Lucky night for Vulcans

For John Luckhardt, 13 was a lucky number at Saturday night's Tri-County Athletic Directors Coach of the Year Banquet.

Luckhardt earned his 13th award, winning the College Men Coach of the Year award. Luckhardt guided California University's football team to the PSAC West title and the NCAA Division II semifinals.

California's football team is this year's Observer-Reporter Headliner.

Other winners included Monessen's Andy Pacak, Football Coach of the Year; Peters Township's Dennis Squeglia, Girls Basketball Coach of the Year; Bentworth's Bob Kennedy, Boys Basketball Coach of the Year; Burgettstown's Terry Havelka, Wrestling Coach of the Year; and California University's Darcie Vincent, College Women Coach of the Year.

Greg Bazzoli of Canonsburg was named the Meghan Canterna Memorial Award winner as Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.

Lou Pradetto of Burgettstown was given the Roy Gillespie Memorial Special Award and George Linck, athletic director at Bentworth High School, was presented the Tri-County Athletic Directors Award.

Four student-athletes - Fort Cherry's Courtney Foltz, Geibel's Mia White, Carmichaels' Ethan Virgili, and Brownsville's Craig Novak were the Tri-County Athletic Directors' Scholarship winners.

Chartiers-Houston's softball coach Tricia Alderson, Peters Township boys soccer coach Bobby Dyer, Peters Township baseball coach Joe Maize, Belle Vernon softball coach Tom Rodriguez and Avella rifle coach Virginia Williams were awarded Olympic Sports plaques.

Special Recognition awards went to Natalie Abel, Andrew Sweat and Mike Yancich of Trinity; Annie Barry of South Fayette; Kellie Bartman of Ringgold; Christina Chukwuedo of Monessen; Dan Conley of Burgettstown; Emily Correal, Mackenzie Creehan, Emily Palko, Shane Pruitt, Pat Russo and Julie Stroyne of Peters Township; Mike Czerwien and Robert Heller of Waynesburg University; Jenna Ezarik and Jon Kennedy of Bentworth; Breehana Jacobs and Kaleb Ramsey of Laurel Highlands; Tim McCutcheon of California University; Kaitlyn Orstein and Bobby Swallow of Washington & Jefferson College; Rachel Rohanna of Waynesburg High School; Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State University; Jeff Weiss of Slippery Rock University; and Donte Valentino of California High School.
