Hughes replaces Hughes at West Greene

Curt Hughes was hired as varsity head wrestling coach at the West Greene School Board meeting Thursday night. Hughes will replace his brother, Allen, who resigned last month.

Gary Whyte will be the assistant wrestling coach.

Curt Hughes resigned from his previous position of junior high football coach, so the district will look for his replacement.

Allen Hughes retired following 33 years of coaching in the program, the final 18 as head coach. He had a record of 216-94.

College softball



Waynesburg and Thomas More split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. Waynesburg won the first game 1-0 but Thomas More took the second 4-3.

In Game 1, Autumn Minor struck out 10 and walked one and Krysten Klueg scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Yellow Jackets (6-5, 16-17).

In Game 2, Thomas More rallied from a 3-0 deficit by scoring one in the fourth and three in fifth. Losing pitcher Amanda Baughman doubled in a run and scored one. Haley Kramer had an RBI-double and Minor drove in a run with a single. Kaycee Bischoff doubled and drove in two runs for Thomas More (10-4, 18-16).

n California University earned a split in its doubleheader against Indiana. But the one win got the Vulcans into the PSAC West playoffs. California lost the first game, 6-2, but routed IUP in the second, 6-0.

In Game 1, IUP had 11 hits to back Erin Holloway's four-hit pitching. Kayleigh Braim sparked Cal's offense in Game 2 with three singles and Maria Greco struck out 10. Cal is 25-12, 11-7 in the PSAC.

College baseball

California University split a doubleheader with Indiana, losing the first, 18-2, but winning the second, 7-3, in PSAC West action.

In Game 1, IUP took advantage of five California errors and pummeled Vulcans' pitching for 12 hits. Robert Hedrick homered for Cal. In Game 2, Robert Hedrick had three hits and Jeremy Potter and Ryan Yost each hit a home run.

Pony baseball

Winning pitcher Dylan Pounds hit a two-run home run to help C-H VFW Post 191 to a 15-0, four-inning victory over Cecil Township in Greater Route 50 Pony action. Casey Dunkle added a solo shot and Kyle McLaughlin and Larry Law each had a double. VFW is 2-0 and Cecil Township fell to 0-2.

n Chambers Insurance edged Ace Sporting Goods, 14-13, in an eight-inning Washington Pony League game. Ian Iuliucci had two triples, and Rikwon Moore two doubles for Chambers (2-1). Derek Allinder, Tyler Roy and Montana Logar each had a double.

Alex Lisenby and Josh Wise each hit a double for Ace (2-1).

Lacrosse

Morgan Murray scored four goals and Jenn Doran added three more to lead Peters Township to a 14-5 victory over Fox Chapel in high school lacrosse action.

Lauren Ray and Jules Femiani each added two goals and Laura Sunday, Janel Carey and Ellie Hanlon each added one for PT (9-2).

Scholastic baseball

Mike Damerow hit a game-winning, RBI-single in the bottom of the 10th inning as Washington topped Bentworth 4-3 in a Section 2-AA game.

Shaun Preston hit Washington's first home run of the season, a solo shot with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning that kept Wash High's hope alive. Julian Anderson also doubled for WHS (8-3, 7-1).

n Tarran Senay homered and double to help South Park cruise past Ringgold 10-5 in a non-section game. Doug Smith and Nick Garofalo each had a double for the Eagles. Drew Guarino and Tom Brletich each had a double for the Rams (4-10).

n Ty Wehner scored the game's only run in the third inning on a passed ball as Thomas Jefferson edged Trinity, 1-0, in a key Section 4-AAA boys baseball game.

TJ (7-2, 9-4) managed just two hits and two walks against Trinity's Tyler Schrader, who struck out six, but made that run stand up by leaving two Hillers on base to end three innings.

Trinity falls to 7-2 in section play and 9-5 overall.

n Zack Glasso, Chris Boyle and Brennon Daugunkis doubled as Seton LaSalle remained unbeaten with an 8-3 non-section win over Fort Cherry.

Nick Russell pitched five strong innings for the Rangers against Seton LaSalle (12-0), but took the loss.

Zack Crowley doubled for the Rangers (0-11).

Scholastic softball

Washington clinched a playoff spot with a 4-0 win over Beth-Center in a Section 2-AA high school girls softball game.

Larissa Bistarkey drove in two runs with a double for the Prexies (11-1, 14-3), while Ashley Sadler fired a two-hitter to get the win.

Gerri Whitman took the loss for Beth-Center (8-3, 10-4) despite striking out 12.

n Amanda Heitmeier had three hits, including a double, as Peters Township slugged its way to a 12-5 win over Keystone Oaks in a non-section game.

Kelsey Cunningham added a triple, while Morgan Meadows doubled, for PT (12-3). Olivia Bovalina earned the win.

Keystone Oaks falls to 12-3.

n Gina Dadolato tossed a four-hitter and struck out seven to lead Mt. Lebanon to a 2-0 victory over Ringgold in a non-section game. Karry Smith was the hard-luck loser for the Rams, striking out three and walking one.

n Travis VanOlst had two triples and drove in four runs to send California to a 15-0, four-inning victory over Mapletown in a Section 1-A game. Winning pitcher Matt Hartman doubled and drove in two runs for Cal (7-6-1, 4-5). Brandon Rossi and Ben Carson each drove in two runs.

Mapletown fell to 5-8 overall, 2-7 in the section.

n Liberty scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat West Greene 6-5 in the Cee-Bee Bash Tournament.

The Pioneers had their 11-game winning streak ended.

Mary Burns had a double and drove in two runs for West Greene (11-2). Katie Tuttle doubled.

Anastasia Jones and Savanah Trent each had a double for Liberty (15-8), a Class AA school located near Clarksburg, W.Va. Stephanie Stout had a triple.
