Girls softball

Chloe Rommes scattered four hits and Burgettstown scored all its runs in the fourth inning as it picked up a key 4-1 win over Beth-Center in Section 2-AA.

Rommes struck out six for the Blue Devils (7-6, 8-6), while Jessie Faloon and Heather Pulver each doubled. Pulver and Liz Smith drove in two rune apiece.

Geri Whitman struck out 14 and hit two batters for the Bulldogs (8-4, 10-5), who have lost three of four.

• Freshmen Alexa Zeremenko and Amanda Dino provided key hits as Canon-McMillan defeated Upper St. Clair, 8-2, in Section 4-AAAA.



Zeremenko delivered a three-run double in the first inning and Dino smacked two doubles for the Big Macs (2-7, 2-9). Erica Taylor pitched a two-hitter and walked none.

Selina Pantelli also doubled for C-M. The Panthers are 2-8 in section.

• Avella swept a Section 1-A doubleheader from Monessen by scores of 10-0 and 17-3. Both games ended early due to the 10-run rule.

In the first game, Avella's Bethanie Kern pitched a six-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Mandy Bertovich and Amanda Temple each doubled.

In the nightcap, the Eagles (8-5, 9-5) took advantage of eight errors by the Greyhounds.

• West Greene scored nine times in the seventh inning to close out Mapletown, 20-8, in a Section 2-A game.

The Pioneers (10-1, 14-2) had four extra base hits. Chelsey Jones, Rachel Burns and Angela Devenny doubled and Samantha Milliken had a triple. Rachel Burns, the winning pitcher, and Sarah Burns each had four RBI and Mary Burns drove in three runs.

For the Maples (5-4, 5-6), Wendy Dickerson doubled. Heather Shook and Kaitlyn Novak each tripled and had three RBI.

• Waynesburg moved two games clear of Elizabeth Forward for first place in Section 4-AAA after defeating the Warriors, 5-3.

The Raiders (11-1, 11-1) have three section games left, including one more with the Warriors (9-3, 10-4).

Waynesburg led 1-0 then scored four times in the sixth inning. Emily Bosworth doubled twice and Nikki Coleman had an RBI-triple. Breanna Morris went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Lauren Minor struck out 10 to earn the win.

Meaghann Jobb hit a three-run triple and losing pitcher Kristen Hawkins doubled for EF.

High school baseball

Bentworth scored in each inning and defeated West Greene, 17-7 in five innings, in a Section 1-A game.

Jason Jansante, the winning pitcher, doubled, as did Derrick Carroll and Nick Jones for the Bearcats (6-4, 7-5).

Wesley Wright homered and Levi Durbin doubled for the Pioneers (0-10, 2-11).

• Avella pounded out eight extra base hits and defeated Monessen, 12-6 in Section 2-A.

Chris Khouri went 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI, winning pitcher Ethan Fernbaugh had two doubles and two RBI and Jimmy Bracken doubled twice. Sam Beton had three hits and drove in three runs and Cole Heckman had a triple and two RBI for the Eagles (8-3, 9-5).

Joe Janosik and Mike Pica doubled for the Greyhounds (3-8, 3-12).

• Peters Township held off a late rally to defeat visiting Baldwin, 8-5 in Section 3-AAAA.

The Indians (6-5, 11-5) scored in each inning but the third. Pete Ross, Jordan Jankowski and James Stratico each had two hits and a double. Jim Rider and Nick Merich both homered and Will McClure had two hits. Jankowski knocked in two runs.

Stratico earned the win.

C.J. Laplace doubled and Anthony FInocchi homered for the Highlanders (0-11, 0-14), who scored twice in the seventh inning.

• Brian Parker doubled and hit a pair of solo home runs to power Chartiers-Houston to a 12-3 victory over Cornell in a Section 2-A game.

Winning pitcher Andy Petras also hit a solo home run. Derek McIlvaine and Sage Greco each had a double for C-H (11-0, 12-2), which needs a win or an Avella loss to clinch the section title.

Pitt promotes Herrion

Pitt men's basketball coach Jamie Dixon announced the promotion of Tom Herrion to associate head men's basketball coach on Tuesday.

Herrion joined the Pitt staff as an assistant coach last May and he helped the Panthers to a 27-10 record and the 2008 Big East Tournament championship.

"Over the past year, Tom has proved to be an outstanding and valuable addition to our staff," Dixon said. "Tom is a well-rounded coach and has helped us in recruiting, scouting and player development."

Prior to Pitt, Herrion worked as head coach at the College of Charleston, where he compiled an 80-38 record during his four years.

Meadows telecasts to be cut

HorseRacing TV, which broadcasts The Meadows harness racing, announced it will stop televising the races Thursday.

Among the reasons cited by HRTV was the racetrack's switch to afternoon racing. The Meadows was in competition with more premium tracks that race in the afternoon.

HRTV has gained access to high-profile tracks such as Churchill Downs and Aqueduct.

College baseball

The first four batters in Washington & Jefferson's order accounted for nine hits and eight RBI as the Presidents grabbed a 10-6 baseball victory from Penn State-Behrend at Behrend Field.

The Presidents improved to 21-14 overall, while the Lions dropped to 28-9.

W&J scored five runs in the third inning to take control of the game. Senior centerfielder Justin Benson singled home the first run, and sophomore third baseman Jim Pasquine brought home the second round after reaching on a fielder's choice.

Freshman shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz followed with a RBI single and sophomore leftfielder Frank Quirin delivered a two-run triple to close the five-run outburst.

Griffey at benefit

The Ken Griffey Sr. Foundation will hold the first Joseph l. Perrotta Memorial Celebrity Golf Outing Saturday, July 19 at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

Celebrities expected to attend include Ken Griffey Sr., former Cincinnati Reds outfielder George Foster, forer Cincinnati Bengals' running back Peter Johnson, former Pirates reliever Kent Tekulve and for Steelers receiver Louis Lipps.

Lacrosse

Jenn Doran scored eight goals to lead Peters Township to a 17-5 victory over Bethel Park in Section 3. Laura Sunday, Kelly McGrail and Jules Femiani each scored three goals for PT (6-0, 10-2).
