Girls lacrosse

Jenn Doran scored five goals and Paige McMenamin added three goals and four assists to lead Peters Township to a 14-8 win over Mt. Lebanon in a Section 3 match.

Kelly McGrail had a hat trick while Lauren Ray, Laura Sunday and Morgan Murray each scored a goal for the Indians (8-1). Goalie Alexa Walnoha made 10 saves.

California improved to 24-11 by sweping a doubleheader with Wheeling Jesuit by scores of 9-4 and 5-1.

The Vulcans, ranked No. 3 in the NCBWA North Atlantic Region, have won 13 of their last 15 games.

• Washington & Jefferson pounded out 18 hits, including four home runs, as the Presidents rolled to a 16-1 Presidents Athletic Conference win over Westminster.

Nick Fiorilli, Sam Mann, Chris Varacallo and Matt Starmack homered for the Presidents (8-1, 18-5). Mann had three hits, scored three runs and drove in three, while Varacallo also had three hits.

John Astfalk (4-1) earned the win for the Presidents going five innings with no runs, two hits, two walk and three strikeouts.

Westminster falls to 3-9 in the PAC and 9-13 overall.

Palone out of hospital

Dave Palone, who suffered a serious leg injury during a race at The Meadows last week, was released from the hospital Tuesday.

Palone, 45, who ranks third on harness racing's career-wins list, required surgery at Allegheny General Hospital to repair multiple fractures to his right femur, a procedure that included the insertion of a rod and pins.

Players honored

California University sophomore Heather Bihler was named PSAC West softball Athlete of the Week after helping the Vulcans win five of eight games with a .480 batting average last week.

Bihler, a Trinity High School graduate, was 12-for-25 with five runs scored, six RBI, two walks and two doubles. Bihler is fourth on the team with a .319 average. The Vulcans are 6-6 in the PSAC West and 9-13 overall.

• California junior Lisa Santoro was named PSAC West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after posting a pair of victories in Saturday's 7-0 win at Georgetown.

Santoro claimed an 8-4 pro-set decision at No. 2 singles and paired with Helena VanEysendeyk for an 8-1 win over the Hoyas' No. 2 doubles team. Santoro is 25-2 in singles play and has combined with VanEysendeyk for a 12-1 doubles mark for the Vulcans (23-1).

• Jeff Weiss, a McGuffey graduate, was named PSAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week after finishing fifth overall and first among non-NCAA Division I competitors in the 5,000-meter run at the Bucknell Bison Classic.

Weiss' school-record time of 14:09.97 is the fastest to date in the PSAC.
