Local briefs Scholastic baseball Eric Poland went 3-for-3 with two doubles, drove in five runs and threw a four-hitter as Washington defeated Burgettstown, 11-1 in Section 2-AA. Joey Ward also doubled for the Prexies (7-1, 7-3). Ward was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Nick Tasz homered for the Blue Devils (4-3, 7-3). n Alex Kazmeirczak had a two-run double that sparked a four-run fifth inning in Trinity's 4-2 win over Elizabeth Forward in Section 4-AAA. Evan Bukowski struck out seven for THS (7-1, 9-4). n Beth-Center scored four runs over the final three innings and earned a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Mapletown in a non-section game.
Shane Maxon drove in two runs in the top of the sixth inning with a double and Jeff Tarley gave the Bulldogs (5-6) an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. E.J. McCarty and Mike Bodnar also had doubles for B-C and John Cherup was the winning pitcher. Chris Drew doubled for the Maples (5-8).
n Carmichaels beat non-section opponent Waynesburg, 13-1 in five innings, by scoring five runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Joby Lapkowicz hit a three-run walkoff home run in the fifth. He finished with four RBI. Marcus Robinson doubled with three RBI. Winning pitcher Chuck Gasti had a triple with two RBI. Billy Musgrove also knocked in two runs for the Mikes (12-1). The Raiders are (2-10). n Mike Bodnar and E.J. McCarty doubled as Beth-Center defeated Mapletown, 4-2, in a non-section game. Reliever John Cherup picked up the win for Beth-Center5-6, which scored two runs in the top of the seventh. Chris Drew doubled for Mapletown (5-8). Scholastic softball Jordan Jackson drove in both runs to assure Washington a 2-0 victory over South Fayette in Section 2-AA. Jackson smacked a solo home run in the third and had an RBI-single in the first.
Ashley Sadler tossed a two-hitter and struck out six for Washington (10-1, 13-3). n Kristen Zelenka tossed a five-inning, no-hitter in Trinity's 12-0 victory over Upper St. Clair in Section 4-AAAA. Nicole Phillips hit a bases-loaded double that drove in three and Chelsea McWreath doubled for the Hillers (7-2, 9-4). n Chartiers-Houston had back-to-back no-hitters in a doubleheader against Monessen, winning both games by 15-0 scores. In Game 1, Kierten Conwell struck out eight and Jaci Timko had a solo home run. Chalese Wilson and Bethany Romano each had a double. In Game 2, Timko struck out seven and Devon Strimel added a double. Jackie Scott knocked in three runs for the Bucs (10-2, 14-3). Monessen fell to 0-12, including 0-11 in the section. n Geri Whitman tossed her fourth no-hitter of the season in a 14-0 victory over Charleroi in Section 2-AA. Whitman struck out 19 and did not walk a batter. Whitman also hit a grand slam in an eight-run seventh. Jessica Schinkovec doubled and homered and Ashley Meifert doubled for B-C (8-2, 10-3). n Shayleigh Busti cracked a three-run home run to help Carmichaels take a 6-1 win from Jefferson-Morgan in Section 1-A. Morgan Pratt doubled for the Mikes and Kasey Osbourne picked up the win. Sara Stepp had an RBI-single for the Rockets. n First-place Waynesburg maintained its one-game lead in Section 4-AAA with a 5-0 defeat of Ringgold. The Raiders (10-1, 10-1) play second-place Elizabeth Forward on back-to-back days next week. Lauren Minor threw a one-hitter, striking out seven. Rachel Rohanna had an RBI-double and Breanna Morris hit a solo home run. The Rams (4-8, 4-10) have lost three straight. n Fort Cherry swept a doubleheader from Section 1-A opponent California, 5-2 and 12-0 in five innings. In the first game, Lyndsie Delprato struck out 12 and walked just three to get the win. Lindsay Relihan and Harley Davidson each doubled and Kaitlin Hoop tripled with two RBI for the Rangers (10-2, 11-2). Ashley Toia doubled for the Trojans (2-9, 2-10). In the second game, Relihan pitched and allowed just one hit with 14 strikeouts. She also had three hits. Hoop, Relihan and Delprato each doubled and Davidson had a triple. Hoop had two RBI. n Brynne Bashioum allowed just two hits and struck out 10 as Bentworth earned a key, 11-1 five-inning victory over Avella in Section 1-A girls softball action. Brittany Kurowski had three hits and two RBI for the Bearcats (6-6, 9-6), who kept their playoff hopes alive with the win. Christy Kern took the loss for Avella (6-5, 7-5). n Belle Vernon scored four runs in the top of the seventh to pull away from McGuffey, 6-3, in a Section 4-AAA game. Jessica Zits and Heather Sellew doubled to back the pitching of Ashley Nichols for Belle Vernon (7-5, 9-6). Karlie Shriver tripled for McGuffey (5-7, 6-8), while Allison Kleinhans took the loss. n Rachel Burns scattered five hits as West Green topped Fairmont, W.Va., 9-4, at the Cee-Bee Tournament in Morgantown. Burns struck out six and allowed two walks, while Katie Tuttle doubled for the Pioneers (10-1). Brandon Lesko was the losing pitcher. Scholastic lacrosse Jenn Doran scored eight goals, while Lauren Ray added four, as Peters Township defeated Quaker Valley, 17-9, in a non-section high school girls lacrosse match. Ally Oleynik added a pair of goals, while Laura Sunday, Jules Semiani and Becca Elderkin added one each for PT (8-2). Alexa Walnoha hd 19 saves in goal for the Indians. College baseball Washington & Jefferson senior leftfielder Ryan Gregg had three extra-base hits, including a three-run homer in Game 2, to lead a doubleheader sweep of Mount Union at Ross Memorial Park. W&J (20-12) won Game 1, 3-2, and then added a 4-2 triumph in the nightcap. The Presidents have won 20 games for the fifth consecutive season. College lacrosse The Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team ended its first NCAA Division III varsity season with a 16-3 win over Waynesburg at Alexandre Stadium. Freshman Courtney Schrock scored six goals to lead W&J. Early receives honor Liz Earley, a senior thrower on the Allegheny College track team and Venetia resident, has been named North Coast Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week for her performances at the Elite IUP Open. Earley, a Peters Township graduate, set a school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 177 feet. The throw broke Earley's own school mark set in 2007 and also met the NCAA Division III automatic qualifying standard. |
