Fire victim dies

An East Washington resident injured Sunday morning by a fire that swept thorugh his Jefferson Village apartment has died.
The Allegheny County medical examiner's office and local police and fire officials who are investigating the death of Roy Speck Jr. expected to have more information later today.
Speck, who was in his 50s, was a patient in UPMC-Mercy Hospital being treated for burns over 90 percent of his body and a compression fracture of his back. He fell from a rescue ladder.
Speck's father, Roy Speck Sr., had left the apartment at about 7:15 a.m. to go grocery shopping. When he returned about a half hour later, the apartment a off East Wheeling Street near Christman Avenue was ablaze.

The elder Speck was the long-time groundskeeper for the Washington High School stadium, and as part of his job, the family lived in the fieldhouse.
