Softball

Waynesburg clinched the Section 4-AAA championship Thursday, easily defeating West Mifflin, 11-2. Waynesburg's section and overall record is 12-1.

Alyson Johnson had a big day for Waynesburg. She doubled, homered and had four RBI. Breanna Morris went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI. Emily Bosworth and Courtney Orndoff each had two hits and an RBI for Waynesburg.

Lauren Minor was the winning pitcher for Waynesburg. Tara Simm was the losing pitcher for West Mifflin (0-12, 1-13).

• Heather Sellew had three hits and two RBI to lead Belle Vernon past Ringgold, 10-0, in a five-inning Section 4-AAA game.

Ashley Dawson doubled and had three RBI for Belle Vernon (9-5, 12-6) and Kristi Baxendell drove in two runs. Ringgold had only two hits in the game.



• Every player in the starting lineup got a hit for Jefferson-Morgan in a 14-4, six-inning win over Mapletown in Section 2-A.

Brianna Yacknack and Julia Guthrie each had three RBI for Jefferson-Morgan (5-8, 6-9). Emily Cottle doubled twice and Sara Stepp and Yacknack each had a double. Heather Herbert tripled for the Rockets (5-8, 6-9).

Heather Shook hit a two-run home run for Mapletown.

• Geri Whitman struck out 20 batters and Tonya Carroll drove in the winning run in the ninth inning for Beth-Center in a 1-0 win over South Fayette.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Kalen Frazee singled and moved to second when an errant throw got past the first baseman. Ashley Niefert walked and Carroll drove in Frazee with a single.

Whitman has 234 strikeouts this season for Beth-Center (10-4, 12-5). Anessa Gounder struck out 10 but was the hard-luck loser for South Fayette.

• Rachel Burns allowed only one hit, a bouncer in the bottom of the seventh inning during West Greene's 9-0 victory over Frazier in a Section 1-A game.

Burns struck out nine and walked three for the Pioneers (11-2, 15-3). Angela Devenney drove in three runs and Chelsea Jones, Sam Milliken and Mary Burns each had a double. Mary Burns drove in four runs.

Scholastic baseball

Canon-McMillan scored 19 runs over the final three innings, including 10 in the seventh, to defeat Upper St. Clair 21-7 in Section 3-AAAA.

Canon-McMillan keeps its hold on the section lead with a 9-3 record. The Big Macs are 14-3 overall.

Matt Pierpont went 4-for-6 with a double, solo home run and six RBI for C-M. Phil Stabb doubled twice for Canon-McMillan. Mike Hull, Chris Dittmar, Charles Murphy and Aaron Weigel each had a double. Douglas hit a grand slam in the seventh inning and finished with 5 RBI. Dittmar and Stabb each collected three hits.

Mike Toward got the win in relief for Canon-McMillan. Pat Glass was the losing pitcher for Upper St. Clair (5-7, 10-7).

• Brownsville scored 15 runs in the first four innings and cruised to a 15-1, five-inning victory over Fort Cherry in Section 2-AA.

D.J. Lanzi homered twice, scored four runs and drove in five for Brownsville. Jeramy Kopacko homered for the Falcons.

Brian Ohler was the winning pitcher. Brent Liggett was the losing pitcher for Fort Cherry (0-12, 0-12). Josh Snatchko doubled in the loss.

• Mapletown got three hits after two outs in the bottom of the seventh and rallied to defeat Clay-Battelle (W.Va.) 9-8 in a non-section game.

Travis Corso doubled to begin the rally and scored when Jake Shiflett doubled him home. Cory Minnick finished the game with an RBI-single.

Corso and Shiflett finished with three hits each for Mapletown (6-10). Shiflett, Corso, Minnick and Ryan Wilson all doubled for the Maples.

Wilson was the winning pitcher. He struck out two.

• Drew Markovitch and Jeff Tarley each drove in three runs for Beth-Center in a 10-2 win over Waynesburg in Section 2-AA.

