 7-2), though she didn't have a hit. Schinkovec scored Beth-Center's first two runs, thanks to three stolen bases and three errors by Brownsville (3-4, 5-5).

Tyffini Balog had a two-run single in the sixth for the Bulldogs.

n Waynesburg scored six runs in two different innings and routed McGuffey, 16-1, in five innings in a Section 4-AAA game.

Emily Bosworth and Molly Henderson each had three hits and four RBI for Waynesburg (7-1, 7-1). Henderson had a double for the Raiders. Kaylie Barger, Alyson Johnson and Rachel Rohanna each tripled in the win.

Lauren Minor pitched a one-hitter for Waynesburg. She struck out eight and walked three. Allison Kleinhans was the losing pitcher for McGuffey (4-4, 4-4). She struck out two and walked two.

n Chelsea Evans blasted a home run and a triple, and Liz Bombara homered and doubled to help Washington defeat Charleroi, 18-0, in a three-inning Section 2-AA game.

Larissa Bistarkey doubled twice for the Prexies (8-1, 10-3). Tiara Bistarkey, Jessica Ketter, Becky LoPosta and Jenna Phillips each added one double and Ashley Sadler picked up the win.

Charleroi is 0-8 in section, 2-8 overall.

n Rachel Burns scattered seven hits and drove in two runs as West Greene beat Jefferson-Morgan, 7-4, in Section 2-A.

Mary Devenney and Angela Devenney added two RBI apiece for the Pioneers (7-1, 7-1). Chelsey Jones and Sarah Burns each doubled.

Ashley Phillips tripled and Marissa Cameron doubled for the Rockets (2-7, 3-8).

Scholastic baseball

Scott Bogdan's two-run triple broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning and spurred Jefferson-Morgan on to a 6-2 non-section win over Clay-Battelle, W.Va.

Dave Montibeller had a good day on the mound and at the plate. He was the winning pitcher, striking out 12 in six innings for Jefferson-Morgan (9-1). Montibeller had two hits and scored a run for the Rockets. Ryan Edwards doubled for J-M.

John Russell had a solo home run for Clay-Battelle and Dale Hockenberry doubled. Dave Burnett was the losing pitcher. He struck out four and walked five.

n Zack Wolfe and Ethan Virgili combined for six of Carmichaels 17 hits as the Mikes defeated West Greene, 11-2, in Section 1-A.

Virgili went 3-for-3 and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. Wolfe went 3-for-4. Phil Zack belted a home run for the first-place Mikes (7-0, 9-1). Anthonie Farrar doubled twice, and Joby Lapkowicz and winning pitcher Chuck Gasti added one double apiece.

Marcus Robinson had a team-high three RBI.

West Greene is 0-6 in section, 2-7 overall.

n A four-run eighth inning gave Mapletown a 12-10 victory at Avella in a non-section game.

Travis Corso's double was the lone extra-base hit for the Maples (4-6), but Brandon Geisel had three hits and drove in four.

Ethan Fernbaugh and Chris Khouri each homered for the Eagles (6-2). Fernbaugh drove in three and Matt Spencer added a double.

n Anthony Tagliaferro hit a home run and drove in three as Burgettstown defeated Weir (W.Va.), 8-6, in a non-section game.

Brenden Borngiorni had three hits, including two doubles, for the Blue Devils (6-1). Bryan Pavan and Nick Tasz hit one double apiece. Cody Waters pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.

Pat Duke homered for Weir (8-8).

Lacrosse

Jenn Doran had six goals and two assists to lead Peters Township to a 15-5 win over Baldwin in a Section 3 match.

Jules Femiani added three goals for the Indians (4-0, 6-2). Laura Sunday had two goals and two assists. Ally Oleynik had a goal and two assists and Laura Quinn, Lauren Ray and Jules Makrinos each added a goal.

Alexa Walnoha and Corey Sam combined to make eight saves in net for Peters Township.

PSAC weekly award

Helena VanEysendeyk, a sophomore from Maythet, France and member of California University's women's tennis team, was named the PSAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week.

PAC tennis

Freshman Steve Bold of Waynesburg was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week after posting an 8-0 record as the Yellow Jackets won four-straight matches. Bold is tied for team lead with a 7-4 singles record.

College lacrosse

Kaitlin Barrer scored five goals and assisted on two others to help Oberlin College post a 15-7 women's lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson College.

Courtney Schrock led the Presidents' scoring output with four goals, while junior Laura Peery pitched in with two goals and one assist.

n Three different Fighting Scots collected hat tricks as the College of Wooster recorded a 12-6 men's lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.

Chris Vogel, Jackson Doyle and senior midfielder Tim Huckestein each contributed two goals for the Presidents.
