First Love celebrates first graduate By Christie Campbell Staff writer chriscam@observer-reporter.com A local Christian high school will reach a milestone this month when its first student graduates. The First Love Christian Academy also is relocating to a school building in Washington. The Christian high school will be housed in Fifth Ward School, 357 E. Maiden St., Monday. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the school at 8 a.m. that day with Washington County Commissioner Diana L. Irey presiding. An anonymous donor has agreed to pay the rent for the building for a year, said Kathleen Klein, who is serving as the academy's administrator.
The school will be on the building's second floor, and Klein said there is room to expand. Currently, the school has been operating out of the Fountain of Life Church at 2101 Old National Pike. Lydia Powers is the school's first graduate. She is graduating with honors. Of her, Klein said, "She has set the bar where we want the school to be. We're really proud of her."
The daughter of Paul and Brenda Powers, Lydia will graduate May 29. Commencement and dinner will be held at the George Washington that evening. First Love accepted its first student in the fall of 2005. Today there are eight students who attend classes there. Klein said she feels that by relocating to a larger setting the school can begin to recruit additional students. The school will be hiring three full-time people for the fall, including two teachers and an administrator. The school has a varsity lacrosse team and offers club soccer.