Tarley doubled twice for the Bulldogs (6-4, 7-6). Matt Bodnar also doubled and Markovitch homered for Beth-Center.

John Cherup was the winning pitcher. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Josh Snyder was the losing pitcher for Waynesburg (2-10, 2-12). Taylor Moore doubled.

• Ringgold scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to take a 7-5 victory from McGuffey in Section 4-AAA. Fred Garcia and Tom Brletich each had a double for the Rams. Matt Czulewicz doubled for the Highlanders.

• Zach Durbin smacked a grand slam and Ethan Virgili hit an inside-the-park home run in Carmichaels' 9-8 victory over California in a Section 1-A game.

Winning pitcher Chuck Gasti doubled for the Mikes (14-1, 16-0). Travis VanOlst also hit a grand slam in the fifth inning for Cal (4-7, 7-7-1).

• A four-run third inning powered Charleroi to a 5-2 victory over Washington in Section 2-AA. Mark Wise doubled for Wash High (8-4). The two teams are tied for first place in the section with 7-2 records. Charleroi is 9-3 overall.

Pony baseball

Pat Jennings drove in the game-winning run for Pliska's Auto Body in a 5-4 win over Chambers Insurance in a Washington Pony game.

Jack McIlvaine was the winning pitcher for Pliska's (3-2), which also got a double from Johnny Cox. Jacob Ferguson was the losing pitcher.

• Brandon Lesko hit a grand slam to power Albert's Meats to a 19-1 victory over Prosperity in a Washington Pony game.

Andrew Shymchyk, Josh Langley and Preston Semple each had a double for Albert's Meats. Tyler Bergman homered for Prosperity (0-5).

PSAC softball

East Stroudsburg hammered three California University pitchers for nine hits and nine runs in a 9-0 five-inning victory in the first round of the PSAC tournament.

Jamie Mingis went 3-for-3 and scored twice and Amanada Feist had a double, two RBI and scored twice for East Stroudsburg. Kristen Halverson allowed one hit over five innings and walked just one batter.

California will take on the loser of the Bloomsburg-Indiana game today.

WPIAL tennis

Peters Township's Doug Subostis and Andrew Nixon will play for the WPIAL Class AAA doubles championship today as the pair won three matches Thursday.

Subostis and Nixon, both seniors, defeated Penn-Trafford's Matt Hudak and John Colley 10-1 in the first round. In the quarterfinals, the Indians' duo defeated Matt Berus and Bryan Watt 10-8. They reached the finals by defeating Upper St. Clair's Shivom Sinha and Nick Navarre 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

Subostis and Nixon will play Shady Side Acadmemy's Chris Mengel and Josh Ferraccio, the top seed in the tournament, at 2:30 p.m. at North Allegheny.

College baseball

Three Marietta pitchers combined to hold Washington & Jefferson hitless over the final seven innings as the Pioneers recorded a 10-1 baseball victory at Don Schaly Stadium.

T.J. Knowlton, Chris Stewart, Jason Baumler and Justin Merryman combined to hold W&J to two hits. Senior leftfielder Ryan Gregg and sophomore catcher Mark Thomchickhad the W&J hits.

W&J coach honored

Washington & Jefferson head wrestling coach Jay Robison was inducted into the Edinboro University Athletic Hall of Fame this past weekend.

Robison, the 2008 Presidents' Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, was one of 10 members inducted into the 27th Hall of Fame class at Edinboro.

Robison reached the Division I national championship bout, and remains Edinboro's career leader in wins (145-23). A native of Allison Park, he is one of only six Fighting Scots wrestlers to earn All-American honors at least three times, finishing as an All-American in 1995, 1997 and 1998. He was a four-time national qualifier while competing at 190 lbs.

During his senior season, he capped his brilliant career with a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships, suffering his lone loss of the season in the championship match, 6-4 in overtime, to finish 45-1. The 45 wins are a school record.
