College softball

Washington & Jefferson College junior catcher Hannah Schulz was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Softball Hitter of the Week Monday.

Schulz led the Presidents (9-6, 2-0) to a doubleheader sweeo of Chatham with six hits in seven at-bats. She hit a grand slam, scored five runs and had seven RBI.

On the year, Schulz is batting .351 with two home runs and 14 RBI.

n California's Brianna Smith hit a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game and the Vulcans went on to a PSAC West doubleheader sweep of Slippery Rock at Lilly Field.

Cal (6-10, 3-3) won by scores of 3-2 and 7-5.

Katie Francart allowed two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts in the opener. Smith hit a solo home run in the nightcap.

College baseball

Sophomore Ian Poole and senior Sam Mann each turned in spectacular pitching performance as No. 16 Washington & Jefferson swept a PAC doubleheader from Westminster at Ross Memorial Park.

The Presidents (14-4, 5-0) won by scored of 4-1 and 2-0.

Poole tossed a three-hit shutout and he faced the minimum through the four innings to improve his collegiate record to 10-0.

In the opener, Mann scattered eight hits and struck out six.

• Jeremy Potter's game-winning single down the rightfield line in the bottom of the 10th inning gave California a PSAC West doubleheader sweep against Clarion at Falconi Field.

Cal (16-9, 4-2) won by scored of 8-3 and 6-5.

The Vulcans jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opener, helped by Dustin Woodring, who went 2-for-4 with three runs. Chris Novia capped the win with a two-run double.

In the second game, Cal was down to its last strike in ninth inning before a throwing error allowed the tying run to score.

Girls softball

Junior Larissa Bistarkey doubled and drove in three runs as Washington defeated visiting South Fayette, 7-4, in a Section 2-AA contest.

Winning pitcher Amanda Baughman struck out seven and doubled for the undefeated Prexies (3-0, 7-0). Alexis Lopez tripled and Meghan Warner doubled.

Lakayla Desmet pitched for South Fayette (2-3, 3-4), which lost to Washington, 8-0, six days earlier.

• Mapletown needed just five innings to defeat Turkeyfoot (W.Va.), 17-3.

Brittany Buckhalter, Heather Shook and Keitlyn Novak all had three hits for the Maples (3-3). Buckhalter doubled with three RBI, Shook had two RBI and a double and Novak scored three runs. Christa Grim and Erika Chory also doubled.

Baseball

Zach Edminston's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted California to a 6-4 victory over McKeesport and preserved the Trojans' undefeated record.

Edminston knocked in the tying and go-ahead runs with his one-out hit. California (8-0) added another run in the sixth.

Ben Carson and Waugh Carter also doubled for the Trojans and Matt Hartman earned the win in relief.

Jacobson to Waynesburg

Trinity High School senior Chad Jacobson will continue his academic and football careers at Waynesburg College.

Jacobson, a 5-9, 225-pound fullback, was the lead blocker for Ben Jennings and Troy Garove the last two years. He was first-team All-Big Seven Conference selection.
